I'm a huge TW fan, read practically every book out on him, know about all the TW stories, and EW stories (tricking his first wife to sign a separation paper) all the while already having Tida lined up. I am tired of hearing about celebrities, sports stars and the like's affairs and infidelities. These are private matters, and should stay that way. This would eliminate the profiteers that sleep with famous people just to sell the movie, phone calls, pictures, text messages, etc.

Looking at this in a fair and balanced way, all i can say is that expecting one to marry ones own color is a racist ideology.

If i said i would only marry a fellow white woman, i would suffer massive critical responses, and rightly so. There seems to be a minority of black Americans who are allowed to spout racist comments in the Liberal media without fear of any punishment.

I find this "Tiger Woods" affair interesting, because it brings to light more than his own attitudes, the attitudes of society around him. It is true that there is a visible tendency of better-off black men to seek white women companions as they reach heights in their careers; it's sort of seeking another trophy mayhaps. I think it's something alike to coveting a seat in a high-class club previously white-men-only. Maybe it's a kind of collective sociological trauma from the days when male black slaves, then former slaves, were forbidden from wooing white females. Black women were abused by slave owners and had children from them (Jefferson anyone?) so for women perhaps the "you can't touch this" trauma is non-existant or very low.

I think there are some similarities on the fetishistic aspect to that of white males that shun white females and exclusively pair with Asian ladies; perhaps this fetish comes from the times of WW2 when the Allies flooded south-east Asia. Asian women were in a vulnerable position then, even enslaved; and as it happens in war zones, many might have seen marrying a white man (soldier) a ticket out of poverty. The dynamics between Asian women and Western men forming fetishistic imagery that endures today may have a background like this.

In Latin America too, in poor areas where the majority is black you hear grandmothers comment about "good hair" and "bad hair" regarding coarse afro hair as "bad" and smooth wavy hair (mulatto type) as "good." So this sort of racial innuendo where marrying a white or at least lighter colored person with better economic standing is seen as desirable still exists. In India, light-skinned brides are actively sought. In Japan, skin-whitening products abound even in supermarket aisles (not even needing to mention surgery to alter features such as eye size and breast augmentation towards a Western standard).

Furthermore, in countries that suffered slavery and or colonization by anglos (or post-war occupation) there are persisting social patterns where for dark-skinned men to marry a light-skinned woman is something of an ambition that may or may not be subconscious. This is what I think.

Azrael, good points. Many of the comments in the article were also said about OJ too when he was on trial for murder.

Speaking as an Black man myself, I have heard the comments that have been presented in the article. While some of it is true, the bottom line is that people should be free to marry whome they wish, and not worry about making a racial statement.

I think most of the angst some Blacks have against Tiger is the fact not so much of who he choses to date, but how he repersents himself. Not saying he needs to be a daishiki afro wearing "brother" but to go about calling himself a “Cablinasian” sort of put him off on some. If he wants to call himself that, then fine, but many felt that if he were not so famous, and had robbed a liquor store, the description for him on the "Be on the Lookout" would simply be: "Suspect Black Male" and not what he calls himself. In other words, some felt that he was in a different reality.

Same is true about Obama. He is half-black, and yet the press does not really play to the fact that he could be considered White by some American standards, just as I have met some mixed white and Asians who prefered to be labeled as white and not mixed.

America's racial field is a complex one, and it looks as if Tiger has to come to face that no matter the amount of money and fame he may make, there will be some that will still have a beef with him becuase of his color, including Blacks, Whites, and Asians.

numbskull, if you were to look at Tiger's late father, he was definately a Black man. Ok, his father may have had some distant Indian relatives, I could make the same claim for myself since my great great grandfather was a slave and half-white, but the bottom line is if you were to every see Earl Woods' records from military service, you would see that it states that he was Black. I remember reading about how he showed Tiger the game of golf, and the fact that some of the courses outside of the ones on the Army posts still had reservations about letting Earl play becuase of his race, that being Black.

Speaking from my experience, I have seen the Black community a bit more accepting to outsiders in regards to racial relations that in White or Asian families. I have met many fellow servicemembers that were white and who married an Asian tell me of stories of how their family cut them off, and the same can be said of the Asian families toward non Asian (in this case Japanese and Korea are whom I am referring).

Bottom line, if Tiger likes blond white women who look the same, then more power to him. If he chooses to not associate as much with the Black community, then again no power. Well, Woods's phenotype is black. All in all for the casual observer, he is black. All this quarter, half, octave whatever-mix-you-are is silly. It's pretty Colonial, actually. As part of all the reading I am doing for my thesis I stumbled upon the blood qualifications required to be a public servant in Spain colonies in the 1700s. The fractions meant the level of "purity" you had (this system was abolished in the 1800s); for example to be a clerk in public office if you were mixed, you needed a certificate making official that you were no less than Octoron (eight parts of 10 white). And so forth. In Mexico City and other royal audience centers there were PAINTINGS (a sort of graphic information for those who could not read well or at all) showing the possible permutations regarding white, black and indian mixes to determinate your racial purity. Your social standing depended on it. Now, discrimination was widely practiced in ALL classifications for example: a mulatto (black/white) wouldn't allow his daughter to marry a zambo (indian/black)... and so on. I found it amusing. "So, how are we doing?" My mother jokingly asked. I told her, "Mom, we are doing quite bad XD."

I find it ridiculous every time on this day and age I find people musing on this sort of things as if they were valid - Yes I do not approve of the Japanese classification of hafu, nikkei, nissei and so forth either. Azrael, you put the cart before the horse. People don't do it as a historical precedent. They do it because of the desire for people to identify themselves and others with groups. From there people go dumb and ascribe crazy meanings to it. That said, I do not believe racial differences are only skin deep, but those that are not are not something to get all discriminatory and hateful over. People who do that are just ignorant. Intelligent people say "Vive la différence!". Variety is a strength, not a weakness. And pointing out differences does not have to be an act of oppression. It can be an act of appreciation.

Nothing surprises me more in this article and chain than the fact that people believe that if the mistresses weren't white that the story wouldn't have made the headlines. Wishful thinking? It is absurd. The fact that this guy cheated on his wife once is pretty bad. But up to 9 times?? He is even cheating on the people he is cheating with! For those who are asking why are all those women coming out now? They have to in order to salvage some money from this. Clearly he can't go on doing this with them, so the little trips and dinner dates are all going to dry up. The only way to make something out of it (and they couldn't possibly be in long term, could they?) would be to make money selling story to the press. I don't feel soory for any of them, but the wife, the kids and parents are all going to hurt bad from this.
