"Experts urged organizations and companies to immediately update older Microsoft operating systems, such as Windows XP, with a patch released by the company."

This can logically be considered as 'motive' behind the attack, right?

Japan Inc will give up its dependency on XP when the old drooling and doddering dinosaurs retire.

Culprits? Well I'd have to say that NSA is one of them, they were the ones who created this program and didn't safe guard it well enough to stop others from taking advantage.

When will these computer things stop happening? it's troublesome enough just backing up, and updating without all these bugs, hacks and spam. Malware, spyware. Why can't someone invent a simple, secure computer that has the same cables, same charger. All it needs is a slot to upgrade your RAM etc.

i think i spend more time updating, replacing and running checks than actually working.

One of the reasons I don't see myself going back to Windows.

@zichi; yeah the BBC are saying something similar but also that it may not be:

First, China was among the countries worst hit, and not accidentally - the hackers made sure there was a version of the ransom note written in Chinese. It seems unlikely North Korea would want to antagonise its strongest ally. Russia too was badly affected.

Second, North Korean cyber-attacks have typically been far more targeted, often with a political goal in mind.

Not sure that this bit is entirely correct. Nokia Korea pulled off the Bangladesh bank heist and apparently is involved in a lot of other thefts and money raising activities.

NNot surprising when you consider its huge expenditure on the military with limited income streams.

Very Convenient isn't it...
