Delete Roma, insert Jews. Who is the enemy here? And why this now? If they're going to single out a group because they are bad for society, why not simply go after the Muslims who refuse to assimilate into French society? Ah, because they make up a quarter of the population now, wheras the Roma make up just a very very tiny fraction of the population. Guess that makes sense.

I guess you would be very hypocritical in wanting the US government to crack down on illegal aliens here while criticizing the French government for doing the same. (Many of the Roma have crossed the border into France "illegally.")

On the other hand, a very large majority of the Muslims in France come from the former French colonies (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco, etc.), and have a special relationship with France as a result regarding immigration -- similar to how a Puerto Rican can't be an illegal within the United States.

So your criticism that it's numbers that make the difference is based on sheer ignorance.

Jews were bad for the society....?

why not simply go after the Muslims who refuse to assimilate into French society?

What ever thinks of them otherwise, most of the Muslims are there with a legal permit or even citizenship. There is no legal grounds for expulsion. The main group came originally from Algeria, which the French state once considered a part of the French republic.

If they have already some problematic minorities, is that reason to collect even more of them?

because they make up a quarter of the population now

No they don't (even if it is a large number)

No, are the Roma?

most of the Muslims are there with a legal permit or even citizenship.

And those that aren't?

And no I'm not saying they should expel Muslims, I'm asking why Sarkozy feels the need to crack down on the Roma? Are they that big a threat to society? Or is he making them out to be one? And if so, why?

They are not targeting the gypsys for being gypsys. They are targeting them for illegal immigration. Giving them money and paying for their trip home is GENEROUS.

I can't say I am a fan of borders and documentation myself, but what else can we do really?

Well, I do not live in France but if they are similar than the beggar-tourists we have from Romania in Finland - not even anecdotal evidence (even those that try to help them reluctantly admit this) of any of them looking for proper employment (remember by EU law France would have no right kicking out any EU citizen who would actually work for their living), while there is plenty of evidence of theft, mugging and other crime and nuisance - yes, I would consider that bad for society. You would not?

Yes, sovereign states have right to decide which non-citizens have right to live on their territories.
