Good move.

How exactly do regular everyday taxpaying Americans benefit from these drills halfway across the globe?

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

Yes, what a 'great' move to decide on these things arbitrarily without consulting South Korea, Japan, or even the military of your own country.

Bravo.

13 ( +14 / -1 )

President Donald Trump vowed at his summit with the North's leader Kim Jong Un to cancel "provocative" joint drills.

"Provocative". That's exactly what the north koreans were saying, no ?

I thought the drills were meant as a way to reinforce cooperation between the US and SK militaries, not to provoke the norh.

The cost of the American military with its 24,000 troops in South Korea is about $1.8 billion and out of that South Korea pays $867 million. South Korea also paid $11 billion or 92% of the costs to update Camp Humphreys.

The American defense budget is $800 billion so the saving from the ending of war games will save nothing important. When there is a military it also needs training otherwise when they are required to go into action they must be trained too.

The day may arrive when the troops can leave but while there they need the constant training.

Trump's statements in Singapore also point to what appears to be a growing gap between him and Defense Secretary Jim Mattis.

Very strange a president would not have taken his Secretary of Defense to such an important military summit. General Mattis for the chop?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

This guy probably makes plans at the spur of the moment. Surprised his didn't change his mind on the plane again.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

How are Trump supporters going to justify this one? Trump as 4-dimensional chess master? Making America great again? Sticking it to the deep state swamp generals? Leftist media bias? Crooked Hillary's emails and Benghazi?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

How are Trump supporters going to justify this one? Trump as 4-dimensional chess master? Making America great again? Sticking it to the deep state swamp generals? Leftist media bias? Crooked Hillary's emails and Benghazi?

Definitely crooked Hillary's emails and Benghazi.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Justify what? He is the President and based on the meeting he decided to do something. So he will come home and order the military to do so, and they will follow his orders. Its pretty simple.

-12 ( +0 / -12 )

@blacklabel are you being deliberately obtuse? Justify this decision to Congress and the American public. Yeah, he can make this decision for now, but it won't last or mean anything if it has no public or congressional support. He's not actually a unilateral dictator.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

The Commander in Chief can certainly cancel any military drills he wants. Do you think Congress has to approve that?

Military drills are preparations for war, which we are not preparing for with North Korea at this time. Plus, the drills I know of are generally held in early spring so plenty of time to reinstate them for next year if needed.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Very strange a president would not have taken his Secretary of Defense to such an important military summit. General Mattis for the chop?

I don't think it's strange at all, Kelly was there and that was more than enough, Mattis was probably with the troops somewhere and Kelly is a better spokesperson for the military and Mattis through and through a military general. Now if Kelly wasn't there, I would have been a bit more concerned, but having Kelly there who can better articulate the military position in a more diplomatic way was a very good thing.

How are Trump supporters going to justify this one? Trump as 4-dimensional chess master? Making America great again?

Yes, indeed!

Sticking it to the deep state swamp generals?

Better than the deep state political Democrats which make policy, which is very frightening.

Leftist media bias? Crooked Hillary's emails and Benghazi?

Let's see what the IG report says on Thursday, should be interesting.

What a foul, underhanded thing to do to our South Korean allies. What a foul, underhanded signal to our own military. What an underhanded act of deceit toward Japan. What a free gift to North Korea. What an endorsement of unconstrained Chinese military power.

He is what we get when fools vote and Russia interferes in our elections for him.

Military drills are preparations for war, which we are not preparing for with North Korea at this time.

So, all the other war games were preparing for war?

Hmm. Still, it's good that the US military will finally begin to be ousted from the region.

0 ( +0 / -0 )

South Korea was asking Trump to cancel drills just a few weeks ago. Do you really think he did this without talking to Japan or South Korea about it?

https://www.marketwatch.com/story/trump-bows-to-south-korea-desire-to-cancel-planned-joint-training-exercise-2018-05-19

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

That is correct, military drills prepare for war. We are still officially at war in Korea, remember?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

*So, all the other war games were preparing for war? *

Hmm. Still, it's good that the US military will finally begin to be ousted from the region.

No, they won’t, that’s like McDonald’s will stop selling fries.

They can continue their games off the Canadian coast in preparation for the upcoming conflict there.

On the Hudson Bay? For what, a conflict with some polar bears?

-5 ( +0 / -5 )

We just doubled the number of our Marines in Norway, to counter tensions against Russia.

Who to hear liberals tell it are Trump's best buddies in the whole world and who he is beholden to. Yet.....

