the Mister Art of the Deal does not know how to make a deal?!!

9 ( +12 / -3 )

Honest answer...

Pelosi will not budge...

But should a compromise proposal be put on the House floor, there is a chance that some Democrats will break the ranks...

The key is to have a "counter proposal" be placed in the House for a vote... where those that do support can place their votes...

That is if she will even allow that to happen...

-3 ( +3 / -6 )

An emergency declaration by Trump could break the stalemate by letting him use existing, unspent money to build the U.S.-Mexico border wall, without needing congressional approval.

Then what? Sometime in the future a Democratic President pulls this maneuver on some other issue?

It's an issue. Not an emegency.

Other possibilities included tapping asset forfeiture funds, such as money seized from drug kingpins-

This is the only way this wall should be built. With the funds from the sale of illegal narcotics if the house will not authorize funds!

Democrats oppose that step but may be unable to stop it.

No government entity can stop an emergency declaration executive order by the President.

Many Republicans are wary, too.

Absolutely, yes, we are. Republicans like me not on board with Trump! Very few and far between.

The president is expected in the new week to sign legislation passed by Congress to provide back pay for some 800,000 federal workers who aren't being paid during the shutdown. Paychecks were due Friday, but many workers received stubs with zeroes.

Totally unacceptable. Legislation should not have to be used or written up to get American government workers paid.

"We're doing our best to make sure it doesn't impact our diplomacy,"

Best thing Pompeo ever said.

But some in the White House are trying to apply the brakes. Jared Kushner was among those opposed to the declaration, arguing to his father-in-law that pursuing a broader immigration deal was a better option.

So he is going to listen to his son in law? But not Mattis? Becarful Jared. Do not cross the Don. Or you are fired and divroced and outski!

Why make a 'deal' with a manchild who is so untrustworthy that he makes even your average Washington politician look like a paragon of upstanding virtue?

There was a compromise deal. It was agreed upon, and had 1.4 Billion dollars in it for upgrading border security (just not a wall, but actual, effective, comprehensive methods).

Everyone was on board with it. The House Repubs and the Democrats were on board with it. The Senate was on board with it.

Even Cadet Bonespurs was on board with it.

Until the talking heads, the low IQ blathering red faced dog whistling idiots like Limbaugh, Malkin and their ilk, got in his ear again.

Suddenly, Cadet Bonespurs is worried he's not going to look the tough guy, and so he suddenly backed out, tried to hijack the process and hold the government hostage. 5 Billion or bust.

And Pelosi has calmly said 'fine... go bust.'

I'd do the same thing with him.

He's full of hubris. One of those sins... the name escapes me. There were seven of them. They're like really bad.

Hold the line!

-13 ( +1 / -14 )

could lead future Democratic presidents to make similar moves to advance liberal priorities.

This makes me smile. If a border wall is a national emergency, so is the gun crisis, the opioid crisis, the health insurance crisis. And the best part is that Trump only thinks about today. He will leave Republicans to deal with the consequences long after his next 2 years are up. The other good news is that he can do all of that and lose in court anyway.

The fact is that the "master negotiator" put everyone in an impossible situation by making new demands right before singing and taking hostages as leverage. Now there's no way out for anyone. How could he not see that coming? Maybe he did and didn't care because he was just too emotional, who knows.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

What is Pelosi's counteroffer???

It's already been voted on and passed the Senate.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

some Republicans believe such a declaration would usurp congressional power and could lead future Democratic presidents to make similar moves to advance liberal priorities.

Wouldn't it be ironic if the election of Trump ultimately led to America having a rational gun-control plan put into place.

They voted him because he's a disrupter, and that would certainly be a disruption of the status quo!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

"the Mister Art of the Deal does not know how to make a deal?!!"

Sure he does. Unfortunately Nancy "Can we talk in private" Pelosi doesn't.

Chuck and Nancy are such an embarrassment to the American people.

