It's a shame that Assad started this whole mess by firing on peaceful protesters with Russian weapons and support. From the chaos, ISIS saw an opportunity to spread. Now Assad is begging for US support as Russia is obviously ineffective.

Really? I did not read 'The Onion' this morning.

ISIS is exploiting another goof-up by the logically challenged cowboys who go in all gun blazing into fights they have no clue about.

Good grief, where did you get that from? The Sunni jihadi fight against the secular Assad regime goes way back, it is decades old. Read up on the history of Syria. What is new is that Western governments and their so-called "allies" actually support the jihadis. THAT has allowed ISIS to grow.

My heart goes out the Syrian Kurds, who will now be squeezed between ISIS and ISIS-supporting Turkey. In a sane world, Western leaders would put pressure on Erdogan to stop this criminal behaviour. Instead, we are praising this fanatic as a NATO member.

Is 1964 early enough for you? There is no ideological difference between the Hama rioters from 1964 and ISIS today. They are radical Sunni jihadis, with the same goal of establishing their god-state.

The only difference is that the West is suffering from collective amnesia now. Good grief.

You were in denial of Assad starting the civil war by firing on unarmed protesters. And you would be wrong, as usual.

And how come the US has no problem with the fact that its ally, and a member of NATO, is backing ISIS?

It's pretty screwed up. NATO needs to re-shuffle the deck & discard the jokers. NATO must flex muscle at both russia and IS-

You are in denial that the "civil war" in Syria between the islamists and the secular Baath party has been going on for decades. The claim that the conflict in Syria mysteriously started with one random event in 2010 is simply ignorant (although in line with widespread media misinformation)

It is correct though that Western governments with their ill-advised support of the Sharia winter aka "Arab Spring" across the Arab world gave a huge boost to the islamists. We have seen the admirable results in Libya and Tunesia. Do you wish to see the Al Quaeda flag fluttering over Damascus too?

When you send in people to kill peaceful protesters, it creates chaos. From that chaos the radical elements find an opening. It's been seen again and again and again.
