It's good to know that when tens of millions of Americans are worried about the Affordable Care Act being cancelled without even the slightest attempt to replace it, instead of buckling down and working out a better system, Trump is spending his time worrying about transgender people's birth certificates.

But then it's no surprise the most anti-science Republican administration in history would fixate on birth certificates instead of acknowledging the scientific fact of gender identity.

So, when the Orange Coifed Imbicile said back in April 2016 that he had no problem with transgendered people using the restroom they most felt comfortable with, he was lying?

Or is he lying now by allowing others in his inner circle to dictate public policy?

Color me "not surpised."

The man has all the honesty and integrity of a snake oil salesman.

Our long worry about men dressing up as women to get into women's bathrooms to molest children can finally be put to rest. We saved everyone. Well, except for the ones in the boys bathroom, which I guess is where these guys will go.

I might be wrong(I usually am) but I am starting to think all of THE twitLER in chief and all his political gaffes is merely a well orchestrated distraction to cause people to lose focus of the fact that many legislation has been passed, some of which are mind boggling such as the bill that allows waste from coal mines to. E dumped into the water and many other questionable and downright sinister bills. Now why is a bill about who and where an individual chooses to poo more of a priority than JOBS,THE DEFICIT,NATIONAL DEBT and other important things affecting the nation??

11 ( +13 / -2 )

It was the first question at the press briefing today, Trump I'm positive isn't giving it any any more thought than he did during the campaign. What Spicer said was that the transgender bathroom issue is "not a priority" but the move has been dictated by an upcoming Supreme Court case and whether the administration wants to continue the Obama administration's line on this.

Should be a state decision not federal. Trump is right. A lot of folks sure love huge government these days.

-5 ( +6 / -11 )

Why not just make them all unisex restrooms with private stalls? Young children should not be using restrooms unattended regardless of whether the restrooms are unisex or gender specific.

pointofviewFEB. 23, 2017 - 10:02AM JST Should be a state decision not federal. Trump is right. A lot of folks sure love huge government these days.

Have you by chance actually thought this through? The Obama position is that schools should allow people to use the gender they identify with. That's not big government, that's small government as it empowers people to act according to their identity. Trump shifts the decision to state governments rather than national, but that's not relevant to a big/small government question.

Trump's position benefits local governments who want to impose limits on people's behavior based on birth certificates, a government -issued document. That is big government. In effect a local government bureaucrat assigns you a gender at birth based on your physical sex, denying the science that shows those two things are not always the same. Then the person is required to change their behavior for the rest of their lives to conform to a government document.

What this issue really shows is that most Republicans are willing to sell out their small government principles in a heartbeat if it gives them the ability to deny science regarding complexities of gender that make them uncomfortable. They want a big government to order people to conform to the tiny pigeon-holes they believe in.

Trump had no comments on this either way and it is not a priority. The only issue here is that he wants this to be determined at the state/local level rather than at the federal level. This make sense, because if the issue is important to you either way, you can choose to live somewhere that is either for or against it. Totally an issue for each state to decide under states rights.

-7 ( +3 / -10 )

The Obama position is that schools should allow people to use the gender they identify with.>

The problem was that it wasnt a recommendation of should it was a directive of MUST. Then people of states who didnt want this had it forced upon them by the federal government despite voting against it. They were still treated as somehow wrong in not wanting it. Then all the activists jumped in once Obama said it was a MUST and concerts were cancelled, sports events were moved, and other financial impact actions were taken upon states that didnt want it.

It is best left up to the people who live there (not the federal government and activists) if they want themselves or their wives or daughters sharing bathrooms with men who can simply self identify as women.

Snake oil saleseman has more integrity and honesty by far, and is far more convincing.

SuperLib: "Well, except for the ones in the boys bathroom, which I guess is where these guys will go."

Along with Republican Senators like Larry Craig, yes. In fact, maybe that's why they want such men there -- free feels.

The cry of "state and local level" is the go-to workaround to federal anti-discrimination laws for the GOP. Because you can be bigots if it's only on the state and local level.

@katsu,

Incorrect. It was made a big govt issue hence Obamas guidance . Secondly, there would be no state lawsuits against the feds if it wasnt big govt.

katsu78 wrote: "Trump is spending his time worrying about transgender people's birth certificates." Now he isn't. He's referred the matter to individual states.

katsu78 wrote in response to pointofview: "... In effect a local government bureaucrat assigns you a gender at birth based on your physical sex, denying the science that shows those two things are not always the same." Are you suggesting that "assignment" of gender be delayed until a certain age? And it's not a "local government bureaucrat" who determines the newborn's gender, but the attending doctor or midwife. These people are professionals licensed by states. The determination is straight forward except in the case of hermaphrodites. As for "denying the science", are you aware that there is a difference of opinion among scientists? A biologist will make a decision based on chromosomes - these are facts. Psychologists will make a decision based essentially on how their patients "feel" - that is not a fact, but an opinion. As for myself, I'd welcome a transgender man in a toilet as I'm rarely the object of "penis envy". :)

Yeah, eleven states tried to pull similar horse puckey back in 1861. It didn't pan out well for them.

