I wish we could posts images in these comments. But we can't, so I'll just have to link.

This is one of the most powerful images of the human spirit's drive for freedom that mankind has ever taken:

2) Do you agree with Trump that Chinese democracy protesters are "vicious and horrible"? Yes or no...

Absolutely No. In the quote you gave, the "they" clearly refers to the Chinese government, otherwise the sentence is nonsensical.

What is up with your reading comprehension?

Japan should open its doors to all Hong Kongers that wish to leave, and cannot be accommodated by the UK. They are very educated, young, healthy and love Japan. Within 10 years, they will be Japanese.

Oh god, I hope not. The Hkers know how important it is to be able to speak English, to get a good education where you are taught to think for yourself, and to value a truly free press, not like the kisha club in Japan where journalists ask pre-planned soft questions. Do you expect HKers to flee from one communist country to another?

I feel sorry for HK - China has one big supporter and friend - Donald J. Trump....

LOL, yeah, the CCP just loves the clamp-down on Huawei (including the arrest of their CEO), the tariffs, the Hong Kong Freedom and Democracy Act. From what universe are you posting?

We already know he gives the CCP and its organs millions of dollars a year to make his clothing line...

What clothing line and what millions of dollars? If his campaign has some of their souvenirs made in China, they will have to pay the same tariffs as everyone else. Nobody by the way has ever said that all trade with China must be stopped completely. That would be ridiculous.

For the benefit of the person who downvoted my previous post, I'm not making this up. It's well documented by the people who were there at the time:

Among the signs in the crowd at Hehai on Christmas Eve, 1988, were placards demanding greater democracy alongside ones proclaiming “death to the black devils.”

How, just before erecting the “goddess of Democracy” in Tiananmen Square, could some proponents of a more open and just society rampage through Nanjing and other cities exhorting their countrymen to “kill the black devils?” The movement’s contradictions infuriated me.

A communist country using capitalism to get ahead? This is a very peculiar idea.

It seems to be working for China.

You are equating lack of freedom with communism.

It may have come across that way but Cuba is Communist also, they have more freedoms but they dont use capitalism.

People in Iran have lack of freedom under a theocracy which obviously does not describe itself as communist.

Correct, theocracy and Communism are different means of ruling but both can have serious lack of freedoms.

Many people seem to have forgotten that the Tiananmen protests were the culmination of 6 months of race riots against African exchange students starting in Nanjing earlier that year. The students burned down the dormitories and chased Africans through the streets after accusing them of bringing Chinese women back to the dorms in violation of the rules. The rage against the Chinese government only began after the police cracked down brutally on the rioting students, and things snowballed to other universities from there. This is why when you look at the images from Tiananmen there are students holding signs saying 'Protect Chinese Women'.

It seems like much of this history has been overlooked and replaced with the more palatable narrative that the students were advocates of freedom and democracy after reading about it in their textbooks.

I feel sorry for HK - China has one big supporter and friend - Donald J. Trump....

Bwahahahahahahahahaha!

Yeah, China just be lovin' those tariffs! Yeah, we need someone who's gonna be tough on China.

Someone like Joe "Come on man, they're not competition for us" Biden!

Well, I'd go easy on the disinfectant - I hear it can cause coughing fits...

1) But don't dodge Trump's comments, if he is so tough on China why does he still give them millions in clothing contracts?

2) Do you agree with Trump that Chinese democracy protesters are "vicious and horrible"? Yes or no...

3) How about his siding with the Communists to kill the protesters through "strength"? Agree? yes or no...

Don't run away to the bunker - tell us your opinion...

The rulers of China are Communist. The only opinions that matter in that country are Communist.

Those with the most freedoms are Communist. So why not call an apple an apple?

China, for all intents and purposes is a Communist country using capitalism to get ahead. Those who are not Communist in china are sheep to be shepherded around. Those who speak up get silenced or re-educated.

China not Communist you say? I say it is until it regains freedom.

You are equating lack of freedom with communism. People in Iran have lack of freedom under a theocracy which obviously does not describe itself as communist. You could argue people in China, particularly women, have more freedom than the Saudis. By the way, I have no time for communism nor theocracy.

A communist country using capitalism to get ahead? This is a very peculiar idea.

about China being communist. China ceased being communist a long time ago,

Tiananmen Square is where the last free Chinese citizens were shown the power of Communist China to induce silence and compliance, through lawful murder by the state against the people.