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

The members of the two opposing parties remind me of infuriated chimpanzees, flinging turds at each other. If Americans are hell-bent on having their country go down the tube, there's plenty of blame to go around.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

strangerland: Wouldn't it be ironic if the election of Trump ultimately led to America having a rational gun-control plan put into place.

Well it's funny hearing them support the national emergency angle. An executive order by the Democrat drew outrage while new powers for the Republican are cheered....even if those new powers are at the expense of Congress.

Party before country.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

An executive order by the Democrat drew outrage while new powers for the Republican are cheered....even if those new powers are at the expense of Congress.

Any Trumpets want to address this hypocrisy?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

Trump should be tested for dementia before any further talks take place.

Pelosi could agree only to have Trump change his mind again and demand something completely different. It's just plain nuts to take this president seriously. He's flippin' all over the place.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

So there’s no mistake here, if Trump goes the route of an emergency declaration then the day a Democrat becomes president they can go the same route for climate change, gun violence, and healthcare... it would be “very easy” and 100% entitled to do so.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

The Republican Congress last year has already given Trump $1.2 Billion to spend on the wall - most of it still not spent

The current Democrat House is offering Trump another $1.3 Billion

That's how VP Pence came up with the compromise of $2.5 Billion, but Trump shut him down

6 ( +7 / -1 )

It's going to cost $25+ billion for the wall. This fight is over 20%.

6 ( +6 / -0 )

The Republican Congress last year has already given Trump $1.2 Billion to spend on the wall - most of it still not spent

Not true. Contracts have been signed. 93% is obligated or spent already. https://www.politifact.com/truth-o-meter/statements/2019/jan/04/chris-murphy/has-trump-administration-spent-only-6-percent-bord/

The $1.3B is for border security, but specifically cannot be spent on new wall/fence sections.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Trump has no idea about anything... certainly not about being presidential, or even about being an adult.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Republican Congress last year has already given Trump $1.2 Billion to spend on the wall - most of it still not spent

It's gonna cost $5 billion for the wall. What's he gonna do with $1.2 billion?

That's what the Republican Congress gave him - even the Republican Congress didn't want to be on the hook for the American taxpayers for more than that, for a wall that will inevitably cost way more than that (constructions always cost more than what's proposed)

5 ( +5 / -0 )

gcbel: "So there’s no mistake here, if Trump goes the route of an emergency declaration then the day a Democrat becomes president they can go the same route for climate change, gun violence, and healthcare... it would be “very easy” and 100% entitled to do so."

Exactly! The difference being that the examples you mentioned of what the Democratic party can and should do if Trump succeeds in doing what you say, is that those things are actual emergencies.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

Trump could end this with:

I've listened to the people. Some want a wall, but right now others want to go back to work. I wanted a wall, that Mexico would pay for, but instead, let's focus the money we have on other methods of border security, so that we can move forward as a country.

Unfortunately, I don't see it happening.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Trump has no idea about anything... certainly not about being presidential, or even about being an adult.

What? Liberals and Democrats are the very last people to throw boulders.

-12 ( +1 / -13 )

Trump is trying to run the US like he would a Corporation. To do this, he has to become a Dictator. Not doing so, means he won't achieve his goals. What a quandary to be facing. The US Democracy is in question.... over a wall... sounds like a garden border dispute between neighbors. Whatever happened to his popular the "Drain the Swamp" ... now, that, would be something of a notable achievement, rather than building walls.... unless such walls were part of a Government support plan for their Steel Industries ?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

“Lawmakers are due back in Washington from their states and congressional districts in the new week.”

.....and from lobbyist funded beach vacations in Puerto Rico.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

How dare they go anywhere when Dear Leader has shut down the government.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Chuck and Nancy can just give the money so that people can go back to work too. 60 million+ people voted for a wall, we don’t have the give up so 800,000 can go back to work.

Especially knowing they will get full back pay, both for those who worked and those who are at home. In my world, “nonessential” employees don’t even have jobs to begin with. Remove 50,000 of those workers from the payroll and you have your wall funding.

