Bravo, Canada. Take them all. . . .

-7 ( +10 / -17 )

I'm all for it!!! Go Canada!

-4 ( +11 / -15 )

My sister is helping a Syrian refugee family get settled in Canada. Now when people ask me what the difference between the U.S. and Canada is, instead of the usual answers about guns and hockey I can point out that we haven't become a nation of xenophobic morons who invade other countries and then offer nothing but sarcastic comments on message boards belittling the efforts of those who try to help people those driven from their homes as a result. The U.S. now looks not only hypocritical but also cowardly on the world stage. Canada doesn't.This makes me proud.

12 ( +17 / -5 )

Looks like DT is going to have to build a wall on his northern border too.

7 ( +9 / -2 )

Americans would do well to take a trip over the border and see what a civilised caring country actually looks like.

I think most Americans are quite content with their country, civility returned to the US on Jan. 20th.

So good job Canada! They enjoy open borders, great for them.

-10 ( +6 / -16 )

"I think most Americans are quite content with their country, civility returned to the US on Jan. 20th."

Bass, I think you need to check what 'civility' means.

4 ( +11 / -7 )

If Canada is OK with letting people in from terrorist breeding hotspots in the world, that's fine by me. Their house, their rules. . . .

-6 ( +7 / -13 )

I think you need to check what 'civility' means.

Actually, I don't think liberals know what the word means.

If Canada is OK with letting people in from terrorist breeding hotspots in the world, that's fine by me. Their house, their rules. . . .

I agree.

-4 ( +9 / -13 )

As a Canadian, Im embarrassed at this glorified hair model who has done nothing but virtue-signal since he entered office. What he won't do is tell the truth about these refugees and how they are hardly assimilating into Canadian society;

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c1IawA37r9o

Sure, lets just open our borders to the likes of animals like these..

-2 ( +8 / -10 )

@Bass

civility noun: formal politeness and courtesy in behaviour or speech.

I just don't see how you think this returned to the US on Jan 20th. Many Trump voters liked him for displaying the exact opposite.

7 ( +12 / -5 )

I just don't see how you think this returned to the US on Jan 20th. Many Trump voters liked him for displaying the exact opposite.

You're confusing "blunt speech" with "civility" I applaud him for his campaign rhetoric and I admire his gentle civility now. Hope that clarifies any confusion.

-9 ( +6 / -15 )

I think most Americans are quite content with their country, civility returned to the US on Jan. 20th.

Only 25% or so of Americans voted for Trump, so I'm not sure where you get this 'most Americans' nonsense from.

5 ( +13 / -8 )

Agree with the essence of Trudeau's message (i.e let's help others as much as we can regardless of their faith/face) but he is imo overdoing it and just want to surf the anti-Trump wave (PR, photo-ops with refugees etc).

I find Trudeau's "To those etc" tweet overdramatic, opportunistic and cheesy.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I find Trudeau's "To those etc" tweet overdramatic, opportunistic and cheesy.

I think it's important to show the world that not everyone is afraid and full of hate.

7 ( +13 / -6 )

Trudeau says Canada will continue to take refugees

Fantastic! Problem solved.

-6 ( +5 / -11 )

Nice story of a Syrian chocolatier from Damascus whose business was destroyed by war finding wonderful success and expansion in Antigonish Nova Scotia. Their success in turn helped some Canadians who were displaced by Fort McMurray wildfires.

One good turn deserves another

In 2015, U.S. merchandise trade with Canada consisted of US$295.2 billion in imports and US$280.3 billion in exports. In 35 states, Canada is also the largest trading partner. Only recently displaced by China at #1, but if change is in the offing with trade with China then that means more trade with Canada not less.

People who hate and screed for a living don't know what to do with Canadians. Sorry about that

7 ( +11 / -4 )

Fair enough stranger. Just felt Trudeau had already reached his 'daily quota' of happy/loving/PC tweets with his "happy lunar new year' messages in half a dozen languages.