Troops in South Korea arent going anywhere. Even if there is a unified Korea I still see troops being there for the first decade of that at least.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

What a foul, underhanded thing to do to our South Korean allies. What a foul, underhanded signal to our own military.

So which is it, the left think we shouldn't conduct the military war games or we should? Gosh you guys are so indecisive and confused.

What an underhanded act of deceit toward Japan.

How so? Don't rant explain, but the left usually don't, it undercuts their whiny argument.

What a free gift to North Korea. What an endorsement of unconstrained Chinese military power.

Again, how so? As big and bad as China or the left make it out to be, they aren't too gleeful on being hit with sanctions either.

He is what we get when fools vote and Russia interferes in our elections for him.

We could have gotten Hillary then the Country would have collapsed completely.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Do you think Congress has to approve that?

According to bass4funk, yes!

Military drills are preparations for war, which we are not preparing for with North Korea at this time.

Well you have stated you were previously in the U.S. military so you must know the troops are for defense of South Korea and any military force need regular training exercises to keep their levels up. That becomes even more important when the military forces are from two different countries, language and culture. The lack of high level training will cost lives if called to action.

In the Korean War, 20,000 Koreans were killed every single day.

South Korea was asking Trump to cancel drills just a few weeks ago. Do you really think he did this without talking to Japan or South Korea about it?

That was a single exercise which happened a couple of weeks ago when President Moon thought it was better to suspend those until after the summit meeting. He had no idea Trump would end the war games.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

bass4funk

So which is it, the left think we shouldn't conduct the military war games or we should?

The answer is very simple and I speak for the sake of the troops. While there are troops in South Korea and also in Japan, they need the constant training to ensure the safety of their lives should they ever be called into action. When the troops leave then the war games stop. I hope that day will come too but probably not at least within the next ten years.

There will be no united Korea but there may be two Koreas at peace and major changes within the Northern one. Who's going to pay the $6 trillion for a limited united Korea?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

to remove the troops permanently, yes. To cancel a military drill, no.

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/12/world/asia/trump-military-exercises-north-south-korea.html

Its not clear how President Moon reacted, it only mentioned unnamed South Koreans.

But Mr. Trump’s promise to end joint military exercises with Seoul left many South Koreans stunned.

The troops can train within country and also can go to specialized training areas that are not right off the coast of North Korea. They arent cancelling all drills of course. Just the yearly "war games". Im sure the details will all be worked out and they can be changed back as needed.

“We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money,” the president said

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

I told everyone on a previous thread that Dump would give NK anything, so he could get some media attention away from the Russian investigation. Every time some more damaging information comes out or the Republicans pass a damaging bill, Dump comes out with another publicity stunt. The Republicans just repealed all of the laws that was preventing us from having another financial crisis this week. Not much coverage because of this stunt.

Dont worry! It is just another bait and switch example from the Con-artist-in-Chief. In a couple of days, he will change his mind and return to insulting Kim again because he isn't getting the praise that he wants. Running for office like a reality TV show may have gotten him elected, but TV show ratings and public opinion are not the same. He doesn't realize that the public is fickle. The public isn't going to stroke his ego like his employees or the prostitutes in his personal life.

You can lie and make up stories on TV, but the intelligent people who usually don't watch reality TV actually checks facts.

“We will be stopping the war games, which will save us a tremendous amount of money,” the president said

So help me out here because if you are a VET you may know. The total cost of the US military in South Korea is $1.8 billion with $867 million paid by South Korea.

I can't find any figures how much the war games cost and whether the cost is part of the costs or separate. What's you idea on the costs?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

the left think

Anybody who disagrees with Trump is a leftist. What logic.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

We just doubled the number of our Marines in Norway, to counter tensions against Russia.

Normally 300 marines are sent for six months of training which could now be increased to 700 because the Norwegian government will allow it and has nothing to do with Russia and more to do with terrain training.

Yup, North Korea gave vague promises that are no different than what we've seen since the late 90s. In return, we gave up joint exercises with SK, something that NK has been demanding for just as long. And something that China has always wanted. Trump making China great again, as usual. This is why we can not have a POTUS who is actively in business and can use his position for personal gain rather than the benefit of this nation.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

North Korea is playing Trump for the fool he is. They must be uncorking the champagne in Pyongyang.

Is Trump that stupid, or is he in sympathy with them just as he is with Russia? His contempt for democracy, the press, the rule of law and our allies sure suggests as much.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Who needs drills? They cost soooo much money. We didn't give anything away.

