No corroboration for any of the accusations but several witnesses saying they didn’t happen. I would say Kavanaugh is fine as long as Republicans hold firm.
Chip Star
At least Trump is open to the idea that Kavanaugh is a sexual predator, unlike the vast majority of Trump supporters.
Wouldn't it be great if these threads were filled with people engaged in mature critical discourse instead of the usual denial of facts and hyperbolic statements?
katsu78
It's now been what, 5 days of me asking, and not a single Kavanaugh defender has had the courage to answer:
Why can't we slow down and investigate him properly? Why this rush to cram his confirmation down Americans' throats?
Trump and his Republicans really screwed themselves over this. The harder they hold to this "We have to get him confirmed right now!" line, the harder it is going to be to save face when they eventually have to pull his nomination because he's too compromised.
PTownsend
Kavanaugh is 'fine' only in the minds of those who try to justify sexual assault and say things like '90% of my high school mates did worse things'.
The US isn't Russia where spousal battery has been decriminalized.
CrazyJoe
"And on Wednesday a new woman (Julie Swetnick) came forward with explosive allegations, saying she witnessed sexually abusive behavior by the Supreme Court nominee when he was a teenager and claiming she was gang-raped at a party he attended in the early 1980s."
https://edition.cnn.com/2018/09/26/politics/who-is-julie-swetnick/index.html
Keep in mind that as a holder of security clearances and the owner of a company that works with the federal government, lying in a sworn affidavit would not only end her career but ruin her company and put employees out of work.
She has no reason to lie.
bass4funk
I read those allegations and they don’t seem earth shattering at all, more he said, she said, conjecture.
She said.....and we can prove this based on.......
SuperLib
He should be removed. Republicans have plenty of time to ram through a replacement before the midterms.
arrestpaul
Maybe she's still upset by Hillary's 2nd failed attempt to become POTUS? Maybe she just wants to a part of the Democrat Party's resist party. Maybe she simply wants to delay anything, and everything, the Republican attempt to do.
arrestpaul
Just because you don't like the answer doesn't mean the question hasn't been answered. Maybe if you asked the same question just one more time?
Serrano
"Why can't we slow down and investigate him properly? Why this rush to cram his confirmation down Americans' throats?"
How long would that take? A year? 2 years? Here's another question? Why weren't these accusations made at the beginning of the nomination process?
"He should be removed. Republicans have plenty of time to ram through a replacement before the midterms."
The Democrats would hate the replacement even more and no doubt come up with accusers of dastardly deeds for the replacement.
SuperLib
Obviously the Democrats aren’t paying people to pretend they were molested or manufacturing evidence.
sunfunbun
sunfunbun
Or true statements from you Trump: 'women like being grabbed by the p___y' also impacts your opinion because it shows misogynistic predatory words on your behalf making you not a trusted opinion on sexual misconduct.
>
Strangerland
This is a politically correct statement by Trump. He is addressing the situation, while committing to nothing, and he can always explain away his lack of removal of the nomination with a claim of not having yet found the evidence against Kavanaugh convincing.
Basically an empty statement. It's an appeasement. Trying to keep everyone happy.
bass4funk
And the idiots on the left will try to dig and find something on that nominee. No, the GOP and Senate should hear these women’s claims and at the same time, the Republicans should move forward to start confirming this Friday, they did more than enough, now its enough. But thank God, Kavanaugh won’t budge.

This is called a "walk-back" - it's when politicians realize all those "fully support" statements they made previously may not work.
Says the guy on tape admitting he "grabs 'em by the ____", has affairs with porn stars, and walks in on beauty pageant dressing rooms...
Donald Trump discussing sexual harassment is the same as Vladimir Putin discussing free elections...
Strangerland
Why not. You guys have shown in the past you're fine with the seat sitting vacant for a year.
Political posturing of course, payback for the whole Garland incident.
