ROFL, says the supporters of a person who didn’t know where Taiwan was located.

It does not matter what you think about Trump. The current Potus is Biden, and his bumbling and the pro CCP stance of his handlers are evident. This "whataboutism" is getting old.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

What bumbling Biden mumbles is irrelevant. What his handlers say counts, and they walked back on his empty promise very quickly.

ROFL, says the supporters of a person who didn’t know where Taiwan was located. Unlike the former guy who was busy appeasing China , all for helping Ivanka do business there, this President knows how to take a position on issues.

I approve of what Biden said, it’s just a pity his own administration promptly cut the ground from under his feet.

We cant really compare hongkong to Taiwan because there's an agreement that hongkong be an autonomous region within China same as Macau.

Taiwan is an independent breakaway province after a civil war without an autonomous agreement with mainland China.

Although Taiwanese are more polite and less dominant than mainland Chinese Taiwanese are still Chinese and a little pushy and selfish.

Nonetheless ive really enjoyed numerous visits to Taiwan but not enjoyed my visits to China.

The USA should re-establish diplomatic relations with the democratic and like-minded ally ROC -TW asap.

As much as I admire Taiwan and as much as I want the US to go to the mat to protect her from PRC aggression, a declaration of independence would be foolish. China would immediately go to war with no consideration of the possible consequences. Perhaps it just my optimistic nature and perhaps it is because I have served in the US Navy but I think US and Taiwanese forces would ultimately prevail. Staging an amphibious frontal assault against a well prepared, dug in enemy with modern missiles is a suicide mission. Even the US Marines no longer plan on staging WWII style big amphibious operations. When your landing force can engaged hundreds of kilometers out to sea by your enemies anti ship cruise missiles and when they can throw literally thousands of mines into the water ahead of the assault using aircraft, and grid a landing beach and the ocean approaches with hundreds of ballistic rockets and missiles (MLRS, ATACMS, and their upcoming replacements) a WWII style amphibious assault is not pre-ordained to succeed. If you kill enough of your enemies forces at sea they may not have enough forces left to carry out a successful assault.

But why risk the destruction and loss of life such a "victory" would produce? Better to maintain the status quo. The CCP is a dead man walking. Baby Ping Ping may well be the last CCP General Secretary if he decides to stay on indefinitely. China is at its peak right now. All the trends, from demographics to economic growth, are trending downward. Knocking down the tech titans and telling private industry in China to look to those bastions of innovation the State Owned Industries for leadership combined with telling the owner of Evergrand to pay the corporations bills out of his own pocket means the end of risk taking entrepreneurship in China. He has kill the goose and broken the golden egg beyond repair. I would wager that if Taiwan and her allies are smart and patient with just enough might to deter the Chinese and not poking the dragon too hard too often, we will probably see the democratic government of Taiwan outlast the CCP. I would bet more than beers on that outcome.

The whole UN members except the authoritarian PROC will surely follow America’s move and strengthen the freedom loving da-kine Island Republic.

Failin to do so would make Washingjing’s current steps a mere charade just to make silent partner Beijington happy and gay.

I travelled to Taiwan numerously over the past 4 decades. It was not democracy ruled.

I suspect you didn’t travel to Taiwan. The CCP may have sent you to a place called Taiwan in mainland China!

China has denied it carried out a hypersonic missile test, saying it actually tested a reusable spacecraft. I don't believe it though. False humility.

ROFL, humility is something China isn’t known for.

Probably a failure.

And I admire your loyalty to China despite being a student of Chinese language in Japan!!!

I hope Taiwan has the will & means to drive any foreign invader back into the sea. An air assault as well in the form of a blitzkrieg should also be expected.

The sheer numbers and geography make that idea wishful thinking. Taiwan will need outside assistance. Alas, with the current globalist government in the US, that will not be forthcoming. And I doubt that Japans government has the backbone to step in.

So, the situation looks bleak for Taiwan.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

No, it’s more like Don Corleone. If he continues that means he has not gotten his people in place. If he is strong enough then he can step down and pull strings from behind.

So Xi is a mob boss??? You may have a point there, China does work life a Mafia, total loyalty or death!

They may not wake up with a severed horse's head in their beds but some have disappeared.

