Obama dropped the unemployment rate from 7.8% to 4.8% and the stock market went from 7,950 to 20,000. Very hard for any president to match those numbers, but granted he took over after a GOP administration that oversaw the financial collapse and it took a lot of deficit spending to replace the spending lost. I think we can all agree that we're hoping another GOP meltdown doesn't happen again.

Obama's gains were with private sector jobs. Public sector jobs declined.

So results of the last month of Obama's administration was par for his second term: adequate employment growth (nothing spectacular) and tepid but real wage gains. Nothing surprising there.

Except that Trump has claimed it as his own, abandoning his "hoax" mantra as quickly as he had his birtherism infatuation as soon as it became politically unpalatable. Mah, most politicians like to shine the apple on the side they'll bite - but this is now a benchmark for Trump. We'll see if his "policies" (for lack of a better word - impulses?) continue Obama's trend of incremental, steady gains.

Trump sounds more and more like the new football coach appointed mid-season who claim the first few wins as his despite only a couple of training sessions under his belt (the so called 'shock-effect'), conveniently forgetting all the hard work done by his predecessor.

"...we're hoping another GOP meltdown doesn't happen again."

I hoping it does. A meltdown may be the only thing that gets that buffoon kicked out of the White House. Obama was elected largely due to Bush's economic incompetence and then re-elected thanks to the strong Obama-Bernanke recovery.

Trump clearly inherited this from Obama. Now, Trump wants to deregulate Wall Street (the things that were placed to prevent another financial crisis). I wonder what kind of mess the next President will inherit.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

@bass Don't worry, Trump is will outdo those numbers with real jobs, particularly in the private sector where it really counts.

Has an over/under line been set yet for how many 'real jobs' Trump will personally create? Knowing Trump and Bannon and their penchant for alt facts, I've got to assume their jobs-created report will show one BILLION new jobs in the private sector, each paying CEO-level wages. And each new job recipient will get the same privileges Trump has and will NOT have to pay taxes. Greatness ahead!

"Trump is working hard on getting the borders closed because if anyone is not paying taxes, it's the illegals that live and work in the states"

Stunning. Absolutely stunning.

Trump bragging about avoiding taxes - clever.

Other people avoiding paying taxes - unacceptable.

The mad world of the lunatic fringe.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

But now they don't complain that most of the jobs are part time jobs flipping burgers. Like under Obama.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

If Trump keeps up his lame prayer-feud with his TV show employee Ahnold Shwa-chan, then I can predict there will be a job opening as host of The Apprentice. But that isn't exactly a growth industry.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The Obama unemployment rate isn't entirely accurate. The 7.8% rate was when he took office and the economy was still shedding hundreds of thousands of jobs as a result of the GOP meltdown. After he became President it peaked at about 10%, then Obama dropped it to 4.8%. Romney, another Republican, campaigned on getting the unemployment rate to 6%. You really have to go back to Reagan before you find meaningful job growth under Republican leadership, and Reagan would be shunned by today's GOP.

Now compare that with what right wingers imagine the economy to be under Republican control. Night and day difference, and we can thank the bubble and hardwired stereotypes for that.

Obama's net job growth includes a negative number of public sector jobs so it drags his total jobs created down since all of the gains were in the private sector. Bush's public sector numbers were the exact opposite with large increases in public sector jobs. Ask any Republican and he will say the exact opposite, that Obama grew government jobs (because that's what Democrats do) and Bush lowered them (because that's what Republicans do).

Then there's Kansas...where they elected a Tea Party extremist who promised to slash taxes which would cause growth which would increase tax revenues. Except the exact opposite happened. Tax revenue collapsed and job growth was well below average. Exactly as everyone who isn't a Republican said would happen, and now they sweep it under the rug. I've never met a Republican who has even attempted to defend it.

Did you know that "trickle down economics" doesn't exist in any economics book? It's a theory entirely made up by Republican politicians. Give more to the rich and it will eventually trickle down to everyone else. Lord only knows how many tax dollars we've lost and how much we've accelerated the wealth gap under that fantasy. Oh well.

The sad thing is that the GOP base still falls for this stuff. Some will be along soon to just say the opposite of what I'm saying with no supporting evidence. Just things they know to be true in their heart of hearts.

Ahhh, so that's why Trump won Wisconsin, Michigan, Kansas and middle America, it was because Obama was so aggressive in creating jobs in the private sector for this misguided people. ROFL

Trump campaigned under a whole lot of emotional topics - how do you know these guys didn't ignore the logic and fall for his emotion?

Trump on jobs report: 'It's going to continue, big league'

Wow, a word of three syllables!

But now they don't complain that most of the jobs are part time jobs flipping burgers. Like under Obama.

All those right wing counter arguments will now disappear.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Also, cutting taxes aggressively and NOT paying taxes are two entirely different things.

What, on opposites sides of the social responsibility fence?

Trump is working hard on getting the borders closed because if anyone is not paying taxes, it's the illegals that live and work in the states

and the Donald Trumps of this word.

