China is indicating it will maintain pressure on Taiwan following its large-scale military drills, a sign that tensions over the democracy’s status will linger.

Don't get me wrong, I would much prefer peaceful relations with Russia and China. However, if Putin and Xi have their minds made up to go to war, what can we do about it? What should we do about it? History shows us that caving into dictators does not bring peace.

It looks to me like Xi wants his legacy to be the expansion of China. That includes not only taking Hong Kong and Formosa, but expanding China's dominance into the surrounding international waters. Looking at what is going on in the Big Picture, I think Xi will try to achieve his dream before he dies, which means war with Formosa and the West before he dies. It is not a pleasant reality, but ignoring it will not make it magically go away.
It is very possible that Xi is planning for an imminent invasion of Formosa.

Chinese labor is actually getting more expensive. Mexican manufacturing is actually more productive and cheaper hence why the US is trying to move a lot of manufacturing there
TaiwanIsNotChina
Taiwan has an older government than the criminal PRC. It was the PRC that declared itself independent from Taiwan. Don't need any more justification than that for Taiwan to acquire arms legally.
It does no such thing. 1.) it says nothing about Crimea 2.) there was supposed to be a ceasefire, removal of foreign troops, and the ability of Ukraine to hold elections in Donbass under its laws and not the separatists. None of that happened. Even if Ukraine was in violation of UNSC 2202, there was no followup resolution granting Russia the right to try to eliminate the Kiev government, recognize new republics, or even worse flat-out steal territory,

Tantrum like a 2 yr old child that needs a nap.
For a society that claims a 5000 yr history, the CCP does a terrible job of retaining historical buildings, sights, and true culture of all the people. They bulldoze it, then rebuild "standard" concrete versions with car-parks and shuttle buses for tourism.
That isn't really true in the short term and it isn't best for the long term from the US perspective. There are a few medicines that are so cheap to manufacture that only China does it now. The other manufacturers in the world charge over 3x more. For a chronic condition, that matters. Would you rather spend $500/month or $1500/month?
People in the region need China as a trading partner, especially Taiwan. Last year, the mainland decided to have another tantrum and blocked some Taiwanese foods from entering the mainland. like pineapples. https://www.bbc.com/news/business-56353963 The authoritarian govt pushed that Taiwanese fruit was bad - they have to blame others for their own issues - and Taiwan's farmers were badly hurt.

It is free to dream. Imagine Tsai eventually becomes the first president of United Province of China, ruling both mainland and Taiwan
Rodney
True, China Taiwan trade is very important to both.

I think buying high tech weapons and pointing at Mainland China and stationing American troops on a member of One China agreement without consulting the general population seems pretty irresponsible to me. She should study what happened to the rubble mound of Ukraine and the plight of her citizens.
Fredrik
Well, those drills were for the best of the national interest of U.S. But what's the point with China's drills? They have nothing to gain from warmongering.

Tsai Ing-wen. What a brave respectful leader. She should have been born as Japanese-Japanese and have reached to the TOP of Oyaji LDP long time ago.

Is anyone here familiar with the depths of Taiwanese government corruption, i.e. sending hitmen to the US to murder a journalist who published an expose?
I googled that. Yes, Taiwan admitted it's role in that murder - but it happened in the 1980s, before Taiwan was a democracy. So it doesn't count. Back then it was a not the shining democracy that it is today.

As with the leaked classified State Department documents that has the Pentagon red in the face, there is so much more to this that people apparently aren't very aware of.

Why would they want to hurt themselves after the failed sanctions with Russia?
but they can't stomach the repercussions. The solution is one where you hurt China but not yourselves. So far there has been none.

"Taiwan president slams 'irresponsible' China military drills"
As does Respected Comrade Kim regarding the incessant ganging up of the local bullies and having war parties complete with invasion practice right off his coast, also called 'drills'. China is actually quite late to the party but might arrive with some surprises for the U.S. whose overall naval thinking seems not to have left WWII and whose foreign policy thinking is identical to ancient Rome, take. And Madame President Tsai might want to take a look north before she commits an hypocrisy of this sort.

China needs to be economically sanctioned for them to understand that belligerence is not worth it. And no, we don't "need" China for anything. China can play with Russia and themselves.
Peter14
China is the sole cause of tension and hostility in the region. Time to sanction China for its belligerent actions.
