The issue with guys like Carson and other GOP politicians is their adherence to rigid ideology, even in situations that require some nuance or flexibility. They are the kinds of people with no outreach and no bridges to minority communities, so they end up spouting ideology from a thousand miles away.

Trump shouldn't, he should let the new AG do it, pull himself away from it, focus on getting the economy going, appoint a new Supreme Court judge and overturn every or most of Obama's executive orders. The 19th Amendment gave American women the right to vote.

The 24th Amendment banned poll taxes and land ownership requirements that some states used to disenfranchise minority and poor voters.

Those are some pretty significant changes.

Politicians can try to do all the things they promised, but some of them just can't happen. Obama said he would close Gitmo but the GOP blocked him. That's different than Obama coming out and saying he changed his mind a week after being elected.

Democrats need to work with Trump on issues that are important to us. He wants to spend money on a stimulus package and I support that. The establishment GOP will come out against it because of rigid ideology. I'm guessing that some of the blue collar workers they just picked up would benefit from the package, so the GOP will have to justify it to them.

What worries me about Trump will be the moments when he is sitting down talking to another leader. At some point he has to put in the work to learn about the issues and make informed decisions. If other leaders look at him and think he's out of his depth or just don't trust him or put confidence in him, then our influence will collapse.

Attention to my comment above shows that I do not believe Trump is any more racist than a typical 70-year old (that is, more than young people today, but not crazy-racist). He has, however, expanded in a very disturbing way the Overton Window - the acceptable parameters of political discourse. What would have been outrageous and disqualifying in the previous election cycle is now the new norm - and my fear is that this momentum will continue. Slavery will not return, women will still be allowed to vote - but policing policies targeting minority groups and elimination of women's reproductive rights are likely.

As someone who's claimed in previous posts to have an understanding of marketing you're no doubt fully aware of the basic statistical premise that in any large population outliers and anomalies are bound to occur. Appointing a non-majority person to any position does not mean that person (perhaps an outlier?) cares fig one about issues concerning the non-majority.

However, it's early days and anything can happen. My hope is the appointees - and the administration - will show their concern for the entire population, not just the establishment and those in the majority.

It's pretty clear that Trump has absolutely no understanding of what's involved in foreign affairs. He doesn't trust or believe "the generals". He doesn't believe his intelligence briefings. And now he wants to put an amateur in charge of our UN delegation, while sending his trust-fund son-in-law over to the Middle East to bring about peace.
