At least they are still allowed to protest. If Mr. Erdogan wins another election, he will feel unconstrained to prevent any public criticism of him and regime in the future.

The next national election in Turkey is critical to its future and its relations with the west. The nations of NATO dearly want to keep Turkey in NATO and thus keep the Dardanelles controlled by a NATO ally. The great value in this is allows NATO to keep the Russians out of the Med. How much longer they can hold their noses while Turkey devolves into an unstable Islamic dictatorship is uncertain. The crash of the Turkish Lira this week however might be Mr. Erdogan's undoing politically. Time will tell.
