silencing any opposition opinions

There is absolutely no evidence that social media companies are "silencing" conservative voices.

Rather, far right nationalist and populist movements have flourished with the help of social media. These movements rely on outrage and grievance clickbait, which are also what drive social media platforms. The crazier the content, the more clicks and views it gets.

Trump was booted off Twitter because his violations of the terms of agreement became more and more egregious, not because his ideas were "conservative". If Twitter was really that much into censoring Trump's wisdom, it would have done so four years earlier.

You may also want to ask yourself why right wing pundits like Ben Shapiro dominate political content on Facebook. Right wing "news" outlets like The Daily Wire, The Blaze, Breitbart News, and The Western Journal consistently get more social media engagement than The NY Times, the WaPo, or CNN. Doesn't sound like a conspiracy to silence conservatives to me.

Aside from ideologies, one argument for throwing Trump off was that he was repeatedly posting demonstrable lies on the platform.

Duly noted, then that means AOC, the Squad and Pelosi and a large sum of the Democrat party should be banned as well.

He was eventually thrown off for spreading lies about mass election fraud resulting in a riot.

There were a lot of lies coming from Pelosi and one where she said that Trump was getting ready to attack and bomb China. Thankfully Gen. Milley set the record straight on that.

Would you agree that Twitter should have the right to throw off people spreading demonstrable lies?

I already answered that, but if they are going to punish political opponents for radical political beliefs they themselves hold, at least be consistent, don’t target exclusively just one political group. Either hold everyone to the same standard or not at all.

I agree there is a bias on that platform, but argue the principle here. I think there is a defensible case for throwing people off, left or right, for doing this.*

Sure, but again, be equally consistent. Booting Trump and keeping on the Ayatollah or Pelosi is just politically so dishonest and disingenuous.

Yes, they are a private company and they can allow anyone they want on their platform but to insinuate that Twitter isn’t political or that it follows a fair site for the public is a complete farce.

It’s a fair point. Should dangerous Islamists be allowed a platform?

Aside from ideologies, one argument for throwing Trump off was that he was repeatedly posting demonstrable lies on the platform. I mentioned the dodgy videos from a UK-based racist organization which earned him a rebuke from the then UK PM for giving this trash publicity. He also targeted individuals with lies - telling his supporters to watch a non-existent sex tape of a woman he was having a cat fight with.

He was eventually thrown off for spreading lies about mass election fraud resulting in a riot.

Would you agree that Twitter should have the right to throw off people spreading demonstrable lies? I agree there is a bias on that platform, but argue the principle here. I think there is a defensible case for throwing people off, left or right, for doing this.

Trump should hire his own software engineers (he's a billionaire....he can do it)

um, have you ever seen Donald Trump? He doesn’t pay anyone for anything. That’s why no reputable attorney will represent him. I’m the words of one white-shoe lawyer “He doesn’t listen and doesn’t pay.”

And is he really a billionaire? Where is the objective evidence?

Mote likely his net worth is in the low hundreds of millions and he is very illiquid. He doesn’t have nor can he borrow the money necessary to start his own platform.

And not for nothing, building a platform is hard work and he’s as lazy as the day is long.

I’ll just say this. Twitter will allow the most radical leftist and even terrorists like the Taliban and Iranian leaders to have a an account, but conservatives or the former President, no. Shows exactly where their loyalties rest and it’s not with American democracy for sure. Yes, they are a private company and they can allow anyone they want on their platform but to insinuate that Twitter isn’t political or that it follows a fair site for the public is a complete farce. They should just admit that they are a political leftist outfit and they won’t tolerate opposing viewpoints and I absolutely wouldn’t have a problem with them, but given their track record when it comes to silencing any opposition opinions especially pertaining to liberal agendas concerning Democrats or this administration is deeply alarming. Can’t wait until 2022 and hopefully the GOP will finally start to break up this infestation of media big tech big brother Orwellian bullying. Section 230 can’t come soon enough.

Trump’s Twitter account was a toilet of stupidity, lies and trash.

Twitter should have suspended him on a few occasions - most notably when he retweeted dodgy videos from a known racist organization.

If they’d slapped him into line earlier on, it might have improved his conduct.

Liberals scared to death that people will be able to easily hear what Trump has to say.

Twitter too busy deleting all the videos of the weekly “F Joe Biden” chants at sports events.

Regardless of your political point of view, speech - especially political speech - should never be infringed.