Playing the 'we are one' card a tad too much sometimes but I agree he is a decent man.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Once again I appreciate your balanced response.

Haha, nice Canadian response :)

4 ( +8 / -4 )

I agree

Trump voters think that all refugees are terrorists. They also think they are let into countries without any checks and just come from day one after they apply. This comes from their extreme hatred.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Trump voters think that all refugees are terrorists. They also think they are let into countries without any checks and just come from day one after they apply. This comes from their extreme hatred.

show me where a Trump supporter said that.

Asking that immigrants be allowed in after proper processing and vetting is not hatred. Its common sense.

2 ( +7 / -5 )

show me where a Trump supporter said that.

My mistake? Then Trump voters think they are not terrorists and safe people? Then why the ban?

Asking that immigrants be allowed in after proper processing and vetting is not hatred.

See? Trump voters think no such system exists presently and they think that people who want to come to the USA as refugees just declare themselves a refugee, fill out a few forms, buy a plane ticket, and just come into the USA- all in a few days. They believe no proper processing or vetting exists at all now.

3 ( +6 / -3 )

People who hate and screed for a living don't know what to do with Canadians.

I hate to be a pedant, but "screed" is not a verb, at least not the way you are using it.

Regarding the moral superiority of Canadians, I beg to differ. I see little difference between Canada and the States with regard to hate and racism. It's all there. And the smaller towns in Canada, the small liberal towns that say they want refugees, are still almost entirely lily white. I am quite sure the racism will come out as the town fills with people who have no appreciation of Canadian values.

-5 ( +4 / -9 )

commanteer

small liberal towns? Is that meant as an insult? Sorry, doesn't bother us

Moderator: There is no "us." On this discussion board, you may speak only for yourself.

2 ( +6 / -4 )

Regarding the moral superiority of Canadians

The biggest buyer of US products is Canada. Mexico comes in second. And soon (unless Trump declares wall war on Mexico which looks like he is) Mexico is expected to surpass Canada as a number one buyer of US goods in the world. This shows that Trump and his followers just act on hate without thinking. They hate Mexico. They hate Islam so much and ban them while stupidly forgetting to do the same for Saudi Arabia. Think Trump voters!!. Who were the 9/11 attackers?

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Trump voters think that all refugees are terrorists. They also think they are let into countries without any checks and just come from day one after they apply. This comes from their extreme hatred.

I don't hate anyone and don't care what race or ethnicity you are, but I'm so happy that our beloved neighbor to the North is willing to take as many refugees as they can, I'm proud of Canada.

-9 ( +3 / -12 )

I don't hate anyone

Trump voters hate Mexico and that is why they all want the wall- and the US taxpayers will pay since all the illegals will use Bitcoin. Trump and his followers want Mexico out of the US's siight which is the reason for the wall. They want Mexico to simply dissapear.

race or ethnicity you are

But they all cared when they all thought Obama was born in Kenya.

that our beloved neighbor to the North

Trump voters don't like socialist countries with universal healthcare.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

"Trudeau says Canada will continue to take refugees"

"Fantastic! Problem solved."

The legendary screaming GOP crackpot Louis Gohmert of Texas gave dire warnings of Islamic terrorists gathering in Mexico and crossing the border into the US. What is to stop the same thing happening from the north? Aren't there screaming GOP crackpots in the northern states worried about this?

I must say Texan GOPers are probably the nuttiest of the nutty but the northern lunatics need to raise their game.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

commanteer

The word counters your notion of hate in Canada as it means being open to change so it didn't match your topic. It's some kind of a verbal Tourettes tick from the USA like socialism, or taxes. We don't use it that way. Our PM is the leader of the Liberal Party of Canada. Being Liberal not liberal, you see? We use it as a political descriptor not a general adjective for the most part

2 ( +4 / -2 )

Sorry, sf2k, but I have no idea what you are trying to say. What is your point? I think small liberal town is fairly descriptive of, say, Nelson, BC. No need to read too much into it.

