The people of Gibraltar do not want to be part of Spain.

“inviting blood-stained despots brings shame to our monarchy and tarnishes the diamond jubilee celebrations.”

Son no invitation for former Prime Minister Blair then.

"diamond jubilee"

LOL.

"tensions rise" along with hackles and dander. I imagine this will not be a bloody jolly luncheon then.

I think AKB48 should be invited because they have about the same amount of relevance as the Queen.

AKB has probably more relevance...can anyone remind me why people around the world still keep funding those ultra rich familys ? its 2012 here.... That money could be spent way better!

I totally don't see the consistency in supporting the monarchy while tearing apart their guest list. What country with a monarchy never had a brutal murderous one? Flush all monarchies and get real.

Spain has been moaning about Gibraltar since 1713. Nothing new.

I feel sorry for the Swazis. A small country and most people in the outside world have no idea what has been going on there. It kind of melts into all the other atrocities in that part of Africa. I only know because we have family ties to the country. It must be especially galling to them after everything their relatives have been going through to see the King holed up in the Savoy. That would piss me off big time.

The guest list to the money burning festival of corruption that is the London Olympics is just as bad, murderers, dictators and despots all living it up at the expense of the British taxpayer. Stil,l not like the Olympics actually care about such things as human rights when there is a dollar to made. The 1% are so out of touch and are running out of time. There will be blood.

So much money being spent on this when it could be put to better use. I love the queen but this is ridiculous.

What has this got to do with the London Olympics? Absolutely nothing.

regal jubilee lunch

I'm hoping the royals are not asked to say that three times fast.

Tensions rise over British queen's regal jubilee lunch guest list

Yeah, I am sure the Queen is really vexed by all this... She probably finds it amusing reading about all the little children throwing their toys out of the pram in a temper tantrum.. "But why I am I not invited... It's not fair, it's not fair"....

some one on the forum must love all kinds of queens judging by votes down... I reckon "royal" family should work for their living and cook their own anniversary dinner. oh and vacate the premium land they are on for the good of the needy children and poor families

How come I wasn't invited?

The Spanish king and queen were due to attend the Windsor lunch, but King Juan Carlos had already pulled out, recovering from hip replacement surgery after a fall during an elephant hunting expedition in Africa.

Someone tell me what century we're in?

Was just thinking the same thing? I can't believe there are still "elephant hunting expeditions" going on in Africa! Un-f-ing-believable! Was the Spanish king looking to have some new, fresh ivory items made? Or do they just make exceptions if you have enough money and happen to be a king? Your turn Cleo.

And him the president of the Spanish branch of the WWF, too. I hope they chuck him out.

The Spanish royals seem to have a 'thing' about shooting; Over Easter, the king's 13-year-old grandson shot himself in the foot with a shotgun, even though by law in Spain you must be 14 to handle a gun; In October 2006, a Russian governor launched an inquiry into reports that Juan Carlos had shot and killed a bear while on holiday near Moscow; and in 1956 Juan Carlos accidentally shot and killed his 14-year-old brother while handling a gun.

The Spanish king's hunting trip was big news - though not in Japan it appears- mainly, as Cleo says, because he's prez of WWF Spain. There were calls from to step down from WWF but he apologized, so that's OK. Sounds familiar...

“The government considers it is hardly adequate that in the current circumstances, Queen Sofia take part in Queen Elizabeth’s jubilee,” a spokesman for the Spanish royal household said Wednesday.

Adequate??

Pretty much.

Cleo, there actually was an article in Time or Newsweek a few weeks ago about the 'rich" and hunting. Donald Trump's son is also now into it. Paying big bucks to go and shoot things for fun - protected things at that if you pay the right person enough money. Just disgusting. Hadn't heard about the Spain thing - nor did I know the history. Shameful and he should step down from the WWF. Twisted. Mind you, the UK royals do their own share as well...