Unfortunately for you guys, that doesn't logically mean the accusations are false. Just that regardless of their truth or lack thereof, their existence alone made them politically beneficial to the Democrats. Their truth still needs to be determined regardless of that benefit.
stormcrow
Imagine what would happen if Kavanaugh is confirmed to the Supreme Court and then it's later proven that Kavanaugh participated on a rape-train when he was a younger man. If there's a grain of truth to this new allegation, better that the FBI finds out about it now than CNN or some other news organization finding evidence when Kavanaugh's a U.S. Supreme Court justice. And it it is true and Kavanaugh's confirmed before the facts are investigated, well, the truth will eventually come out. Then what?! Are we going to switch a Supreme Court justice's black robe for an orange jumpsuit?
Strangerland
As should be done with all candidates for the Supreme Court, by any and all parties. Only those without skeletons in their closet should be admitted to the court.
As we can see, Bass doesn't care what the questioning may dig up, he thinks they need to confirm Kavanaugh regardless of what he or she or anyone else says.
ulysses
Jim Acosta asked Trump why he always sides with the accused in such cases.
Is it because Trump himself has allegations against him.
Now that's a man who says what others just think!!
Pukey2
Sure. I'll believe it when I see it. This person in the white house would get on with Roy Moore and Kavanaugh like a house on fire.
bass4funk
That’s what she said, ok....and?
Oh, interesting, let’s see them prove that beyond a shadow of a doubt, good luck and then the vote begins.
Allegedly.
But the difference with Trump is, everyone knew he liked women, so nothing big....
Strangerland
They don't need to prove beyond a shadow of a doubt he is guilty, as this is not a trial of innocence or guilt. This is a question of whether or not Kavanaugh is perceived to be appropriate to be appointed to the SCOTUS. This will come down to whether or not enough of the public believe the allegations, that the Republicans feel appointing him to the court would be too detrimental to their re-election campaigns to be able to do so. It's not an innocence/guilt thing, as there is no talk of restricting his freedoms, it is a confidence/no confidence thing, as the question is whether or not to give him special privileges. The bar for giving someone something and the bar for taking something away are not set at the same positions.
bass4funk
What I meant was in the court of public opinion.
But we shall see in a few hours if the allegations have merit or not and if the GOP will commit to moving forward with the nomination voting tomorrow.
Wolfpack
What facts? We got a lot of assertions and hazy memories of what allegedly happened 30+ years ago. Presumption of innocence and due process. Bill Clinton insisted on it when he got into trouble.
lincolnman
Explain how "allegedly" equals "caught on tape"...
Uh, I think what you're saying here is since Trump likes women, it's OK for him to sexually harass them - "nothing big", right? If so, that statement should be known to every women in America so they can process that as they vote in Nov.
Blacklabel
Early retirement, a million dollar book deal, lifetime status as a hero of the “resistance”. Sure, no reason to lie. What legitimate accuser of sound mind would think “I really gotta call Avenatti”?
Blacklabel
The newest accuser was in her 2nd or 3rd year of college hanging out at high school parties? The age and years it supposedly happened doesn’t match. No year puts her and then in high school or college at the same time.
Strangerland
Doesn't change anything I said, still no need to prove beyond the shadow of a doubt:
bass4funk
Talking about Kavanaugh
Can you stop obsessing about Trump and talk about Kavanaugh, just please try.
Blacklabel
Oh I see now. 10 years ago the Avenatti accuser filed a sexual harassment suit against her company. Guess which firm she used? The law firm of Katz, Marshall and Banks.
Yep, that Katz. ford’s lawyer for those of you not paying attention. So she was passed to Avenatti to make it look like a different category of accuser.
The accuser also has recent federal tax problems that have been paid off this year. So she definitely has financial incentive here.
Blacklabel
Wow, now someone in Colorado by anonymous letter. Someone else supposedly on a boat in Rhode Island in ‘85 who already admitted making it up. Everybody looking for some money and fame.
Chip Star
It's hilarious how Trump supporters see conspiracy theories everywhere. Even if there is an investigation, which there absolutely should be, Trump supporters would create some ridiculous conspiracy theory that the investigators are bias/corrupt.
When something doesn't go our way, create a conspiracy theory in an attempt to explain why it didn't go our way. When something goes our way, the process was sound and unquestionable.