Taiwanese are quite friendly

That has been my experience too. Also much more polite than mainland Chinese.

A population of 1.4 billion has all kinds.

They are very well aware that as soon as say Taiwan or Hong Kong was able to successfully assert independence all those other regions that hate the Han Chinese would do likewise

Looking at their dynasties though, the trend is to split and reunify. It won't turn to into Europe with many states because of their language and culture bind them together.

Could someone explain what is China's pre-occupation with Taiwan? Taiwan has never been part of Communist China, the increase in land mass would be negligible, they have no natural resources

I would add in addition to splitism, that the relationship has been described as that between a parent and a wayward teenager and it's why China would not invade Taiwan. They're supposed to stare at each other then break down and cry after the prodigal son returns to the mainland father.

Everybody seems to have their hair on fire about hypersonic weapons.

It's the Pentagon with their panties in a knot with the senior chief resigning and conceding China has already won the AI battle.

Or it probably failed, so they aren’t too keen to publicize it.

China has denied it carried out a hypersonic missile test, saying it actually tested a reusable spacecraft. I don't believe it though. False humility.

Again, the interventionism of the US disguised as “democracy and good will” as a pretext to try to stop the great and unstoppable economic advance of China.

I think you are quite misguided as the US continues to allow business investment in China thus aiding China's continued economic development. Your anti US tirade should be tossed out as without the US, China is nothing.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

There's only a handful of troops there in Taiwan and China knows it.

The Chinese only have to kill a few Americans to force the US to respond. Imagine the public outcry for revenge.

Taiwanese are quite friendly

That has been my experience too. Also much more polite than mainland Chinese.

Tomahawk and Cruise Missile have range, warheads capability up to nuclear and are cheap and plentiful.

Salvo size matters and a comparatively less expensive subsonic cruise missile can be procured, and expended in far larger numbers that the exquisitely expensive hypersonic missiles. Tomahawks fly so low and navigate so precisely around terrain and buildings they can be as difficult to engage and shoot down as the hypersonic screamers.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Could someone explain what is China's pre-occupation with Taiwan?

The Communists are absolutely fixated on what they call "splittists" and "splittism". China has a history of breaking up into competing regions then being reunified under a harsh conqueror, only to break up again when that strong dynasty weakens and atrophies. There are strong centripetal forces in China among some minority populations such as the Tibetans, Uyghurs, Inner Mongolians and, yes, the Taiwanese. The Communists are exquisitely sensitive to anything that even hints at the ability of anything China lays claim to splitting off from Han Chinese control. That is why the CCP flipped out and reacted so harshly when people in Hong Kong started to say "Hong Kong is not China". The CCP views "splittism" as an existential threat to their rule to be stopped by any and all means regardless of the cost. They are very well aware that as soon as say Taiwan or Hong Kong was able to successfully assert independence all those other regions that hate the Han Chinese would do likewise, and probably a few of the far flung regions populated by the Han who are, shall we say, not impressed by the leadership coming from Beijing. It would not be the first time in China's long history.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Its hypersonic missiles though. Does that make any difference?

The Space Shuttle re-entered the Earth's atmosphere at higher speeds than those HGVs do. So does the X-37 the Chair Force flies for missions lasting over a year and recovers to a runway at Edwards AFB.

https://www.boeing.com/defense/autonomous-systems/x37b/index.page

The Chair Force doesn't say what this thing does when it is up there for over a year at a time but whatever it is it must be interesting.

Could someone explain what is China's pre-occupation with Taiwan? Taiwan has never been part of Communist China, the increase in land mass would be negligible, they have no natural resources that China does not already have, they are not a threat or a competitor and it would cause China a ton of problems if China were to take Taiwan by force. The one thing Taiwan does have is the people and the technological workforce that would be ruined if an invasion were to occur. So why is China so focused on Taiwan?

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Even when the Yield is dialed up to the megaton range, a CEP of 32 KM is too big to destroy a hardened target.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Everybody seems to have their hair on fire about hypersonic weapons. They are not the be all and end all of delivery system. Hypersonic weapons are extremely impressive technology but it is still in its infancy. So far China and Russia do have missiles that travel at hypersonic speeds but their accuracy and warhead capability in very limited. Tomahawk and Cruise Missile have range, warheads capability up to nuclear and are cheap and plentiful.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

China did not come up with this technology nor was it the first tested but it is the only nation that has hit 40,000 kilometers and almost hit their target.

