I hope all these protesters, as well as the ones in Tunisia and Egypt beware because Islamic fundamentalists are waiting in the shadows to grab power. Al-Qaida must be loving the current turmoil.

I am glad the WiliB and smartacus have realized that Dictatorship is necessary in some states, especially in the middle east, and that Saddam and whats his face was actually an ally to the states until BUSH's admin did not need them anymore...oh the blood the blood on the west's hands..too bad they cant be charged in court cause they sit on top of the world...This world is so simple..The fittest survive/get away with things. Thats it. And i wish the west could just admit it instead of playing psychological games on their people and on the world. But then again, thats like shooting yourself in the foot...

I do not support dictatorships but I have seen too many instances of popular uprisings that result in worse conditions for the people after the revolution. What I would prefer to see in countries like Tunisia, Yemen and Egypt right now are for the governments to call elections so that people can vote for a change of government rather than it falling into the hands of those in the shadows who may promise better days but will deliver nothing.

Just as Facebook and Twitter are playing a big role in these campaigns, if the Islamic hard-liners get in, those same protesting young people will very quickly lose their Internet access.

Dictatorship is one way to keep the islamists at bay. I wish there was better way, but democratic countries seem unable to find one. You will find that invariably in Middle Eastern countries, once you introduce "freedom", the population will vote itself into a brutal theocracy.

The Iraq situation was quite a bit more complicated than the Bush admin suddenly "not needing" Saddam anymore, but I think you know that.

@Lovejapan: At one point in your post, you say that the people of the Middle East deserve to live under dictatorships, but then say that the west has blood on it's hand for putting them in power. Not making much sense in that. So what do you think is best, a dictator of any kind that can stifle freedom to elect represntatives, or opportunity for self governance?

Yes. That is also its downfall when it is faced with a totalitarian ideology that strives to eliminate democracy and is unwilling to defend itself. It is a huge systemic problem.

That is why Thomas Mann said "Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil."

It has always been my dream to visit Yemen, so I truly wish them the democracy they want. It is not our place to dictate them how a democracy should be run. Just as with the Palestinian people electing Hamas, we should accept and respect their choice.

The world needs to realize that the developped countries governments became themselves dictators filling their pockets and reflecting whatever they call it, democracy, freedom ... look at the US ex government they are all billionaires. This has to stop.

Yemen,Tunisia,Egypt,Algeria and elsewhere,there is demand for Adios-Ben Ali, like adios.

Saudi Arabia,no problems,due to being blessed with big income ,from global petro-dollars.

But "they" don´t want democracy. "They" will vote themselves to more islam, aka more Sharia. That is the sad reality in all these countries.