Civil rights don't depend on what your zip code happens to be.

pointofviewFEB. 23, 2017 - 02:14PM JST Secondly, there would be no state lawsuits against the feds if it wasnt big govt.

Your first sentence is impossible to parse, but this one is flat-out wrong. You're trying to pass off "big government" as synonymous with "federal government", and they aren't remotely the same thing. "Big government" is a measure of the degree to which a government regulates a person's choices. And while I would say this is a concept that is impossible to quantify with any degree of exactness, it's an entirely different concept from the federal government, that is a level of organization at which regulation may (but does not need to) occur. To confuse the two is absurd as suggesting that a person can't feel cold if their feet are cold unless their head is also cold.

Bill MurphyFEB. 23, 2017 - 05:07PM JSTAre you suggesting that "assignment" of gender be delayed until a certain age? And it's not a "local government bureaucrat" who determines the newborn's gender, but the attending doctor or midwife.

No, the doctor determines a person's biological sex. That can (usually) be determined by a simple observation of the reproductive organs. Gender is far more complex. There is in fact no reason government should be involved in regulating gender at all.

As for "denying the science", are you aware that there is a difference of opinion among scientists?

Opinion is irrelevant in science, even the opinions of scientists. What matters is what the evidence shows, and the evidence shows very conclusively that biological sex and gender are two entirely different things.

Now that makes a lot of conservatives uncomfortable because they like to imagine they live in a biologically reductionist world where they can figure out the mental makeup of everyone they look at by looking at their bodies on a surface level, but the science does not and never has supported that. So people who try to get big government involved in regulating people's genders are either just trying to legislate away science that makes them uncomfortable...

...or they're just bigots trying to abuse transgender people because for cowardly bullies who have nothing to feel proud of in life it feels good to punch downward at people more vulnerable than yourself.

This is a good example of irony. You go from a blatant logical fallacy (fallacy of relative privation) to banging on about anti-science Republicans. Apparently you love science but ignore logic?

IllyasFEB. 24, 2017 - 06:38AM JST You go from a blatant logical fallacy (fallacy of relative privation)

Look, it's cute you heard a new word and want to try using it in a sentence, but you really don't appear to understand what "fallacy of relative privation" means. FoRPs involve trying to substitute something worse than the topic of discussion and using the gap in their relative wrongness to distract from the topic at hand. "You shouldn't be bagging on Hitler, at least he wasn't as bad as Stalin," that sort of thing.

My contention isn't that transsexual people using the restroom of their gender identity isn't a lesser problem because the Trump GOP administration's inept failure to put together a working healthcare system is worse, I'm saying transsexual people using the restroom of their gender identity isn't a problem at all full stop, and the Trump GOP's insistence on focusing on that instead of solving the very real and pressing problems facing Americans reveals their ineptitude and/or their bigotry.

Apparently you love science but ignore logic?

It's cute you think you can incorrectly lecture me on logic and then toss in a personal attack without it being noticed, but maybe next time you could make an argument of substance rather than wasting everyone's time with this nonsense?

2 ( +2 / -0 )

@katsu,

You are incorrect. The problem is that lefties and a large portion of the population want big govt decisions. Why did Obama`s guidance come about?

-4 ( +0 / -4 )

pointofviewFEB. 24, 2017 - 11:09AM JST The problem is that lefties and a large portion of the population want big govt decisions.

Aww..... no. That's what the imaginary versions of "lefties" and "a large portion of the population" that live only inside your head so you can imagine yourself as superior to others want.

What the vast, overwhelming majority of those people actually want in real life is for transgender people to be able to make decisions based on their gender and for small-minded people to not be able to restrict their freedom.

It's sort of like how I have every right to imagine you're secretly a lizard person who just hides inside a stolen human skin all day, secretly plotting to take over the world. However, I don't have the right to lock you in a cage and shout at you until you "show your true form". My delusional beliefs don't give me the right to restrict your freedom, just like Trumpublican's anti-science beliefs don't give them the right to restrict transgendered people's freedoms.

Man rapes 12 year old girl. Cops arrive to arrest him. 'But officers, I could not have done it. I identify as female!' Cop, upon visually confirming the man's sexual organs: You're a male. Rapist. 'See, you are intolerant too! Just because I have this does not mean I did it! I told you, I identify as female! I will have you charged with a hate crime! The intolerant little girl too!'

Thank you for that picture-perfect demonstration of exactly how little most people on the right understand of what it means to be transgender. Though I am a little shocked at how utterly incompetent you portrayed the LEO in your scenario. I thought the far-righters were supposed to support the police?

Here's a pro-tip: sexually assaulting people in restrooms is already illegal, harassing transgender people won't make that change.