Strangerland
Good job. You've logically proven how it's impossible she could have been raped.
...you did that, right?
CrazyJoe
Before this disgrace entered the White House, if a President had ever given a press conference like this, the reporting and analysis would have focused heavily on his mental stability, possibly his mental deterioration due to age and stress or even the level of his sanity.
Instead, since it's Trump, it's viewed as just a prime example of who he is. Just a better, clearer view of what every day is like with him in charge.
We are so screwed.
plasticmonkey
You make it sound so easy and attractive. Maybe you ought to try it yourself sometime. I mean, who would want a respectable career as a psychology professor when they could cash in by making up a story about a sexual assault?
The accuser has far less incentive to lie than Bart O'Kavanaugh does.
bass4funk
Really? The seems to be doing a good job on their own by spreading false accusations, lapping up whether they be warranted or not or any negative gossip that shoots their way.
First the left wanted 11 white men to question Ford, then they complain about the optics of it, like these old men are beating up on this woman, they the GOP ask for a top sex prosecutor to ask Ford then they complain about that, they complain about everything, even the color of the sun or the angle the tide rolls in, cut, but getting boring.
....do everything you can to derail a nominee and by golly, the Dems are doing that, but what I really like is how the polls are really tightening up right now, whereas if you weeks ago Democrats had a strong leader head of the GOP, but now that gap has shrunk almost within the margin of error and that’s not good for the Democrats, but keep up the drama and fiasco, the Dems May be the GOPs ticket to possibly retaining the House.
Chip Star
All of Kavanaugh's supporters have incentives to lie. Who wouldn't want to be the subject of death threats and have their names dragged through the mud by rabid conservative nutjobs?
Kavanaugh, however, has zero reason to lie. It's not as if he's been nominated for one of the most important governmental position where he can affect the laws of the land for years and years to come.
Oh, wait . . . that's exactly what he's been nominated for. It appears as if Kavanaugh has far more incentive to lie than his multiple accusers.
Chip Star
The only way to know if an accusation is false is to actually investigate it.
It is not the fault of the left that the entire Judiciary Committee is made up of white men. The right complains every time the media reports on Trump's actions and words.
plasticmonkey
Yes. Beto O'Roark is now neck and neck with Ted Cruz.
I predict the Senate will confirm Bart O'Kavanaugh. The Koch's and the Mercer's and the other big donors are watching. America must return to that original utopia where those with the most money have the loudest voice. It's in the Constitution! All animals are equal, but some are more equal than others.
And then the GOP is going to get shredded in November, as they should be.
Lizz
As should be done with all candidates for the Supreme Court, by any and all parties. Only those without skeletons in their closet should be admitted to the court.
And digging up sexual misconduct charges is a ruse that doesn't work more than once. The ones that are truly hurt are the women this happened to whose accusations are not going to carry the same weight.
stormcrow
"I'm asking you why in this process that has been so debased, on both sides, why are people who have these serious allegations not going to law enforcement themselves and saying, "Take a look at this".
(Beth Wilkinson, Attorney for Brett Kavanaugh)
Excellent question, Ms. Wilkinson! All the more reason for Kavanaugh himself and president Trump to demand an FBI investigation.
But they won't, will they? Why not?
bass4funk
Really, from the looks of it, the lefts feeble attempt to derail the process seems to be falling apart, guess the creepy porn lawyer shouldn’t have gotten involved, but he just can’t help himself this guy.
I pray it so.
Based on what? Ahhhh.....more salacious fabricated which are becoming more evident with each passing day
lincolnman
My post was about Trump - so explain to me again how "allegedly" equates to "caught on tape"...
Nope, you ain't dodging this one - explain your statement above again so all the female readers here can understand it - that's its "no big deal"....
lincolnman
Sorry, you can't use the phrase "creepy porn lawyer" until you answer my question. Avanati is the lawyer for Stormy Daniels - a porn star Trump had an affair with, lied about having it, then lied about covering it up - and at the time his son was 4 months old. So who is "creepy" here. Hint - Melania knows...