There’s very little that is created in China, most is copied or stolen.

They are saying it’s not a missile which makes me think they’re trying to downplay the feat rather than mad dogging it.

Or it probably failed, so they aren’t too keen to publicize it.

Don’t think so, and spies are not as competent as we are lead to believe. But anyhow one can pretend to be anyone here, no law against it.

The US President has full authority on US foreign policy. The White House press Secretary has absolutely zero authority on US foreign policy.

So it’s unconstitutional or incompetence. Which is it?

It’s called diplomacy!! Unfortunately that’s something China knows little about, hence it’s continued isolation from the global community!!!

Taiwan needs to increase it's military budget. The challenges ahead are serious and real. USA and Japan can help, but Taiwan needs to play its part as well. In a Blitzkrieg type of attack the CCP will win in 10 days or less. Not Enough time for a significant help from friends and Allies.

NASA sent space shuttles to orbit the Earth for a week or more then hit the numbers on a runway in Florida, and has done it repeatedly. NASA has sent manned spacecraft to the Moon and back, nailing a landing in the Pacific Ocean right next to a waiting aircraft carrier.

Its hypersonic missiles though. Does that make any difference?

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

I remember during the Vietnam conflict, Taiwan supported the US by allowing our military to use their bases

to refuel and support aircraft from Guam headed to Vietnam. Taiwan also helped support and replenish our naval ships and personnel. I call on all U.S. veterans who served on Taiwan to return there and show your support by volunteering your time and valuable experience to support the people of this democratic republic who are bravely standing up to the military threats from China

China managed to hit 40,000 Kilometers on a full circle and re-enter back into earth and miss its target by a mere 20 Miles

What is effectively a 32,000 meter CEP is nothing to brag about.

China everything they have produced is a copy or stolen ideas from every country you can name. I know what it takes to design build test and manufacture these sophisticated weapons. I do it every day lets see what these clones they build do in a real theater. Lets see these copied drones and aircraft pull "Gs" in a real dog fight, I am willing to bet you see rivets popping everywhere.

China did not come up with this technology nor was it the first tested but it is the only nation that has hit 40,000 kilometers and almost hit their target.

On the outside it looks good, it looks threatening. China is nothing but a BIG pit bull with a large mouth and a loud bark with no TEETH!!!

They are saying it’s not a missile which makes me think they’re trying to downplay the feat rather than mad dogging it.

Speaking of MAD - mutually assured destruction - means that the real power is not the actual weapon but the nation’s ability to make and develop the technology. This is a psychological foundation for the power shift from the West to Asia. Since there is no defense for this technology, Gen. Miley might have realized he is in charge of a huge military that is obsolete and there is no quick way to fix it.

The only ace that the West was holding was the bloated U.S. military and now that card becomes a joker and, like Afghanistan, an expensive joke.

This is a reality check for the West and an awakening for all of Asia.

"Next time we shouldn't miss..."

Strap an iPhone onto the warheads(s), get a lightning cable and connect to the guidance system, type in the address on Maps, click "Directions" and hit "Go."

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Unless the missile gets really darned lucky and the right target is right in front of it when it's seeker starts detecting things, it will likely not find a legitimate target to hit.

I believe the concern is nuclear carrying capabilities. China openly acknowledged that they had missed the target even though it was 32 kilometers.

When the media told China that a nuclear missile could be as effective even if it missed by 32 kilometers - the Chinese spokesmen said we had a target and missed. Next time we shouldn’t miss.

I am seeing a China more and more confident: Sinovac is only 50.4% effective. We missed the target by 32 Kms. We are facing a power crisis.

What is your read on this? This is more “crouching tiger” than blowing hot air.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

If a bomber flying at low altitude can launch a dozen or two air breathing hypersonic missiles that have ranges of 1000 km or more at lower altitudes you can give your enemy a real tough day. Those are going to be a real difficult problem to detect and shoot down, much harder than HGVs are.