We remember them and their strength, we remember their goal and their sacrifice. Never to be forgotten and the world ensures they will never truly be silenced.

China's eternal shame.

When asked by Playboy writer Glenn Plaskin if he meant a "firm hand as in China", Mr Trump said the Chinese government almost blew it when students poured into Tiananmen Square.*

"Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," he said.

Thanks linc, I'd not seen that quote before but it just goes to show that he admires brute strength and authoritarianism. Especially when it comes to the millitary. You can see how Macron's parade affected him, for example.

I remember watching the horrors of Tiananmen unfold. For a few days, we'd felt hope as stories came out of China of the soldiers dropping their weapons and joining the protesters. Sadly, it was false hope.

We may never know the full, bloody toll of the massacre.

But one day, the people will rise again. It's inevitable.

Now, Trump's comments on the Tienanmen Square massacre from 1990 have been found;

When asked by Playboy writer Glenn Plaskin if he meant a "firm hand as in China", Mr Trump said the Chinese government almost blew it when students poured into Tiananmen Square.*

"Then they were vicious, they were horrible, but they put it down with strength," he said.

Democracy activists were "vicious and horrible"....and the Communists were to be applauded for showing "strength"....

He hasn't changed his views on democracy I see....

The Tiannamen square massacre was young, idealists standing up for their rights getting brutally suppressed and killed.

There are no massacres happening in the US yet, but the young and idealistic are again getting suppressed.

I lived in Taiwan in '94 and remember every shop had a TV out front to broadcast what news was known (everyone remembers Beijing, but few remember the atrocities committed in the further flung cities which were not recorded) and the sudden influx of non-Chinese to Taiwan seeking haven.

I don’t think the envy of the world “Abe-san” and “Aso-sensei” as you call them will be willing to open the doors like this.

China ceased being communist a long time ago, (if it ever truly was). It's a bloodthirsty regime with Xi and his cult of personality gang.

Yep. Those who keep repeating the idea of ‘Communist China’ should actually listen to what the bully boys in the CCP actually say these days instead of parroting whatever garbage media they are taking in. The CCP hardly mention Communism these days. One Chinese coworker commented to me that it is quite hard to keep up the front of communist values when you have the world’s second largest number of billionaires along one of the world’s largest wealth gaps.

China, China, China. I think the whole world is FED UP with this country by now. The Coronavirus, Hong Kong, Taiwan, colonizing Africa, stealing technology and know-how from other countries. The WHO claimed that China did not share information about Covid but of course, China denied it. So frustrating having to deal with such a country.

Giving Hong Kongers SPR would be a real shot in the arm for Japan - and will probably save their lives at the hands of Communist China.

Agreed, apart from the bit about China being communist. China ceased being communist a long time ago, (if it ever truly was). It's a bloodthirsty regime with Xi and his cult of personality gang.

Fighto!

Giving Hong Kongers SPR would be a real shot in the arm for Japan - and will probably save their lives at the hands of Communist China.

At first I thought that is hyperbole, but then I remembered the organ trade that the CCP is conducting with political prisoners as a source. Yes, if you are HK resident and have been vocal against the CCP, this can very well be a question of life or death.

Rest in Peace to the countless thousands of political victims of Communist China who died after the Tiananmen massacre. The free world will never forget.

In Hong Kong, a law is being passed to make it a crime to disrespect China’s national anthem and 15 well-known veteran activists were arrested and charged with organizing and taking part in illegal demonstrations. Those actions are seen as part of a steady erosion of civil rights Hong Kong was guaranteed when it was handed over from British to Chinese rule in 1997.

A guarantee by the CCP is like the guarantee of a shady used car salesman.

The Tiananmen Masacre by the CCP is one of the darkest memories in humans history!

And again done by China.

6 ( +9 / -3 )

I like the guts of the HK parlamentarians.

This will not happen next year, after the CCP has intensified its stranglehold.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

The Chinese government is not a good organization.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

wrongdoing?.....and what exactly is that? Factual events? The state mowing down its youth, wrongdoings historical record will always show the Chinese communist party killed youth people in a peaceful protest pleading for freedom. Tanks against a group of unarmed youth! It's no wonder why the self proclaimed President for life wants everyone to forget the blood stained Streets of Beijing. But we won't.