-10 ( +2 / -12 )

Yes it’s not a good look to be going on expensive vacations funded by lobbyists who are trying to buy favors and their votes. Or do you support that now while federal workers aren’t being paid? Of course you are because it’s not about the workers they are just convenient pawns.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

Chuck and Nancy can just give the money so that people can go back to work too.

Why would they? It's Trump's shutdown:

"If you say who gets fired, it always has to be the top. Problems start from the top, and they have to get solved from the top, and the president’s the leader, and he’s got to get everybody in a room, and he’s got to lead. And he doesn’t do that, he doesn’t like doing that, that’s not his strength."

"when they talk about the government shutdown, they’re going to be talking about the president of the United States, who the president was at that time. They’re not going to be talking about who was the head of the House, the head the Senate, who’s running things in Washington. So I really think the pressure is on the president."

“FACT – the reason why Americans have to worry about a government shutdown is because Obama refuses to pass a budget.”

60 million+ people voted for a wall

And Trump could fix this so quickly if he'd just get Mexico to pay for it like he said they would:

"It's an easy decision for Mexico. Make a one-time payment of $5-10 billion to ensure that $24 billion continues to flow into their country year after year"

https://www.washingtonpost.com/apps/g/page/politics/memo-explains-how-donald-trump-plans-to-pay-for-border-wall/2007/?tid=a_inl_manual

Why is Trump holding America hostage, rather than making Mexico pay? Why is he letting Mexico disrespect America?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

"Trump should be tested for dementia"

But Pelosi is fine, right? hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

You just cut and paste the same things. It’s boring by now. We aren’t talking about blame, we are talking about solutions. One solution is for Trump to cave.

Another solution is for Dems to give the money for the wall. Either one gets people back to work.

https://thefederalist.com/2019/01/11/trump-will-win-shutdown/

“So here we are. What reason does President Trump possibly have to cave? You could point to the legitimately troubling stories of federal employees unable to pay the rent, as major networks have done, but as troubling as those stories are, can we really place the blame squarely on the one person who is open for a compromise?”

-5 ( +1 / -6 )

As Trump is the President and Pelosi and Schumer are not, they have to compromise with him. That’s how it works.

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

You just cut and paste the same things. It’s boring by now. We aren’t talking about blame, we are talking about solutions. One solution is for Trump to cave.

The only solution is for Trump to cave.

He campaigned on a wall paid for by Mexico. Mexico said no. That means no wall.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

can we really place the blame squarely on the one person who is open for a compromise?”

Trump is not open for a compromise.

And yes, we can put the blame on him solely. Everyone had an agreed upon budget, until he let Anne Coulter and the other pundits get in his ear. Then he, the 1/3 of the equation that is a single person, decided no budget.

So yeah, we can blame him, and only him. You know, as the people overwhelmingly are.

Blacklabel: ".....and from lobbyist funded beach vacations in Puerto Rico."

Quick question. How many hours, total, has Trump spent at golf in his two years presidency vs. the entire time of Obama that you guys whined about constantly for eight years? My guess is that suddenly "it doesn't matter", right? That's how hypocrisy usually goes, anyway.

Serrano: "As the partial government shutdown becomes the longest in history, what’s getting lost is the big news"

That Trump owns it, self proclaimed? That he is guilty of treason and a traitor to your nation? That he wishes it to become a dictatorship as he reaches ever further for the tools of a dictator? You take your pick of the FACTS instead of quoting white nationalists from YouTube channels.

Some of the outside advisers who want him to declare a national emergency say it could have two benefits.

First, it would allow him to claim that he was the one to act to reopen the government. Second, inevitable legal challenges would send the matter to court, allowing Trump to continue the fight for the wall — and continue to excite his supporters — while not actually closing the government or immediately requiring him to start construction.

I completely agreed with the outside advisers. The Democrats and Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer will become double losers if the President Trump has declared National Emergency. The President Trump can claim he cares about Federal employees and their families welfare and the US southern border security. So he has reopened the Government and will build the wall.

The President Trump can kill two birds with one stone if the President Trump was wised and intelligent.

