So why did the US remove their military bases in Taiwan? Imagine today if they kept them there along with their nuclear capabilities.

I have the most respect for the US because they valued their soldiers lives. It is unfortuante that they do not value all lives but the US made a lot of geopolitical sacrifices for their soldiers' lives in Vietnam.

As the U.S. Army lost ground in Vietnam, 400,000 American soldiers were trapped in the muddy Vietnamese rainforest, dripping wet, cold and hungry, and death awaited them.

The tropical rainforest terrain of Vietnam is different from the desert terrain of Iraq. Vietnam is also unlike the temperate terrain of North Korea, which is all bare mountainous terrain.

The Vietnamese rainforest may be easy to get into, but not so easy to get out. With the dense jungle, the aircraft can hardly see the ground if at all. The air advantage is limited. Those of you who were there, please share.

The United States needed China's support to end the war. Nixon took the initiative to visit PRC, a country that does not even have diplomatic relations with the United States in 1972.

Mao proposed that U.S. troops must be withdrawn from Indochina and Taiwan at the same time, otherwise the 400,000 American soldiers could not be decently withdrawn from the Vietnamese rainforest. Nixon was forced to agree that there would be no foreign troops in Taiwan from then on. How did Mao pull that one off?

The U.S. withdraws troops from Taiwan in exchange for 400,000 American soldiers' lives. They are second guessing their decisions with the Shanhai Communique now but they chose to save lives.

China should not think there is room for compromise in the commitment of Taiwan's people to democracy and freedom

Stay free Taiwan! Taiwan has done a wonderful job rebuilding itself in its own fashion. My family are ready for another trip there. As much as I'd like to re-visit Hong Kong and the mainland (the mainland is filled with dozens of incredible sites), I cannot in good conscience leave any of our money in either place knowing some of it, any of it, for that matter, might later be taken by the CCP regime.

I just tweeted Elon "Elon" Musk on this matter - don't fear, he'll resolve this.

Taiwan is not China's business. Taiwan is Taiwan's business. When the dictatorship known as the CCP decides to surrender to the will of the people and make China a democracy, a democracy that may decide that the Communist Party has no more role in China... and might be taken to task for its autocratic rule of China, then can reasonable minds discuss if Taiwan wants to be involved in the governance of China or remain a separate, sovereign nation.

Tsai, in her national day speech outside the presidential office, said it was "regrettable" that China had escalated its intimidation and threatened peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait and region.

A simple statement of China's increasing military intimidation against Taiwan.

Only by respecting the commitment of the Taiwanese people to our sovereignty, democracy, and freedom can there be a foundation for resuming constructive interaction across the Taiwan Strait."

In other words China should develop its relationship with Taiwan as it is, Democratic, free and Sovereign. They will not surrender their independence and freedom to the CCP, no matter how much they intimidate, declare or claim ownership of free Taiwan.

So why did the US remove their military bases in Taiwan?

Cripes, it was in 1979!

There are two countries who happen to speak versions of Chinese among others, one is an overbearing oppressive dictatorship, the other is a free, peaceful and democratic land whose people have no desire to be forcibly subjugated by the former.

China needs to stop creating tension and disturbing the peace as a distraction to its own increasing problems and failure.

A dire situation, antagonised further by Pelosi's ignorance.

China is about to become the worlds number one economy. Taiwan should join and become number one too.

Wrong on both.

Of course there will never be a confrontation, that is the wish of western pirates who live off terror and international chaos.

The unification of mainland China with its island province of Taiwan is inevitable, whether you like it or not.

China is about to become the worlds number one economy. Taiwan should join and become number one too.

Excellent !!.. It is the plain truth that makes many freedom-loving idealistic naives uncomfortable..

Wrong on both.

I think your naive passion ends up clouding your geopolitical knowledge...

Lol...

Only when China becomes a democracy first, then --and only then-- Taiwan will consider it, LOL

And give up their freedom?

How much are ya willing to sell to give up your freedom?

If the Japanese government asks you to sell your freedom for a fee, how much are ya willing to accept?

Yeah, I didn't think so, LOL

Monetary gain is nothing if ya don't have the freedom how to spend it to live the way ya like

Ya guys are naive if ya think Taiwanese are going to give up their freedom just to be #1 economy - they don't care about that, LOL

Taiwan is rich enough and they have freedom - they don't need to be #1 but lose their freedom

TokyoLiving, West Taiwan has nothing that the people of Taiwan want. As a country West Taiwan may have a larger economy but the individual wealth/income/lifestyle of the Taiwanese is incomparably better, that is before you factor in the freedoms and personal liberty that they enjoy as against the oppressive dictatorship those across the water have to endure.

It is very easy to cynically disregard the rights and freedom of others to gratify your own political viewpoint when you live in a safe country like Japan and do not have to live in fear of arbitrary arrest for voicing your opinions.