China managed to hit 40,000 Kilometers on a full circle and re-enter back into earth and miss its target by a mere 20 Miles

So far no nation has managed such a feat. US managed to hit 8000 Miles and Russia managed to hit 9400 Miles but both failed when they tried 15000 Miles after which the project was abandoned by US and Russia for separate reasons.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

The real Holy Grail of hypersonics are air breathing scramjet powered hypersonic vehicles that can fly low in the atmosphere. Weapons so powered could be launched from the wing of an airplane below an enemies radar horizon rather than being lofted high into the upper atmosphere or even the edge of outer space as HGVs must be, making them easy to detect when launched. If a bomber flying at low altitude can launch a dozen or two air breathing hypersonic missiles that have ranges of 1000 km or more at lower altitudes you can give your enemy a real tough day. Those are going to be a real difficult problem to detect and shoot down, much harder than HGVs are.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

This is so 1990's. The Pentagon's hypersonic weapon programs suffered a setback last week when a booster rocket carrying a hypersonic weapon failed, people briefed on the test result said.

A maneuverable weapon hurtling toward a target at hypersonic speeds I'd imagine would be difficult for existing U.S. defenses to shoot-down. Those who know please inform.

There is a lot of hype surrounding hypersonic weapons. The warhead of every ICBM and almost every IRBM re-enters the atmosphere at hypersonic speed. MANeuverable Re-entry Vehicles or MARVs were around in the 1980s, example Pershing II. It wasn't a glide vehicle per-se, but used fins and a radar seeker to refine its aimpoint on the way down to its target. A reduced CEP meant you could take out your target with a smaller nuclear warhead, limiting collateral damage while still having a high probability of destroying what you sought to destroy . What has changed is that now the re-entry vehicles are more like lifting bodies that have some ability to glide and maneuver. They are still unpowered and rely on ballistic missiles to get up into the atmosphere and reach hypersonic speeds before they are released high in the atmosphere. Something like SM-3 Block II is going to engage the rocket booster probably long before it can release the hypersonic glide vehicle.

Here is something to ponder. While these HGVs might be good at attacking fixed targets on land, they are moving so fast that finding a moving target on land or at sea, is just exceptionally hard for them to do. The reason is they are moving so fast that they won't have enough time to conduct a scan, sort through the many merchant ships, fishing boats, other nations coast guard patrol ships and the like to find the enemy warship they want to sink, lock on to it and maneuver to hit it. Unless the missile gets really darned lucky and the right target is right in front of it when it's seeker starts detecting things, it will likely not find a legitimate target to hit. Same thing trying to hit, say, a truck mounted radar that is on the move.

The US has more than one HGV program. The USAF program is having problems with the booster rocket, but the US Army and Navy have a different HGV and rockets and their program has been highly successful. The Army is already training with the launchers and the system will be deployed in 2023.

On the other hand though, the mere presence of those troops might be seen as a huge provocation by them, which I'm not sure how it will play out.

Should mess with the CCP fairly well. They are also there without the permission or knowledge of the CCP, further emphasizing that Taiwan is its own country. Too small a group to be considered a troop support but enough to deter attacks as well for the noted political cover you mentioned.

It's great, any day CCP runs in circles is a good day

Didn't realize the town halls were hurting the Chinese so much, probably something to do with Biden's strong support to Taiwan in the last one. Time for more town halls I say!!!

It was reported by Fox News and so I think Fox News played a bit of a role in the tone of the language or translation to put down Biden. I clicked on it for the "China" part.

Translation from what? Does Fox have a Chinese language site?

I’ve never heard a Japanese or Chinese ever call someone “a degenerate.” It’s not even a translation issue but killing two birds with one stone: using insults to put down the President of the US and to stir up Americans against China.

No, China lost in the Nisshin war with Japan and the latter got Taiwan.

Guam, the Philippines, and Puerto Rico became territories of the US as part of the terms of the Treaty of Paris that officially ended the Spanish-American War of 1898.

Taiwan/ Formosa was never a part of China.

It was internationally recognized as a part of Japan by all major powers, including China

after the Shimonoseki peace treaty in 1895.

Sun yats-en congratulated Taiwan on the day the treaty was signed.

There was a large minority of Chinese immigrants, just like in other Asian nations, but the

Taiwanese spoke several different languages but never Chinese.