Female sexual assault victims - more proof that Republicans think you're nothing but salacious liars...remember in Nov....
Chip Star
Someone's speculating that the multiple accusers of Kavanaugh are some how the left's attemp to derail the process. Nobody is trying to derail the process, which is what republicans did with Garland. People are trying to use the process to determine if the nominee is fit for office.
The creepy porn lawyer . . . Ad hominem attacks are a weak argumentative strategy.
I explained why Kavanaugh had far more incentive to lie in my previous post. Other people's reading comprehension issues are not my problem.
bass4funk
https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/congress-generic-ballot-polls/
I’m not so sure now. With the exception of Morning Consult and Harris Interactive the GOP is just within striking distance of the Democrats, that’s good news, earlier this year I was very nervous but now that gap is closing, thanks to the delirious shenanigans they’re making it easier for the GOP to catch up.
Chip Star
Love how people that disparage polls that go against them cite polls that are for them.
Chip Star
The only way to determine the veracity of the accusation is an investigation.
As a poster said eslwhere:
bass4funk
I know, doesn’t the thread talk about Kavanaugh? We already know some of the alleged things Trump could have said, so what?
I’m not trying to dodge and as I said, i want to hear Ford’s side even if it has more holes than Swiss cheese.
But since the creepy porn lawyer is now representing this 3rd victim who’s accounts of that time are all over the place with inconsistencies, once I saw his greedy mitts were involved in this, I said, here we go, the lefts circus clown has just stumbled in....again.
As how the left think Kavanaugh is a sexual predator and they’ll do it without due process.
bass4funk
I understand how you feel, that’s the reason why I took and accumulative poll, so we can get a clearer more precise picture.
Chip Star
Why are you so sensitive to being off topic now? You've never worry about it when you do it. There's that double standard.
If this were remotely true, you wouldn't be disparaging her now.
In your world, comservatibes being greedy is a good thing, but not anyone else. Another example of a double standard.
The circus-clown-in-chief has been involved in this Kavanaugh thing since he appointed Kavanaugh.
Due process requires an investigation, which you are vehemently against when it's one of your people. Double standard.
Chip Star
Polls aren't accurate! Polls aren't accurate! Well, cumulative polls are accurate (when they make me feel good).
lincolnman
Read your reply above, and once again tell me how allegedly equates to "caught on tape" - stop dodging... Was it Bill Clinton in a Trump mask on the bus?
The issue is not about what you want to hear, the issue is you slandering all sexual assault victims by calling them salacious liars - again, don't dodge, explain.....
Once again, no explanation - who's more creepy, the lawyer or the adulterer with the 4 month old child cheating with a porn star?
Again with the left and due process - hypocrisy just doesn't resonate with you does it - "Lock Her Up"......
Ah_so
Now there are four complainents in total. Not looking good.

If these accusations are true, then Kavanaugh should lose more than the SCOTUS application. He should be taken off the bench entirely, and face criminal charges.
If.
The plural of "anecdote" isn't "evidence"
Funny though that Dr. Ford was actually in Maryland early in August for her polygraph test. A polygraph curiously taken at an airport hotel (in spite of her fear of flying). Didn't contact Senator Feinstein, wasn't contacted by anyone on the justice committee. Even though it was AFTER she sent her letter that started the whole thing rolling.
Blacklabel
No I didn’t prove she wasn’t . Unfortunately for you, you have to prove she was. I have several reasons why her claim is dubious. You wouldn’t even care about this story if it weren’t a Trump nominee anyway (hi Keith Ellison!)
countach
@serrano, why don't FBI conduct a full investigation before the hearing?
Strangerland
That wouldn’t likely happen. The bar for people to lose faith in Kavanaugh is much lower than for the bar to prove guilt in a court of law.
So you’re right, but it won’t realieically happen.
Attilathehungry
Countach; why should they? The FBI isn't some miracle group who can magically make the fog clear with their super sleuthy sleuthing. They generally investigate federal crimes. This isn't a federal crime. They also do background checks on prospective federal employees. As they did to Kavanaugh- six times.
