Rockets fired in Baghdad after day of mourning for slain Iranian leader

Everybody (except the American and US dominated media) gets that this guy was a hero to a LOT of the populations in the region, not just Iranians (he had an 80% approval rating, and was identified as the most trusted person in Iran, in the latest public opinion survey of Iranians by the University of Maryland's Center For International and Security Studies)

The rockets fired by Iraqis at the American Embassy (And bases) there, along with the insane number of people who are taking part in the public mourning for him shows how popular he was there, as do the number of countries where they are publicly mourning him.

And that even American allied governments are making sure to call Tehran and make clear that they were neither consulted or informed, and definitely don't approve of America murdering him shows how diverse and deep that approval was.

Just like you could find people in America who didn't approve of, and even opposed, American military retaliation for the 9/11 attacks, you can find people in Iran who don't approve of, and even oppose, and Iranian military response to this attack.

But they're rare, and pretty much irrelevant

The mourners, many of them in tears, chanted "No, No, America," and “Death to America, death to Israel.” 

Nothing new here, been going on since the Shah was deposed in 1979 and U.S. hostages were taken who were released the day Reagan took office.

Trump just made it harder for the Iranians to carry out an attack you could be on the receiving end of.

On the streets of Tehran, many mourned Soleimani.

These people need to be educated on what Soleimani has done to make life worse on this planet.

Trump told his Evangelical ***** last night: “We’ll never get attacked again, we’re safe now!”

And these fools cheered like a pack of hyenas.

Looking at pictures of the mourners, "1000s of people should" be changed to "1000s of men." Hardly a woman to be seen.

And, considering this guy was a national leader, the crowds are rather small. Much smaller than the crowds demanding human rights that were crushed a month or so ago, fo example.

Whether one agrees with the action or not, the palpable fear in the comments from Americans here is rather sad. Why are Americans so afraid of the world? They should think about that. Maybe one shouldn't have troops in virtually every corner of the planet if they are scared of every shadow or threat.

Soleimani killed hundreds and wounded thousands more inside Iraq.

Still, the US should have gotten approval from the Iraqi govt before doing anything. Or at least used a weapon with plausible deniability like an EXACTO.

Isn't this ^ the reason why he was the 'target'? Seems to me like you post facts only to fill in the rest with a bias and false narrative.

Put it another way, if Soleimani is the symbol of popular aggravation against US and its allies, then if YOU were USA, who would you target instead?

I'm not denying the potential for escalation (because you can't reason with stupid). At the same time, I also think the message is unambiguous, you attack USA, you will be meet with a response.

In tge same vein, if you were the supreme leader of Iran, wouldn't it wise for you to re-evaluate now? Because, all things being equal, you could be next. The message is clear and unambiguous.

The middle east is full of shakers and movers though, it isn't easy for the average Joe to have an opinion that's not tainted by ambitious movers and shakers, and people have to be careful they're not visited by goons in the early hours. If your neighbour asks you to march, you'd think twice before saying 'no thanks'.

Iran is going to keep attacking because they are Iran. And don’t confuse accepting reality with supporting it. Tit for tat retaliation is just going to lead to endless war no matter how justified you feel.

This is what Trump fans don’t get. Iran isn’t going to sign a humiliating deal that hands their sovereignty over to the US. Just like North Korea isn’t going to sign a humiliating deal. Just like a China isn’t going to sign a humiliating trade deal.

Trump’s bombs and sanctions haven’t produce anything resembling a deal on any front. He couldn’t even secure funding for his wall at home or get healthcare passed with a majority in Congress.

At some point he will have to learn that negotiation isn’t dictating terms,

Hey, I'm not ruling out the endless war scenario. I'm just saying it's an unambiguous message. You, supreme leader and CiC could be next, no more untouchables.

If you were USA, and you've had 4 decades of constant sniping, 2 decades of Soleimani, wouldn't you draw a line at some point in time?

The conflict between the US and Iran will never end due to the US' position and the foreign policy that comes with it. Last time Iran provoked and Trump only responded with threats so I guess Iran thought Trump would always be a bluff and nothing more. I think this move shows a crystal message. It's a dirty job but someone gotta do it. A president should be able to make difficult decisions even if people hate him for it. I don't like the undecisive ones who just want to play nice and dare not take a clear stand for the fear of ruining their image.

Moqtada al-Sadr, the popular Shia cleric who commands millions of followers in Iraq, has given orders to reactivate his military branch. This was the group responsible for most US military deaths after the Iraq invasion.

Lets hope Trump will visit the funerals... Bone spurs permitting of course.

The Middle East is a melting pot, based on tribal and religious ideologies, the West should never have got involved, but greed has no boundaries, you give us oil and we'll give you military equipment and support to prop up your regimes. This latest assassination by Trump will only lead to further problems, so Obama got Bin Laden , Trump got Soleimani  but at what cost, how many more innocent lives will be lost because of this insane decision, taken by Trump without consultation with congress, as required, and also a slap in the face for the US allies, who were blindsided , and now their citizens are put in danger. What ever happened to good old diplomacy, to those men and women who run those diplomatic embassies who now have to face the prospect of attacks because of the whimsical decision by a man who was partying and playing golf.

If a condition of war exists between two nations, then it is considered acceptable to target for assassination the enemy's senior leaders. Adm. Yamamoto was targeted and killed during World War II in this way.

However, if a state of war does not exist between two nations, then targeting another country's leader or leaders for assassination can be considered a declaration of war. The President of the US is not supposed to declare war without the approval of Congress, and in today's interconnected world, it has become the norm to consult one's friends before going to war. Trump, of course, did neither of these things.

Choosing a man who is almost universally considered corrupt and incompetent to be President, and then expecting good results, is neither logical nor wise.
