The majority of Taiwanese today identify themselves as Taiwanese because only 16.8% of the population are over 65 years old and have any memory of being connected to China.

Most were born and grew up in a society free from the CCP's authoritarian control and want to keep it that way.

With the threatening China going overboard lately Taiwan needs all the help it can get, openly thanking the country that obviously is doing the most to support their independence is also an appeal for other countries to do the same.

China wants Taiwan's chip manufacturing. They've tried to get it by every method, except invasion and failed to reproduce it.

The US wants access to Taiwan's extremely competitive chip companies and is willing to ensure they are paid - along with SK and US chip makers. We know from other global goods and access that the US won't shut off access for almost any trivial thing. OTOH, the world has seen what China does over unimportant things like calling Taiwan a country. Petty little boy pouting, like they need a nap after a tantrum. About the worst thing the US did was cut off access to ARM CPUs, but only after China violated agreements to leave democracy alone in Hong Kong.

https://www.extremetech.com/computing/326447-arm-china-seizes-ip-relaunches-as-an-independent-company is what China did. China doesn't play by the rules that the rest of the world uses. They've gotten away with it for 20+ yrs and everyone knew this was happening. Fools.

What’s your answer to the fact that the territory of the island of Taiwan was returned by Japan to China?

Japan recognizes the CCP as China so the island belongs to China.

You are playing with semantics here using the PRC's clever use of the name "China" to create confusion.

At the end of WWII Japan returned Taiwan to the ROC (Republic of China). The ROC is still the governing body of Taiwan.

Japan did not return Taiwan to PROC/PRC (Peoples Republic of China) which did not even exist until 4 years after WWII ended.

The majority of Taiwanese today identify themselves as Taiwanese

Yes, but where should they go? Stay on Chinese territory?

Are you suggesting they go to war to take the island from China?

The people of Taiwan do not need to go anywhere. They are Taiwanese living in Taiwan. It is the PRC (CCP Dictatorship) that is trying to take over Taiwan. Taiwan has never been PRC territory. Ever. This in not "reunification" it would be an invasion followed by occupation and annexation.

China hasn’t won a war in centuries.

Taiwan is an Island and the locals are warriors who have prepared to defend it for generations.

Ukraine is far easier to take on paper and look whats happening.

China is collapsing demographically and financially from within. No chance they take Taiwan.

They are welcome. It's what the U.S. does - talk the talk AND walk the walk.

Locals are warriors...who were overrun and made subservient by US-installed Chiang Kai-shek after Mao kicked him out of China.

The "One China" policy in the UN was the toll to gain access to the mainland. It was just words, and we've learned that is all the CCP-Chinese care about. Facts don't matter.

Until 2010, the trade-off in that policy wasn't too bad. I don't recall the exact year, but Xi started breaking all sorts of promises and treaties. That changed everything, though all non-Chinese businesses were being screwed inside China AND they new it.

Nobody thinks of Taiwan as part of China. Nobody, except delusional CCP.

Hindsight is clear. the One China agreement was/is a mistake. Heck, China won't even accept internationally agreed boundaries, so why would we trust them to accept other rational, 50+ yr old things? Delusional leaders there.

Thank for everything you caused (not DO) Pelosi

No. It is not about one particular industry. CCP China does not want another "China" that is an example of an better alternative to the CCP rule. And in addition they have stacked 50 years of propaganda on unification, and it is almost impossible for them to walk back on the propaganda. (Similar to the situation with XIs "zero covid" program).

The CCP would demand unification, even if all that Taiwan had were rice paddies.

China wants Taiwan's chip manufacturing. They've tried to get it by every method, except invasion and failed to reproduce it.

China does produce semiconductor chips in huge quantities. Besides their home industry, all chip makers around the world including IBM, Intel, TSMC, Samsung have plants in China producing chips in China.

MSM focuses on the most advanced and smallest chips, 7nm, while the larger older chips are the bulk of the demands in the world, such as for auto and appliances, that is where the real money is.

Biden’s US Chips and Science Act of 2022 runs into a problem: China’s market. And that is that China absorbs 70% of the world’s production and puts them into products. As China produces more and more chips of its own due to US sanctions and entity lists, where is the US going to sell the chips that all these new fabs make?

The US can’t sell it to China because the US government, intelligently, cut the sales off to China. Currently, due to the sanctions and what not, US companies have lost $100 Billion per year in chips sales.

Agree it was to access China and it’s potential market and to counter the the former Soviet Union.

Heck, China won't even accept internationally agreed boundaries, so why would we trust them to accept other rational, 50+ yr old things?

Disagree. Two wrongs don’t make a right. US should not lower its standards.

China belongs to Taiwan.

Your response ignores the fact that the World minus 14 countries acknowledges one China and according to the rules of the world and Japan, there is only one China. So Japan returned the island to one China.

I see that you’re saying there are two China’s PRC/ROC and that Japan returned it to the ROC. I understand that the One China policy means there is one China. Are you saying the One China policy means there are two China’s?

How would you explain Japan’s One China policy, that the island was returned to China, and how the island now does not belong to China?

Taiwan was stolen from the indigenous Malay tribes by the Republic of China.

Japan invaded and colonized Formosa Taiwan for 50 years

The people's Republic of China and the Republic of China are both China .

Taiwanese are Chinese.

The Pelosi provocation is unforgivable.

-4 ( +2 / -6 )

Maintaining security as missiles past over the island and military planes buzzed within target distance ..

A pathetic display on both sides.

China hasn’t won a war in centuries.

China is sitting firm in Tibet, in East Turkestan (Xin Yiang), and has grabbed the Paracelsus islands from Vietname and several strategic reefs from the Philippines.

Taiwan is an Island and the locals are warriors who have prepared to defend it for generations.

I said that much. However, while the CCP government has no appetite for a bloody invasion, you can expect things like a gradual blockade.

Ukraine is far easier to take on paper and look whats happening.

Not sure what you are looking at. Firstly, nobody wants to "take Ukraine". Secondly, Russia is liberating the ethnic Russian areas from Zelenskis abuse, and since the Kremlin fights a restricted war and does not want to go scorched earth USA style, that takes some time. As for the Western (Galician, Russia-hating) part, a regime change will do, but alas we keep supporting the Zelenski regime.

China is collapsing demographically and financially from within. No chance they take Taiwan.

China has lots of problems, but so do others.

Mr Kipling

I concur

How did the US maintain security ?

It appears the US stirred up trouble and then ran away

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Is Taiwan a part of China? No, then the Taiwanese will have to leave the island. Japan had to return the island to China at the end of WWII which they did.

Anyone you slice it, you cannot get around the UN and the Shanghai Communique which the US has shown its honor by honoring its agreement.

If you no longer wish to adhere to the rules made, then change the rules first.

Taiwan's foreign ministry on Saturday expressed "sincere gratitude" towards the United States

Just diplomatic courtesy. They know very well that if Xi wanted to occupy Taiwan, he could very well do it. The reason it is not happening is domestic, not some mysterious fear of the self-declared American policeman.

U.S. Indo-Pacific coordinator Kurt Campbell said on Friday that China "overreacted" to U.S. House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi's visit to Taiwan, which set off days of war games by Beijing around the island, which China views as its own territory.

Maybe there was an overreaction to the war games?