Trump is actually making these tough talking conservatives stand down.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

I don't think it's strange at all, Kelly was there and that was more than enough, Mattis was probably with the troops somewhere and Kelly is a better spokesperson for the military and Mattis through and through a military general. Now if Kelly wasn't there, I would have been a bit more concerned, but having Kelly there who can better articulate the military position in a more diplomatic way was a very good thin

Except General Mattis is the Secretary of Defense and General Kelly the Chief of staff so strange Trump didn't take Mattis with him, unless there are major tiffs between them and then Mattis will be chopped.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Without getting anything really substantial in return, Trump has thrown the baby out with the bathwater. He said these U.S. - S. Korean military exercises were very expensive and provocative. If these joint exercises are so expensive, then why does Trump go on these frequent golf trips of his for 3 or 4 million bucks a pop?

Big win for NK and China. Big loss for SK and Japan.

Here's a president who just a few weeks ago foolishly said that Canada burned the White House down during the War of 1812. This is why it's so important for a president to have a basic understanding of history. Unfortunately, Trump doesn't possess a basic knowledge of U.S. history let alone world history. If these joint military exercises stop based on Trump's 6th sense, then he has seriously screwed up. The joint U.S. - SK military exercises are necessary and defensive in nature, and not provocative as Kim Jong Un and Trump claim.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

This is what happens when Trump does not prepare for an important summit and then needs to stick to the script and not to make his usually off the cuff comments. Trump is predictable in being unpredictable and somewhat unstable with his mannerism.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The answer is very simple and I speak for the sake of the troops.

Come again? Well, I speak for the Pentagon, come on! Lol

While there are troops in South Korea and also in Japan, they need the constant training to ensure the safety of their lives should they ever be called into action. When the troops leave then the war games stop. I hope that day will come too but probably not at least within the next ten years.

Yes.

There will be no united Korea but there may be two Koreas at peace and major changes within the Northern one. Who's going to pay the $6 trillion for a limited united Korea

Not the US.

Except General Mattis is the Secretary of Defense and General Kelly the Chief of staff so strange Trump didn't take Mattis with him, unless there are major tiffs between them and then Mattis will be chopped.

I doubt it and besides, Trump is the President, he can take whomever he wants to take, he brought Bolton, that’s already having one pit bull by his side that the NK hate, that’s really the person they need to be worried about.

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

Who needs drills? They cost soooo much money. We didn't give anything away.

Trump is actually making these tough talking conservatives stand down.

I think the bigger question is, why liberals can only listen to what they want to hear and not listen to the facts? Trump twice said, he wants to bring the troops home, but not now and especially not when the North doesn’t completely denuclearize, that’s not going to happen and the second thing he twice said, he wants the war games to stop, but again, if there is no proof that NK starts the process of denuclearization or attempts to fire a missile by next year 2019 Spring, the war games will resume. This is why I invest in a $12K 120 Inch Dolby surround sound system to make sure I get every detail the left try to spin.

What the heck are those flying things in the background of the picture?

Rings of smoke created when smoke grenades (for obscuring troop movement and baffling guided missiles) burst in air.

Definition of a liberal = someone who doesn't love Trump.

@OssanAmerica

North Korea gave vague promises that are no different than what we've seen since the late 90s

It's actually even earlier. This is yesterday's wording:

Reaffirming the April 27, 2018 Panmunjom Declaration, the DPRK commits to work toward complete denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula.

And this is the wording from the 1992 Joint Declaration between North and South Korea.

In order to eliminate the danger of nuclear war through the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula, to create conditions and an environment favourable to peace and the peaceful unification of Korea, and thus to contribute to the peace and security of Asia and the world, declare as follows...

The difference is that yesterday's agreement, far from being a landmark, echoes previous agreements endorsed by the North, but (unlike those agreements) contains absolutely nothing of substance. "Denuclearization of the Korean peninsula" is a stock phrase that North Korea has willingly employed under all three leaders, Kim Il Sung, Kim Jong Il, and Kim Jong Un. It's also a staple of KCNA dispatches going back to the 1980s at least. Naive Americans who think Trump has finally got something seem determined to find this out the hard way, when they could simply do what other people do and read a little history, or look at what Korea-watchers have to say.

This agreement, despite some embarrassingly vigorous polishing, fails to shine.

Trump has more respect K.J. than Tredau jr. and Merkel because he likes tough guy that dares to fight back. Watch trump's TV show you knows he fires timid people

It may be good to withdraw American troops from S-Korea and eventually Japan at the end.

The US forces are a mirror of a divided nation. One can seriously doubt the capabilities of biased rednecks working together with biased negroes :)

Yep, and in a fews years time they will all be stationed in North Korea.
