Putin has claimed that perhaps some Russian zealots might have been involved in some meddling and in some social media flaming, but they were just patriotic private citizens.

Saying thanks to Putin for the help would be giving someone else credit, so Trump would never do that. He's far too Trump-centric. In public he can't do that. It might lessen him in the eyes of some of his base. Behind closed doors, however, I assume he'll have to bend over to his master.