The japanese investment, development and modernization of Taiwan was far greater than

anywhere else in Asia.

it is, but he cant and wont. We were hopeful with his statement about Taiwan in the CNN Town Hall.

Wonderful that you watched the Town Hall, that's what democracy is about!

But it was just another case of Biden mistakenly saying the opposite of what he was supposed to say.

Not at all dear sir, he said exactly what they will do.

Now that's a man who isn't afraid to speak his mind, don't you agree?

Good new that the US is giving more military assistance to Taiwan. It should give even more help.

How about swapping the military assistance and money it currently gives to Israel, to Taiwan instead.

Move it's patriot missile systems to Taiwan as well. Israel needs no help as it has nukes of its own.

Set up a few port visits for warships and joint exercises in the Taiwan strait.

What’s your take on Kishida, Aso, Biden and Harris on this score?

My take is that if they are willing to defend a great, democratic, friendly and peaceful nation - Taiwan - then they must be supported

A bit noncommittal.

You used to tell us how ‘Abe-san’ and ‘Aso-sensei’ along with Trump and Pence would sort those Commies out.

It sounds as if you are less convinced with these current leaders.

Do you think ‘Aso-sensei’ may be the man to take the lead here?

Firstly, it is crucial that the Biden admin makes moves ASAP to diplomatically recognize Taiwan.

What’s your take on Kishida, Aso, Biden and Harris on this score?

My take is that if they are willing to defend a great, democratic, friendly and peaceful nation - Taiwan - then they must be supported. If they/we were to tolerate China invading Taiwan - who will be next?

Firstly, it is crucial that the Biden admin makes moves ASAP to diplomatically recognize Taiwan. Japan will then follow suit.

CNN is pretty much US state television so this seems a pretty big dea

ROFL it is not, even though the CCP might try to make you believe that.

Is there any channel in China that can criticize the government?

The bases are still there. Fill them up with grunts, ammo, nukes, and harware.

Make no mistake, China : the USA, and the free world, have Taiwan's back. Dont even think about it.

I hope you’re right, sport, but you did say that about Hong Kong.

I think you described Abe, Aso, Trump and Pence as ‘the envy’ of the free world who would put China firmly in its place.

What’s your take on Kishida, Aso, Biden and Harris on this score?

The Chinese state media has described the Biden administration and the current US government as the most incapable and degenerate in the country's history.

When a 'degenerate' calls you a degenerate I take that as a compliment.

They should stop broadcasting these CNN Presidential Townhalls.

Didn't realize the town halls were hurting the Chinese so much, probably something to do with Biden's strong support to Taiwan in the last one. Time for more town halls I say!!!

Which in real, non-Commie propaganda terms, means the US is doing something right here. China is rattled.

Biden last week told a televised forum that the United States was ready to defend Taiwan from any Chinese invasion. The White House quickly walked back those comments amid warnings from Beijing, continuing a strategy of ambiguity on whether it would intervene militarily if China attacked.

It is embarrassing when you speak and your own government negates what you say.

This actually alters the equation quite a bit.

The presence of even just a few US troops wouldn't be enough to make a difference in the military situation, but it has huge political implications.

If China invades, they now run the risk of killing American servicemen while doing so. This would give any US president ample political cover for military intervention against China if they wanted it.

Knowing this might make China significantly less likely to attack than they would be if those troops weren't there. On the other hand though, the mere presence of those troops might be seen as a huge provocation by them, which I'm not sure how it will play out.

When I lived in Taiwan in 2008, I found it backwards, insular, and the people not so friendly. As for democracy, god only knows the way this word is abused/misused.

Not sure which Taiwan you lived in, but the one we know is forward looking, organized and the people are very polite and friendly. And it is a democracy.

Though the CCP might teach a different definition of democracy!!!

Excellent news. Well done to the USA on providing these advisors. Hopefully the US military build-up in Taiwan will continue. Get the Taiwanese military up to US standard, and in the meantime supplement them with more US Forces.

Make no mistake, China : the USA, and the free world, have Taiwan's back. Dont even think about it.

But Tsai's comments are the first time a Taiwanese leader has publicly made such an admission since the last US garrison left in 1979 when Washington switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing.

The 1979 withdrawal was a mistake and the US along with other democracies should ensure Taiwan is protected and correct the mistake!