The proper investigative group would be the local police where the alleged crime took place. These are state crimes that are being alleged. The Senators on both sides can also investigate, frankly I'd be shocked if they aren't at this point. The whole FBI card is a red herring.
Chip Star
At this point it is just Kavanaugh's (who has far more incentive to lie) word against his accuser's (who have little to no incentive to lie), so the above statement is absolutely inaccurate. Perhaps a bigot with a YouTube channel could provide some insight. Oh my.
Here we go again with the Ellison thing. Odd that Wllison's accused has no evidence beyond he assertions either but you guys have declared him guilty without a trial or an investigation. Can anyone say, "double standard"?
Chip Star
You know how to prove whether these women were assaulted by Kavanaugh? An investigation, which you guys are against because for some unknown reason you're in a rush to confirm Kavanaugh despite having been completely okay with an eight-member court for a year under Obama. It's spelled D.O.U.B.L.E. S.T.A.N.D.A.R.D.
Serrano
"@serrano, why don't FBI conduct a full investigation before the hearing?"
Um, because first, reports should be filed with the LOCAL POLICE, which hasn't happened yet.
Why are the four witnesses that Ford listed to collaborate her claims deny what she is claiming?
countach
Where's evidence that he's guilty when the U.S. law saids innocent until facts under court of law?
Strangerland
He’s not in a court of law, so what are you even talking about?
Madverts
Kavanagh is toast.
The longer the dinasours in the GOP cling to this man the more self-harm they do.
The third ladies allegations are the most shocking, and like doctor Ford, her credentials are impeccable.
countach
@Strangerland, his accuser has already passed a polygraph exam. Kavenaugh should submit to polygraph exam and FBI should be allowed time and authorization to investigate.
Serrano
" his accuser has already passed a polygraph exam"
Oh my...
Most psychologists agree that there is little evidence that polygraph tests can accurately detect lies
http://www.apa.org/research/action/polygraph.aspx
Gosh, if only one of the four witnesses she listed would support her claim... and if only Kavanaugh had been accused even once of any kind of sexual misconduct before now...
"Kavanaugh is toast"
That's what some people said about Clarence Thomas. We'll see, won't we.
Serrano
And as far as the 3rd accuser Julie Swetnick goes...
She was a college student who says she went to high school gang rape parties 10 times, but didn't tell law enforcement about the supposed gang rapes of underage girls, she witnessed with her adult eyes. Instead she waited until 2018 to tell CPL (Creepy Porn Lawyer) about them. Seems legit.
Attilathehungry
I'm also curious about that. Why did she attend the second gang rape party, after attending the first? It defies sensibility to think that is plausible. Why attend the third? The fourth? How could ten public gang rapes occur within a small community, and never come to anyone's attention? How could six FBI vettings not discover any shred of these horrific crimes?
katsu78
The thing that disturbs me about this dodge you and other Trump supporters have repeatedly tried to use is that it shows you fundamentally misunderstand the purpose of the exercise. The goal of a SCOTUS confirmation hearing is not to p0wn the libruls!!!lol!, it's to confirm that the judge being appointed to a lifetime position is fit for the job. In which case, it doesn't matter when an accusation is made, all that matters is that an accusation is made.
It is very disturbing that the people who support Trump may actually prefer to see their country undermined if it upsets people they hate, than see a qualified person get a job they've properly earned after a civil and thorough government investigation.
Serrano
Amazing how several Republicans are undecided on the question of Kavanaugh's guilt or innocence, and they'd like to hear more from Christine Ford, but there's not one Democrat who remains undecided, every one of them plans to vote against Kavanaugh before hearing Ford's testimony. What's up with that?
Silvafan
@Serrano
So let's see, the gymnasts who waited years to come forward to accuse their doctor must have been lying. The boys who were raped by Sandusky also waited a long time to come forward. The Catholic boys who were abused by priests that waited decades to come forward must be lying because they hate the church? Why is it that you believe the other examples but don't believe or even give it a possibility that this may have happened? No facts? There is no investigation into it, there are no witnesses allowed to be called, no corroborating testimony. Makes it easy, just he said she said.
bass4funk
Given the new revelations that have been coming out of accusers, maybe these women are toast, it sure looks like it.