If the Nancy Peolosi and Chuck Schumer are wise and intelligent and then they have to agree the President Trump demand and show the Democrat cares about welfare of federal employees and their families and also the United State border security as well.

There's no point in beating President Trump at this stage and she should stop talking nonsense about the border wall is an immorality. The US needs a border wall or border fence on the southern border with Mexico. The border fence or wall will deter future mass exodus of asylum seekers from central America. The genuine asylum seekers can still apply for refugee at the Mexican border and genuine refugees will allow to enter the United State at the border gate legally.

The American citizens can raise the question to the Democrat. Here, question for Nancy Pelosi and the Democrat from the American citizens.

Will Democrat Government allow all asylum seekers to enter the US without control if Democrat President and Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer won the 2020 Election?

Because, Nancy Pelosi was insisting and calling Trump's the border wall is an immorality. Nancy Peolosi was forcing to eat her own words by herself and no one else. One day, she will has to eat her own words. The Democrat Government has to build the wall if the Democrat President won the 2020 Election.

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Pelosi is the leader of the House and refuses to sit at the table and debate the the funds to be spent on what she terms an immoral wall. Nor will she sit at the table to demand the 700 miles of immoral wall already in existence be torn down. She likes the illegals flooding into the country by the millions. Dems will not do anything to stop illegality whenever it helps them politically.

Blacklabel: One solution is for Trump to cave. Another solution is for Dems to give the money for the wall. Either one gets people back to work.

Uhh....they could just fund the other agencies and have a separate debate about the wall funding. Everyone wins in that situation.

I think you said Trump wouldn't do that because if he funded the other agencies then Dems wouldn't talk to him anymore, so you need those unpaid workers as hostages. Is that still your opinion?

5 ( +7 / -2 )

And Wolfpack, maybe I'm wrong, but weren't you the one going around calling Obama a king for using executive orders? Are you OK with a system where a man like that can use national emergencies to go around Congress?

Trump, GOP blamed for shutdown; no crisis seen but fewer oppose wall (POLL)

https://www.yahoo.com/gma/trump-gop-blamed-shutdown-no-crisis-seen-fewer-100004545--abc-news-topstories.html

LOL! Worst President ever!

From the poll referenced above:

"Fifty-three percent in the national survey say Trump and the GOP are mainly responsible for the shutdown, while 29 percent blame congressional Democrats, nearly a 2-1 margin against the president and his party. "

They're getting clobbered. It's so bad that McConnell has gone back into his shell.

"A wide majority of Americans reject the claim at the heart of Trump’s address to the nation last week: Just 24 percent think the immigration situation at the border is at a crisis level. Even among supporters of a border wall, a less-than-overwhelming 46 percent see a crisis"

No one believe Trump's dog and pony show.

"66 percent oppose Trump using emergency powers to get it built. Half strongly oppose this course, double the number who strongly support it."

The result of Trump's lack of credibility.

Oh, and for those who will ask:

METHODOLOGY – This ABC News/Washington Post poll was conducted by landline and cellular telephone Jan. 8-11, 2019, in English and Spanish, among a random national sample of 788 adults. Results have a margin of sampling error of 4.5 points, including the design effect. Partisan divisions are 31-26-39 percent, Democrats-Republicans-independents.

I beg to differ.

You’re seeing more than ever support for a wall to be built and to put a stop to this madness. Funny, how the majority of these polls are done everywhere in the country except where it matters most, along the border and nearby border cities.

"66 percent oppose Trump using emergency powers to get it built. Half strongly oppose this course, double the number who strongly support it."

Take your pick. Trump and the GOP are getting slammed in all of them. The one I was referring to was specifically referenced and the link in the post above mine.

That's reality. If you can't handle it, just make something up where it doesn't exist anymore.

You can respond with polls about support for the wall, but even then people are saying they do to want a shutdown to get it, by a wide margin.

Trump said he wanted a shutdown and said he wanted to own it, and people took him up on his offer.

He’s preparing to break more Democrats hearts with their legislation getting ready to become DOA.

The Dems are already returning the favor by refusing to vote on McConnels bills that cross their desk. Didn't see that coming?