I don't generally use the word liberal as it is meant to be used, but as it is commonly understood in the two 97% identical (culturally) countries of the USA and Canada. Simply because, as the Liberal Party of Canada demonstrates, Liberals are not always liberal.

-3 ( +4 / -7 )

Trump voters hate Mexico

No, they hate illegals pouring in from Mexico and other Latin countries. The word once again is ILLEGAL.

and that is why they all want the wall- and the US taxpayers will pay since all the illegals will use Bitcoin. Trump and his followers want Mexico out of the US's siight which is the reason for the wall. They want Mexico to simply dissapear.

Either way, once Mexico pays for the Wall and respect our sovereignty, I think we can all have normalized relationships again.

Trump voters don't like socialist countries with universal healthcare.

I don't like socialism.

I must say Texan GOPers are probably the nuttiest of the nutty but the northern lunatics need to raise their game.

Coming from liberals, the looney insults, I think for us it's pretty much a brand of honor. I may be a nutty Californian, but I do anything to help protect our borders.

-2 ( +5 / -7 )

Mexico pays for the Wall

How? There is bitcoin.

I don't like socialism.

So you don't like Canada.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

How?

More than a dozen ways.

There is bitcoin.

They can use that and we offset the price from the aid we give them or taxes we can imbpose, there's a smorgasbord of things Trump and congress can do to get the money.

So you don't like Canada.

I don't like hockey.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

America does not have a good Christian witness to the world now anyway...

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Why is it canada will let in refugees and treat them like royalty when there are impoverished children forced into the streets or filthy foster homes who can't get a dime of aid to improve their situation?

Infuriating

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Why is it canada will let in refugees and treat them like royalty when there are impoverished children forced into the streets or filthy foster homes who can't get a dime of aid to improve their situation?

Canada has a welfare system, and foster homes get money for aid, so your premise is incorrect.

The entire USA notion that immigrants are a burden is continually disproved with Canada. We're all in a globe floating in a universe and have this amazing world of abundance around us. Over time we learned to embrace that abundance and seek the better part within ourselves beyond pigmentation language or religion. I'm just glad people still want to come here. It's not perfect nor without challenges to be sure but far better than grandfather or great grandfather or however far back one needs to go to consider your own family beginnings in this country. That includes Empire Loyalists who left the USA for better prospects in Canada. Hence our direct cousin relationship but respected differences. Do you want to go to a restaurant that's empty or one that's busy? The menu may be plain but the warmth and mirth are free. Come on by if you can

The entire USA notion that immigrants are a burden is continually disproved with Canada.

Who said that?

We're all in a globe floating in a universe and have this amazing world of abundance around us. Over time we learned to embrace that abundance and seek the better part within ourselves beyond pigmentation language or religion. I'm just glad people still want to come here.

I'm equally happy when people come to the US, I just want them to come in legally, other than that, the door is always open.

Come on by if you can.

I feel like this the US problems is not Canada's and vice versa, the US should do what it needs to do to keep its borders safe and if people don't like it, they can migrate somewhere else. I think we have more than enough problems with our open borders and need to make it a high priority get them under control, the same goes with dealing with radical Islam, I'm not going to criticize Canada and their foreign affairs how they deal with immigrants and and they shouldn't worry about how we deal with our immigrant situation.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

Im with the people who say great, let anyone who wants go to Canada. Problem solved. A perfectly safe place has been made available for all these people to start a new life. So why are they still pushing so hard to go to the USA instead?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

Harry_Gatto writes Looks like DT is going to have to build a wall on his northern border too.

If so the wall will be needed to keep moderate Americans from fleeing to Canada, like the past Berlin Wall that kept East Germans under their repressive regime from fleeing to West Germany.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"Looks like DT is going to have to build a wall on his northern border too."