Let's forget for a moment that Trump is taking credit for a January job report that's 2/3rds under Obama

And let's remember what Trump said about US job reports in the past:

August 2015: “We have a real unemployment rate that’s probably 21%. It’s not 6. It’s not 5.2 and 5.5. Our real unemployment rate–in fact, I saw a chart the other day, our real unemployment–because you have 90 million people that aren’t working, 93 million to be exact. If you start adding it up, our real unemployment rate is 42%.”

Heheheh, wonder what he will say about the real unemployment right now? lol

(Trump during the campaign frequently criticized the official jobless rate—known as the U-3—as an overly narrow measure of labor-market health. The Labor Department publishes several alternative measures each month. The broadest, known as the U-6, includes discouraged job-seekers who have stopped looking for work, others who are marginally attached to the labor force and people stuck in part-time jobs because they can’t find full-time positions. The U-6 was 9.2% in December, well above the U-3 reading of 4.7% but still in the single digits.

Trump was right that many millions of Americans did not have jobs and were not counted as unemployed. But for most, that’s because they were not actively looking for work—such as retirees, stay-at-home parents or teenagers in high school. The number of people outside the labor force in August 2015 was 94 million. It was 95.1 million as of December 2016. And the figure should continue to rise as the U.S. population grows and ages.

That means that number will continue to rise throughout Trump's term in office. Would he ever mention that 90-plus million again? What if somebody else uses that number against him? What if it hits 100 million, when it inevitably will?)

we tried to do the socialist model of income redistribution for 8 years

Please elaborate in detail. How you and your rightists concoct these baloney tropes is really beyond belief. Tax rates near historic lows.

the evidence for that is Trump, that is what we know that is true in our hearts

= Our instincts tell us to believe Trump. Ergo, Obama was a socialist and a failure.

I see nothing irrational in that whatsoever. Thank God for civilization.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

Like I said...someone will be along soon to say the opposite of what I said with no supporting evidence.

Cutting taxes works....when you go from 79% to 34%. But not when you drop state taxes from 1.8% to 0%. People just pocket the difference and the budget falls short of expectations. They create a hole in the budget that has to be addressed, but naturally Republicans don't look at their tax cuts.

First they start to raid the social services, and that starts with vilifying the services and those who use them. We get stories of fraud and wasteful spending. That's why the GOP passes stupid laws like banning welfare recipients from using their dollars on cruises...in states that have no cruise lines. Or drug testing recipients which is expensive and catches so few people that it's a net loss. But the image of the drug using, cruise taking welfare recipient is burned into conservative's minds as the typical user. Makes it easier to cut services that way.

Along with that they raid education since there's just too much money there to let it be. Next you can increase consumption taxes on the working class. Add in a healthy dose of xenophobia and stories of illegals gaming the system, and you can start to cut even more services. Stories about Planned Parenthood selling fetuses with a straight up hit job by Republicans looking to stop funding it. Those dollars can be used elsewhere, like more tax cuts for the rich.

When their plans utterly fail the next right wing dipshit goes after him in the primaries and says the plan didn't work because they guy in charge just isn't a true conservative. We need to go further to the right and be really really really really conservative. He gets into office and the process repeats itself with even more counterproductive policies.

I guess we'll have to point it out over and over and over again ad nauseum.

You know, taking a page from someone else's playbook.

Impeachment is inevitable so let's stop wasting time and get the process started.

"I see. Well, we tried to do the socialist model of income redistribution for 8 years and that failed miserably, the evidence for that is Trump, that is what we know that is true in our hearts."

You admire a man who was smart enough to avoid paying taxes. His money wasn't redistributed to layabouts.

Surely people stupid enough to pay taxes deserve to have their money given to scroungers. I hope your accountant isn't inept.

Most Republicans I've met subscribe to the "if it's on your watch you own it" philosophy, so I was speaking to them. If you go against the grain and look deeper into the issues, even when it exonerates Democrats, then I'd be happy to have this conversation with you. But for now I'm skeptical.

Curious but if the Democrats had been in office during those 8 years, heck just from 2005-2009, what would they have done differently? Can you name the campaign warnings in the 2004 presidential election about the housing market collapse from either candidate?

Did you know that "trickle down economics" doesn't exist in any economics book? It's a theory entirely made up by Republican politicians. That is one form of trickle down economics, another is public spending campaigns like on infrastructure

So in other words the Democrats probably would not have done any thing differently during those years, correct?

Sorry, we don't have a crystal ball.

Knowing Trump and Bannon and their penchant for alt facts, I've got to assume their jobs-created report will show one BILLION new jobs in the private sector, each paying CEO-level wages.

No, because they know how bad it looks to fidge on the job reports and know that the press would love nothing more than to get them on juggling the numbers, remember, they don't like Trump, so you don't need to worry about that.

And each new job recipient will get the same privileges Trump has and will NOT have to pay taxes. Greatness ahead!

Hmmm....under Obama everyone was squeezed for tax, that's why you have Trump in office. Also, cutting taxes aggressively and NOT paying taxes are two entirely different things. Actually, I think they were right in following their logic, but judging by the damage the left is doing in cities like Berkley and New York, I would say, allowing their emotions to take over is not going to serve them or their causes at all.
