Well - Sydney may have the best fireworks, but New Year's eve actually starts in Auckland New Zealand about 2 hours earlier. In fact, if you want to be really fussy, the Chattham Islands are the first place to celebrate it.

Auckland's sky was lit up last night with half a tonne of fireworks, blasted from the Sky Tower to mark the New Year. I compared with the Tokyo Tower on the BBC World News.

Sydney had an early fireworks festival in the early evening, at about 7 p.m., I think, before the main one at midnight.