And Canada will pay for that border.

-2 ( +2 / -4 )

The entire USA notion that immigrants are a burden is continually disproved with Canada.

You do realize that Canada's immigration policy is built around their labor needs and does not allow chain migration? And if Canada is so compassionate why don't they follow Germanys example and allow in a million refugees? Since Canada does not allow a significant number of Muslims into their country they must be anti-Muslim bigots.

My mistake? Then Trump voters think they are not terrorists and safe people? Then why the ban?

You mean the temporary ban from seven countries that have the worst problem with terrorism? Muslims stream into America today despite the temporary ban - from every other Muslim nation around the world. Stop generalizing for political purposes and try understanding the actual policy and not what you want it to be so you can score political points.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

You mean the temporary ban from seven countries that have the worst problem with terrorism?

Not Saudi Arabia. Does anyone remember where the 9/11 hijackers were from?

4 ( +5 / -1 )

Trudeau is a fool. As is McCallum (still able to do (further) damage in his new role as ambassador to china).

0 ( +2 / -2 )

"Not Saudi Arabia. Does anyone remember where the 9/11 hijackers were from?"

You're making the mistake of even suggesting Trump is interested in dealing with this issue head on.

These are gestures designed for people who make demented whooping noises at rallies.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Saudi Arabia is responsible for sprouting the terrorists for doing the most damage to American soil (9/11) and that backward country is not banned? Are Trump supporters kidding me? I can't wait for the press secretary to be quizzed on this.Trump banned the wrong countries.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

You're making the mistake of even suggesting Trump is interested in dealing with this issue head on.

These are gestures designed for people who make demented whooping noises at rallies.

Just leave the humor, dude. I will say this and I'll say it again, m no fan of the Saudi government and maybe Trump should add them to the 7 list of Countries that go through extreme vetting.

-4 ( +1 / -5 )

@Bass

No humour intended. That's who these measures are aimed at.

Why do you think Trump omitted Saudi Arabia from the list? Any ideas?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Once again the US could learn a few lessons from their Northern brothers, and can also see what real courage and leadership looks like. First the US obviously needs to look inwards -- a good, hard look, and realize how low the bar has gone.

Way to go, Canada!

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Wolfpack

You do realize that Canada's immigration policy is built around their labor needs and does not allow chain migration?

Yeah, it's called vetting. Isn't that what Trumpkins is all up and bloviating about? Also refugees are not the same as immigrants. We take in roughly 30K a year in refugees and 250K in immigrants since 2001. Not a single year comparison compared to some but one of the largest immigration countries. It's within manageable rates with declines in population and economic needs.

USA stranded green card residents, their own citizens. That's devaluing people's rights who have a long standing and could have been living there for years among other things like contributing to your economy.

The 7 countries selected have never attacked the USA. Those that have are off the list because Trumpkins has businesses there.

The possibilities of retaliation from those who have attacked the USA before are still open to do so again. You've done nothing to stop that and only antagonized them to act. Congrats

2 ( +2 / -0 )

"I think Saudi Arabia should be on the list too. Lets go ask the Obama Administration why they are not."

Let's deal with the here and now. Do you have any ideas why the biggest sponsor of Islamic terrorism didn't make the list?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

People keep saying that this policy will offend or anger Muslims and then they hint that that this will cause them to commit acts of terrorism in return. How can that be when I have been told for years that Islam the religion has no cause and effect relationship to terrorism? Someone would become a terrorist over an immigration policy?

And also the President is within his rights to take the action he did under the US Code

U.S. Code § 1182 - Inadmissible aliens: "Whenever the President finds that the entry of any aliens or of any class of aliens into the United States would be detrimental to the interests of the United States, he may by proclamation, and for such period as he shall deem necessary, suspend the entry of all aliens or any class of aliens as immigrants or nonimmigrants, or impose on the entry of aliens any restrictions he may deem to be appropriate."