It's not about POV, it's about truths vs blatant lies of which Trump, the GOP and conservatives live off of. The fact Trump lies is not about political POV. If the conservatives want POV talk, that's one thing. Just lying and spreading disinformation and thinking that's OK is another.

The failure to address the concerns of citizens through dialogue instead shutting them up is a loser for a healthy society. It’s the sign of a fragile political system if the solution to disagreement with the dominant view is censorship. The counter-culture of today is on the Right.

The concerns of citizens should want to find truthful information...all of it, with an open mind...without narrative to critical think. Cherry picking certain 'facts' and having them used only when convenient to support lies and disinformation means the Right is wrong.

The case is about coercion.

Coercion? It's not. LOL.

What you defenders of Trump don't, can't, and never acknowledge is he lies and spreads disinformation.

Lying as often as Trump does and spreading them is a danger that is not about freedom of speech. Twitter suspending his account is akin to a constant time out for a kindergartner lying ubiquitously.

Violate the terms of service agreement and then demand them to re-instate it due to your own actions? This fool is so full of himself. But that is what a narcissist does.

4 ( +5 / -1 )

And this is what the once "business friendly" and "limited government" Repubs have become....

Have big government force a private business to re-admit you even when you violated the terms of service you agreed to when you joined...

Of course, if you want to go to Trump's Westchester golf club, you better meet his dress code if you want to enter...

Trump National Golf Club does not allow jeans, tee shirts, tank tops, swimwear, cut-offs, warm-up suits, sweatpants, or athletic shorts while using golf or dining facilities.

I think Hunter Biden should go wearing a "Stop the Big Lie" sweatshirt and if they turn him away, sue them for all their worth...

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Trump should build his own social media platform and put it on the freedom phone. It's a private business and they can do anything they want. They can kick out who they want. But personally I don't use stupid social media anyway. Who in their right mind takes that garbage seriously? Trump should hire his own software engineers (he's a billionaire....he can do it) and use the free open source tools (same tools Twitter and FB uses). What's the problem? Install some servers....there you go.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

I don't know why anyone needs Twitter anyway, but good for Trump. Twitter, Facebook, Google... they can't win against the millions of followers Trump has. The case is about coercion. We'll see what that turns up.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Regardless of your political point of view, speech - especially political speech - should never be infringed.

It isn’t. But if you want to enter my house, stand on my dining table and tell me about your political beliefs you can’t. You’ll be removed and not allowed in again.

Same principle with Twitter. Why is it so hard for some people to be consistent in supporting private business?

The last guys supporters got all huffy, took their ball home and vowed to start their own league. Didn’t happen so, guess who’s crawling back.

Regardless of your political point of view, speech - especially political speech - should never be infringed. The Big Brother routine that is happening in America today is a devastating blow to the chances of establishing a stable society composed of the multitudes of different peoples that live in modern day America. The failure to address the concerns of citizens through dialogue instead shutting them up is a loser for a healthy society. It’s the sign of a fragile political system if the solution to disagreement with the dominant view is censorship. The counter-culture of today is on the Right.

You mean trump hasn’t built his great big and beautiful social media platform yet?

Trump whining again

Does he ever stop?

9 ( +10 / -1 )

wasting money on frivolous lawsuits

it isn’t wasting money if you’re not paying your lawyers

6 ( +8 / -2 )

Shouldn’t he be focused on paying his debts rather than wasting money on frivolous lawsuits?

10 ( +12 / -2 )

The man doesn’t have the moral mask on, Twitter is within its rights to deny him service!!!

Donald Trump has asked a federal judge in Florida to force Twitter to restore his account

Trump will lose again.

It's so simple. As a company, Twitter has the right to block him.

Another silly lawsuit to keep himself in the news.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

In July, Trump filed lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida against all three tech companies and their CEOs, claiming that he and other conservatives have been wrongfully censored. The motion for a preliminary injunction was filed as part of Trump's case against Twitter

This is the same guy, who as president, blocked people on Twitter who were critical of him. What a clown.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

He'd be better off begging than suing.

Not being in the news for all the stupid craps he says and all the lies must be killing him inside.

(Smile)

13 ( +14 / -1 )

What a loser - suing Twitter to be able to post. Twitter is only for losers.

14 ( +15 / -1 )

Bit needy, isn’t it? I thought he was making his own ‘platform’. What happened to Frank?
