It usually takes animosity/hatred, the means to harm (guns), and the trigger (pardon the pun) to start one of these mass murders. Unfortunately Trump peddles all three regularly, I honestly don't know how he's going to help without refusing NRA money, cancel his twitter account and stop relying on division for re-election.

Take some money from the huge over-bloated war and prison budgets and put that money into subsidizing mental health care facilities to the point that people will happily but their nutty family members in them.

All this talk about background checks and red flag laws completely ignores reality. The one and only way America can reduce gun crime is to reduce the overall number of guns and greatly limit their availability. Get rid of ALL semiautomatic firearms with removable magazines and a capacity of more than 6 rounds, require guns and ammunition to be stored in a secure facility and checked out for the purpose of hunting or target shooting. Then add in registration of all guns, universal background checks that require reporting of all sales, and require immediate reporting of theft or loss of a gun. In a mostly rural America that was trying to avoid having a standing army, the 2nd Amendment made sense. Today, it is an anachronism that needs to be repealed.

Wait for the flip-flop in a few days once NRA comes calling.

This man has no morals or a spine, he will do what it takes to cling to power even if that means his innocent countrymen get slaughtered on a weekly basis.

To all posters, Dump is selling those hats on his 2020 campaign website. Like the Dorian mess, this news conference is basically free product placement for item that he is selling!

He is not going to do anything because his base won't let him.

Yeh, the Constitution and 2nd amendment is just outdated and wrong, America. An upgrade mental health is going to lessen mass shootings? pffffft....I guess, if the mostly right wing crazies, millions of them, understand their craziness and the Republican party gets a lobotomy.

The love triangle between Trump, McConnel and the NRA is strong.

Nothing's gonna change this problem except by the people marching on Washington D.C. from the outside in, not the inside out.

It's too bad the general populace in the U.S. doesn't have as much passion to protest this social problem as the Hong Kongers do.

Red Flag laws are unconstitutional “prior restraint” laws that violate our basic civil rights.

What the gun grabbers don't/can't comprehend is that to take away a person's Second Amendment rights also violates the protections guaranteed in the Fourth, Fifth, and Sixth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution; all predicated on an unnamed source (example: ex-boyfriend, girlfriend, a disgruntled neighbor, etc.) who's secret allegation that someone else “might” do something dangerous to themselves or others at some point in the near or distant future.

And in two minutes he'll get a call from the NRA and change his mind, like the fool he is. Did you watch his interview on this, "It could have been worse," the man said. Could have been worse. Unbelievable. A 17-month old girl had all her teeth knocked out and has schrapnel in her chest, and 8 died, but hey, just another day in 'Merka.

Texas: "Red Flag laws are unconstitutional “prior restraint” laws that violate our basic civil rights."

Good that you support the death of police officers. Wasn't it three wounded/killed today so far? Or, should I say, for you, ONLY three?

Joke for April fools!

So, nothing will change. See ya at the next shooting thread.

Blah, blah, blah. And more blah. Don't mean a thing.

Ok, so in other words he shouldn’t work with Congress? Which is it now?

You didn't do much after Dayton and El Paso, Pres Trump, except cave in to the NRA.

Yes and every Democrat President would have done the same, so at this point there needs to be another way how to tackle this.

People judge you on what you actually do, not whay you say you're going to do.

That goes both ways.

Sadly, seems like the motive was, the man was mentally unstable.

Trump is a traitor, a Russian puppet and a stooge for the NRA terrorist cult. Why should anyone believe him now? He should step down, all he does is lie. He has no scruples and the fact that thousands of Americans die from shootings every year means zilch to him as long as his supporters say 'yes' and kowtow to him.

I like the idea of having the price a single round being the price of an insulin shot.

Doesn’t infringe the 2nd amendment.

I think my idea is a great start.

Too bad it's a bad idea that won't work.

Red Flag laws are unconstitutional “prior restraint” laws that violate our basic civil rights.

Tex, I figured some gun nut would come up with that argument. With one hand, you atribute gun violence to mental illness, while with the other, you remove the ability to do anything about it.

No right is absolute, not even freedom of speech (try yelling 'fire!' in a crowded movie theatre). Several family members and friends of recent mass shooting perpetrators tried to earn authorities, but without legislation, the cops had their hands tied.

Red flag legislation. Banning large volume magazines and assault style weapons. It's not perfect, but it's common sense and a good first step.

Right-wingers: abortions should be illegal because life is the most sacred thing

Also right-wingers: Guns should be allowed so that people can commit indiscriminate mass murder :)

Trump is saying whatever he can to get past this issue, as he's in an impossible situation. The people are angry, but the NRA have something on him that prevents him from being able to go against them.

Either way, someone will be angry.

Too bad it's a bad idea that won't work.

Confiscating guns won’t either nor changing the 2nd amendment.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Of course he should work with Congress. And of course that would mean he should listen to ideas other than building more mental asylums to try and solve the problem.

He has been, he’s been listening to both sides, but both sides are dug in and as I have said before, he’s not going to touch any issue regarding the 2nd amendment and neither would any Democrat.

Yes there does need to be another way than kowtowing to the NRA.

So we should kowtow to the emotion of radical liberals in Congress? For some reason they want to demonize the NRA, but they don’t want to touch the subject of mental disease.....huh...

But Trump's the President now. 260 or so deaths on his watch so far.

Every President has death on their watch. If you go by that analogy then liberals should hold Reagan accountable for all the death and gang violence throughout the 80’s in LA.

Yes it does. Trump's the man with the power and influence. He could make it happen, if he got serious about it.

Even a President has his limitations.

In the days immediately after the August shootings in Texas and Ohio, Trump said he was eager to implement "very meaningful background checks," saying there was "tremendous support" for it. He also said he disagreed with the NRA's stance that such legislation would open the door to infringing on Second Amendment rights.

Trump has the habit of saying something big, but then once the NRA gets involved, cowers back

He once said he's not afraid of the NRA, but he's proving it to be untrue

Yeah - funny how these random acts of murderous violence can make people emotional.

All the more reason to approach and deal with situations like these calmly and rationally.

Especially if they're self-imposed.

With valid reasons.
