The latest outbreak has been linked to a driver for international flight crews who contracted the Delta variant of the virus, which was first identified in India.

Countries who impose strict quarantine still face risks through different channels, and once more, international crews who do not have the same rules (though I suppose xrews test regularly) are at the origin. Then the population is condemned to stay home .

Yup, this is what happens when you have a two-tier policy that subjects the proles to extremely strict entry/exit rules but the elites (sports stars, politicians, embassy staff, billionaires and their entourages, etc.) are allowed to come and go almost as easily as everyone could back in 2019.

In short, the future is now. Enjoy.

On repeat by now: This never ends, virus is endemic globally, variants will continue to evolve, as soon as travel opens up even "successful" countries will be hit by additional infections. The virus is not a big killer, but the response to it in certain countries and states is gradually wearing down economies and people and trust in institutions.

The virus excuse has morphed into an open-ended introduction of ever more authoritarian control, CCP-style. It is both surprising and sad that both Australia and Canada are leading in this.

well that's what happens when few people are exposed........the cycle of lockdown-cluster rise-lockdown.....will continue to perpetuate. Not saying it should just be a free for all, many deaths will happen before a kind of equilibrium is reached, but some sensible precautions, protection of the vulnerable and a quick and robust vaccination program will limit the damage. Unfortunately all scenarios will result in people losing loved ones and that is of course horrible for those families involved but short of everyone cutting around in fully sealed NBC suits, it's the reality of the situation.

Imagine being banned from leaving your city? Some dark governments out there. Be happy you live in Japan.

Roughly 6.7 million doses have been administered to date in a population of 25 million, with only a small fraction of those having received both jabs.

Japan has quadrupled that dosage rollout in only 1 month!

WHY wouldnt you be able to stay in a huge city like Sydney, where there is absolutely everything you require to survive or even entertain? You'll survive without golfing or camping for 2 weeks, dont worry.

Japan is not vaccinating its elderly as a priority.

Instead, it is offering the vaccine to younger residents.

That is not the way to do it....

Just highlights the different approachs to the virus even just in Australia. No full lockdown, stay at home, 5 km limits , businesses shut down etc like Melbourne. Quite a tame response in fact although looking at it compared to Tokyo it seems extreme( but they don’t have an Olympics) In fact quite major differences to Melbourne which rivals North Korea and China for the most authoritarian reactions in the world

a string of flare-ups that highlight Australia's difficulty in extinguishing outbreaks.

Media exaggerated garbage! Both Melbourne and Sydney have been virus free for more than three months prior to this latest cluster.

Also, the population of Sydney is over 6 million and the population of Australia is well over 26 million. People should not pay any attention to an article with many basic untruths. This article is nothing more than sensationalized tabloid trash!

"Instead, it is offering the vaccine to younger residents.

Very few "elderlies" (well except many JT residents) go out on drinking sprees.

Very few elderlies engage in bodily slam fests, regardless of gender (see exceptions above).

Youngsters do all those. And more.

Then return home to contaminate the old.

Vaccinating young people first is the proper way to do it.

Japan turning the tables on "experts".

As they always do in the end.

In the absence of either a cure or a vaccine, lockdowns are necessary to save lives. What nags me is that vaccines would be widely available in Australia, if they made an effort to acquire and distribute them. Australia could make their own vaccines under license, the way Thailand is doing, if they wanted to. So what are they waiting for?

Be happy you live in Japan.

I am. But there are some foreigners in town who go on and on (online) about masking up, staying socially distanced or basically staying home. Absolute boors. I have to pretend to like them. Well, I don't, but one couple is popular so I pretend so as not to avoid public furor.

@1glenn

We do, the Astrazeneca vaccine is made here under licence.

The rollout is continuing, there was less urgency in the beginning due to our lower numbers of cases compared to other countries.

@letsberealistic

Just to let you know, alert level 2 in New Zealand is not a classic ‘lockdown’. It’s more about taking extra precautionary measures, in case of a spread.

“At Alert Level 2, you can go to work and school, but you should follow public health measures and consider others around you.” - https://covid19.govt.nz/alert-levels-and-updates/alert-level-2/

25m is a relatively small population compared to many developed nations. Get yourselves vaccinated asap.

Australia could make their own vaccines under license, the way Thailand is doing, if they wanted to. So what are they waiting for?

Australia has been making Astra Zeneca in Victoria since May at one million doses a week.

"The first 300,000 doses of the Oxford/AstraZeneca vaccine arrived in Australia on 28 February 2021. 50 million doses will be manufactured in Australia by multinational biopharmaceutical company CSL, in partnership with the developer, international pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca. Distribution of these Australian-made CSL doses has commenced and will continue on an ongoing basis."