Like the msm does every single day? No thanks.

You can respond with polls about support for the wall, but even then people are saying they do to want a shutdown to get it, by a wide margin.

No one wants a shutdown, that’s obvious, but the Democrats want Trump to take their deal, accept dear and capitulate and not take either any money or less than the amount he asked for, even if Trump will give the Dems DACA and legalize 2-3 million, if they’re going to be like then as bad as the shutdown is, the President also needs to stand up to this hostage taking from the Democrats point of position and try to meet in the middle and if they don’t, he shouldn’t as well.

Trump said he wanted a shutdown and said he wanted to own it, and people took him up on his offer.

At the same time, Democrats look more and more like they’re just all talk when it comes to the border and actually really don’t care because if they did, they would actually come up with a solution to stopping illegal immigration, but they don’t care, they SAY they do, but they don’t do anything, they say they’re doing SOMETHING, but what that “something” is besides talking out of both sides of their mouths is anyone’s guess.

The Dems are already returning the favor by refusing to vote on McConnels bills that cross their desk. Didn't see that coming?

Actually we did. Come on, I can’t belive you even had the nerve to mention that. Lol

It's just going to be more gridlock and that’s good. Both sides don’t get what they want and some people will feel the pinch. And personally as long as the President doesn’t get what he wants, I want him to hold that line as long as it takes.

How are the Democrats the hostage takers? They have signed bills waiting for Trump and the GOP to sign to put them back to work. But they don't. Why is that, bass? Another, "no thanks?"

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Kinda hard to make a deal with Pelosi when she's not willing to make any compromises.

wtf you talking about its Trump that doesn't want to compromise, hes demanded 5.6billion for a wall all long nothing less , hes holding federal workers hostage until he gets it, thats not compromise.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

this hostage taking from the Democrats

lol Trump has stated on national TV that he owns this shut down, hes not prepared to pay governmenet employees until he gets his wall money, HTF does that equal Democrats being hostage takers. Oh forgot Trump logic stikers again

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Trump wants money for a wall/fencing/peaches and other boarder security measures. Pelosi say "no, you get nothing for that." So the compromise is Trump saying "ok, forget about the wall and border security stuff"? That's not compromise. Pelosi agreed to border security funding before, now eh, never mind.

Federal workers hostage? Ha ha ha. Has it been 6 months without pay? Maybe these people need to learn to save money better if they can't go 3 weeks without pay and no money.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Yeah I love how the Dems “compromise” is for Trump to just accept getting nothing. Despite 60 million voting for him to get it.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

Yeah I love how the Dems “compromise” is for Trump to just accept getting nothing.

He's done that himself....Donnie the Caveman...

Mexico will pay for the wall - until they won't...

It's a pre-caste concrete wall - until is isn't...

It's a steel slat wall - until it isn't...

It's a fence - until it isn't...

It's a barrier - until it isn't...

Meanwhile Nancy and Chuck show what real backbone is...

Despite 60 million voting for him to get it.

Then why did he leave it out of the Dec funding bill he said he'd sign until humiliated by Ingram and Limbaugh?

0 ( +1 / -1 )

Because Trump doesn’t write bills, he signs them. He told the Dems what to put in it and they chose not to thinking he would cave. He didn’t.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

We might find out that we don’t even need so many federal employees after all. Which side does that hurt, I forget who is for “big government”.

Because Trump doesn’t write bills, he signs them. He told the Dems what to put in it and they chose not to thinking he would cave. He didn’t.

Who said he writes bills? The bill passed both Repub House and Senate in Dec - both Ryan and McConnell voted for it - and Trump told them he's sign it. Then his "humiliation" began...and he caved...

Humiliated by two women, Ingram and Malkin, that must have really gotten to Donnie...

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Did he really say he would sign it? Or did you just hope so?