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Oh, Canada! And the scoreboard reads Canada 1, US 0.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Let's deal with the here and now. Do you have any ideas why the biggest sponsor of Islamic terrorism didn't make the list?

If I had to guess it would be this:

Saudi Arabia was the top destination for U.S. arms in 2011–2015, purchasing 9.7 percent of U.S. exports. Recent sales approved by the U.S. State Department include Black Hawk helicopters worth a total of $495 million and Patriot Missiles worth $5.4 billion, as well as a $1.3 billion sale of air-to-ground munitions meant to replenish stocks used in Yemen.

But you cant get off the hook by just saying deal with here and now. Obama and his people had 2 chances in 2 years to add Saudi Arabia to the list and chose not to. So it seems that the President who has been in office for one week agrees with that previous determination for now and chose not to add them as well.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Once again the US could learn a few lessons from their Northern brothers,

No, we don't. Not at all, if Canada wants to take the risk, more power to them, doesn't phase us one bit.

and can also see what real courage and leadership looks like.

Jihadists are considered to have a lot of courage as well.

Why do you think Trump omitted Saudi Arabia from the list? Any ideas?

First the US obviously needs to look inwards -- a good, hard look, and realize how low the bar has gone.

We did, that's why we elected Trump.

Why do you think Trump omitted Saudi Arabia from the list? Any ideas?

Good question, wonder why the media didn't debunk the outrageous lie that the ban is not a Muslim ban. Indonesia is a Muslim nation is it not and the largest? How about Qatar, Jordan, Morocco They are also not part of the ban, any ideas?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

Good question

Hillary would have. Should have voted for her.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

When Krauthammer sounds reasonable...

"Some claim that putting America first is a reassertion of American exceptionalism. On the contrary, it is the antithesis. It makes America no different from all the other countries that define themselves by a particularist blood-and-soil nationalism. What made America exceptional, unique in the world, was defining its own national interest beyond its narrow economic and security needs to encompass the safety and prosperity of a vast array of allies."

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

clamenzaJAN. 29, 2017 - 01:23PM JST Asking that immigrants be allowed in after proper processing and vetting is not hatred. Its common sense.

Erm... "common sense" would have Saudi Arabia on that list, seeing as the vast majority of terrorism that's impacted the US has come from that nation's citizens. But hey! Trump has business deals in SA, so... nah.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

"Why do you think Trump omitted Saudi Arabia from the list? Any ideas?"

"Good question, wonder why the media didn't debunk the outrageous lie that the ban is not a Muslim ban. Indonesia is a Muslim nation is it not and the largest? How about Qatar, Jordan, Morocco They are also not part of the ban, any ideas?"

I don't remember reading that it's a Muslim ban. I remember reading that it's a ban on people from certain Muslim majority countries.

Getting back to the point. Why do you think Saudi Arabia wasn't included? An answer without 'Obama', 'What about...?' and 'LOL/ROFL/LMAO' would be welcomed.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Did you not read what I wrote? this is an answer without Obama being mentioned. Saudi Arabia is our ally according to the State Department and they also buy a lot of weapons.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

As much as I hate defending Trump, I actually have a possible idea on why SA was not mentioned. Executive orders can only extend existing laws, they cannot be used to create new laws. The order that bans the people from the countries given specifies Syria directly, then makes reference to another law that lists the other countries. If there was no law that mentions SA, then Trump wouldn't be able to include it. Unfortunately, multiple administrations in a row seem to have some sort of love for SA that has kept them immune - even though SA was the source of the 9-11 hijackers.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

@Strangerland - Your post is spot on. The U.S. government (prior to and post 9/11) has had an unhealthy relationship with Saudi Arabia. This relationship has transcended political party and as usual, when dealing with U.S. politicians, it is all about the money. This is a very complex issue and has little to do with Trump (or any other single President for that matter).