Who said that? Those cases are different from this con artist job.
"no witnesses allowed to be called"
None of Ford's witnesses will collaborate what she is claiming.
How about answering my question in my previous post?
Wolfpack
Are all men accused of sex crimes by women to be automatically believed or only if the accused is a conservative? Do we all agree now that Bill Clinton, accused by more women of more serious offenses than Kavanaugh, is a sexual predator? How does this work now?
Attilathehungry
A lot of people make the valid point that this is not a criminal case, so that the standards of proof are not the same. True. However, the presumption of innocence does NOT change. It is a fundamental human right, regardless of the circumstances or situation. Accusations must be accompanied by some level of evidence.
The plural of "anecdote" is not "evidence".
The plural of "feeling" is not "fact".
Wolfpack
You make the correct observation that the hearings are not a criminal trial. However witnesses are put under oath and may be prosecuted if they are not truthful. Now obviously many witnesses lie and are never prosecuted- James Clapper comes immediately to mind.
However it is a deeply held value in the West that people should not be harmed based on a false claim. That was the ideal that led Senator Joseph McCarthy to be found infamous by history for his frequent unfounded accusations. The current “believe the woman” movement is in many ways analogous to the “believe the anti-movement” of the 1950’s. Like McCarthy, the political Left of today is on the wrong side of history when they decided to ditch due process for a politically popular idea.
katsu78
Wow. Just wow. I have to slow clap this. It takes a rare actor to commit to the bit this fully even though everyone in the audience has seen through the act. Most people have too much of a sense of shame, or at least too much to do of an evening, to waste their time on such an obvious lie. But not this man. Nay! Of this man, they will say, "he stayed at his post! When all good sense and basic human decency said to stop, he kept going! When he found himself in a hole, he had the courage to shake his fist fist at the sky and declare, 'I shall dig even harder!'"
"A lot of people make the valid point that the thing I want to talk about is a complete distraction from the topic at hand. But the thing is, even though it's 100% irrelevant to the topic, it still exists!"
Serrano
Investigate the women, their bank accounts, emails, phone records. This whole thing is dirty and sullies a good man's name.

Kavanaugh’s Frat Boy Rape Posse had a motto: “No Means Yes, Yes Means Anal” …
Two. Julie Swetnick says she was drugged & gang raped in Kavanaugh’s presence; Her statement mentions Beach Week. Kavanaugh's calendar confirms he was at Beach Week.
Three. Kavanaugh was seriously in debt. Conservative big money donors have canceled that. He’s compromised & no choir boy.
Four. Ford wants to testify to the FBI; 'Blackout’ Brett is afraid to. Witness Mike Judge has fled and is also afraid to speak to the Bureau.
Chop Chop
I was surprised by those accusers did not go to the Police and School authority when they were gang raped, attempted rape and exposed by Brett Kavanaugh.
Why are they coming out now and accused Brett Kavanaugh as a serial sex offender?
I won't be surprised if other women coming out and accuse him with difference 30 or 40 years old sexual assault story. They want to stop Brett Kavanaugh getting the Supreme Court, Judgejob, but same time they are destroying this man and his family.
FBI must investigate on these accusers whether their allegations are true or false.
Ah_so
I don't know if they were more serious but I agree that Clinton was something of a pest. I expect he probably also benefited from the fact that these stories started coming out over 25 years ago when attitudes were slightly different.
None of this changes whether Kavanaugh is appropriate for this role..
Yes, it is amazing how long victims of sex crimes take to report them. Some never ever do.
Ah_so
She has made her testimony and has come across as very convincing - "credible" i's what everyone is saying. Not good for Kavanaugh.
Ah_so
His testimony was pretty good too.
Although you expect that of a highly skilled lawyer.

The reports are saying she came across as honest and sincere, even from Fox News.
