The video was not posted online and there was no advance warning, according to Oakland County Sheriff Michael Bouchard.

Interesting because according to ABC:

"A law enforcement official told ABC News that investigators are actively pursuing information that, Monday night, an undetermined number of students appeared to see a Snapchat video warning of a shooting on Tuesday. Some students who saw the video stayed home from school, though no calls were placed to police regarding the video, the official said."

Someone should have seen something, said something.

RIP to the victims and condolences to their loved ones.

It also sounds like the father needs to be charged with transfer of a handgun to a minor.

The 15-year-old American boy who used a semi-automatic pistol bought during Black Friday sales to shoot his classmates at point-blank range was "absolutely cold-hearted" and went to school with "the intent to kill people," the local sheriff said Wednesday.

This was a horrible tragedy, and criminals who engage in these types of violent behavior (shootings, vehicle homicides) need to be dealt with harshly.

Obviously the instruments used in these incidents are not the focus, but the core of such behavior needs to be the focus.

A 15 yr old cannot legally buy any firearm in the USA. It wasn't Ethan's gun.

James Crumbley needs some jail time and a $10K fine for not properly controlling his firearm. If the father "gave" the weapon to his son, which I doubt, that's another added problem. This story doesn't say how the firearm was secured. That doesn't fit the narrative that all guns are bad.

Gun locks are cheap. $25.

Small gun boxes are cheap. $40.

Either would have prevented this, assuming the keys to unlock weren't sitting in a location the boy knew about.

Charge him like an adult and do something to make it harder for irresponsible people to acquire firearms. It’s easier to buy a gun in the USA than getting a driver’s license.

You are right, of course. Just out of interest, according to Giffords:

Michigan prohibits a federally licensed firearms dealer from selling a firearm unless the sale includes a commercially available:

Trigger lock or other device designed to disable and prevent the discharge of the firearm; or

Gun case or storage container that can be secured to prevent unauthorized access to the firearm.

unless the purchaser can prove they already have one. Also, the law doesn't actually require them to be used.

They can own them though, can't they?

Federal law prohibits handgun ownership by any person under the age 18, with a handful of exceptions.  Giffords says those exceptions are,

Exceptions: Federal law provides exceptions for the temporary transfer and possession of handguns and handgun ammunition for specified activities, including employment, ranching, farming, target practice and hunting.*

A child can be gifted a gun.

Yes, especially a rifle if you live on a farm and depending on the State. Most States you can’t.

In 30 states, a child can still legally own a rifle or shotgun.

To a point, again a lot of variables.

So basically, any kid in America, if they decide they want to target practice. And that's ignoring the millions that are covered by the exception just for living on a farm, or being in a hunting family.

Basically federal government forbids ownership, but provides a means of exception for any kid in the country.

Strangerland,

thats a very good point but you're confusing "temporary transfer and possession", generally under supervision, with ownership?

The shooter certainly wasnt allowed to take the handgun and ammunition to his school.

Also, you'll find that many other countries allow kids to engage in activities for which target practice is important, such as hunting, pest control on the family farm, and sport/hobby shooting. It's not particularly abnormal. and thats the federal law. states have their own regulations, possibly stricter such as only allowing target practice at an official shooting range.