I remember him saying in fact that he would never sign such a bill again after they talked him into signing that omnibus bill with full funding for the wall. Hey here he is saying it:

McConnell and Ryan would have never scheduled it for a vote if Trump didn't tell them he'd sign it. Why would they do that and humiliate themselves? They'd do like McConnell is doing now - hiding in his shell...

shouldnt have started mocking him before he signed it like some of you were doing here.

But he's so easy to mock...

Wait until after he signs it next time.

Yep, he'll cave and sign it...

Your mistake.

That's what Stormy said...

Bass4funk: “No one wants a shutdown, that’s obvious,”

nope. Trump wanted one if he didn’t get his way. THAT is obvious by the fact that despite a bipartisan bill he said he’d sign, he didn’t. You support that partisan move to hind the nation hostage. Fact. THAT is obvious.

Black label: “I remember him saying in fact that he would never sign such a bill again after they talked him into signing that omnibus bill with full funding for the wall”

ah, selective memory! And yet you can’t remember Trump saying on TV that he owns this.

Today’s media word is “vanity project”. That’s what the Dems and the media are calling the wall today.

i clearly remember Trunp saying he owns this. Yet if Dems want it fixed, they have that ability. Otherwise government is closed until Dems compromise.

Sure they would. Do liberals love and trust Paul Ryan now too? I showed you video of Trump clearly saying he will a NOT sign anything like that again. Was very clear.

Trumper logic:  Trump said he would sign a funding bill in Dec that Repubs passed, then was shamed by Ingram and Limbaugh and flip-flopped - then went on TV and said he was "proud to own the shutdown" and would "take the mantle"  Then when things got hot, he flip-flopped again and blamed Democrats.

Donnie the frog, everywhere he goes he flip-flops...

Presumably if Americans wanted Congress to just go along with Trump's whims they would voted in more Republicans in November.

The only true thing Trump has ever tweeted, 'Elections have consequences!'. They certainly do and when idiots like Trump get elected the consequences are a disaster.

@Super: And Wolfpack, maybe I'm wrong, but weren't you the one going around calling Obama a king for using executive orders? Are you OK with a system where a man like that can use national emergencies to go around Congress?

Well yes, I did. But that was when I believed that the law mattered. It’s plainly obvious that the rule of law in America today is irrelevant. It was clearly wrong for Obama to implement the DACA and DAPA programs. He said himself multiple times beforehand that he didn’t have the power to do it. Yet it did so anyway even though Congress never allowed for it. The Left tilting court system has come up with numerous lame excuses to allow Obama’s non-legislative edict to stand.

The Left is now so radical that even mainstream Dems are no longer in favor of stopping illegal immigration - claiming a regularized system is immoral. Outlaw the border enforcement agency, sanctuary cities and states, active non-cooperation with federal immigration authorities. All in support of people who aren’t even citizens. It boggles the mind.

Obama’s numerous executive orders that the courts have essentially turned into law and Hillary’s ability to get away with sending classified material in her own email along with her funding the FBI’s fake premise for Trumps impending impeachment is all one needs to know that America has become a corrupt banana republic. Why should Trump supporters look at all of this and think that they should play by a different set of rules?

Dems don’t believe in compromise. Pelosi straight up stated that she will not consider compromise. Trump offered her several compromises but the Dems rejected them all out of hand. Pelosi needs to do her job - pass a bill, reconcile it with the Senate, and get the Presidents signature. That will require her to meet Trump halfway. Instead of $5.6 billion how about $2.5 billion?

Pelosi needs to do her job - pass a bill, reconcile it with the Senate, and get the Presidents signature.

No, her job is to represent the views of her constituents, particularly the ones who voted for her. That may involve compromise to get bipartisan legislation passed or it may not.

That may involve compromise to get bipartisan legislation passed or it may not.

Very true. And it may also involve the other side pursuing the samed strategy and the partial government shutdown continuing indefinitely. Trump has offered to compromise. Pelosi has refused to utilize the institution she partially leads to get the paychecks flowing again for her deep state backers in the Federal bureaucracy. If she is going to be that obstinate about it the partial shutdown will continue until she buckles under and agrees to fund a couple hundred miles more of the wall/fence. Your call Nancy.
