Let's remember that North Korea didn't even have a single nuke back then and UN inspection teams were in the country confirming nuclear weapons weren't being produced. First, something can and is done - sanctions.

Second, why does anything else have to be done? Who exactly has been hurt by these rockets? The answer is the same number of people who get hurt when someone rattles a sabre.

Its the media again more than anything, CNN seems to have this as the latest headline as there is no 'definitive link' for the Russia nonsense. They have exhausted their stories about Russian salad dressing, Trump's fear of stairs and the Candian PM wanting to fight the dude from Friends tv show. The New York Times seems to have taken the weekend off while trying to figure out how to protect the name of the Obama administration official who signed off on the Trump surveillance that they still want to say didnt happen.

Also, I didnt say anything about attacking North Korea, no that wouldnt be smart. The President needs to involve China to calm these guys down and if China refuses then he needs to negotiate a resolution of this himself. It's amazing that Trump and the other people are so ready to become N. Korea, in order to stop N. Korea. Everyone is saying 'we need to attack first' - if you attack first, then you are doing exactly what you are criticizing them for potentially doing, when they haven't even done it.

N. Korea needs the appearance of fearlessness and strength in order to control their own people. They don't need to actually be fearless and strong, they just need their people to think that. So they rattle sabres.

The problem is that so many people can't handle a bit of sabre rattling, and think that N. Korea needs to be attacked. That whoever attacks them just as bad as that which they profess to hate.

I actually get your point here. Generally it would make sense, however in this case, the president simply cannot be (and isn't) trusted, which is why people want to know. If he had the confidence of the people, you would see a lot less calls for his plans.

In reality, the only true plan that would effectively take care of N. Korea would be taking out the leader, and the US isn't legally allowed to target foreign leaders.

They were contained pretty well during Bill Clinton's presidency. We had weapons inspectors in there and everything. It was only when Bush launched his "Axis of Evil" rhetoric that we lost control of the situation.

The royal Kim family of the DPRK do not follow international norms, but that doesn't make them crazy. They follow a very consistent pattern of playing the part of a boogieman in order to demand concessions out of people. So long as our leaders are willing to play their game and acknowledge them as a boogieman (as opposed to the starving, barely functional nation that it is) we cede power to the Kim regime to continue their belligerence. Smart presidents understand this. Dumb presidents play into it because they desperately need a bad guy to look tough against.

So, are you suggesting Trump has the powers of a king or just a two bit dictator?

The power of the president to unilaterally wage war without Congress (public input) was only intended as a defense power. The drafters of the constitution wanted to clearly break from the British monarchy model where the the king (or queen) alone has the power to declare and wage war.

American presidents have side stepped the constitutional limitations on a president's' ability to start and wage war, and they have caused mistrust. for doing so. Just look at the names of the Korea and Vietnam wars. They were initially called a police action to try and get around not having a declaration of war. By the time the Vietnam war came around, the public became very mistrustful before the war was even over. There is even a theory (not so crackpot) that the government would have a war every 15 to 20 years to thin out the non-college educated males in America and boost government spending to help the economy. The economy has been doing well enough for the last 40+ years to not have that as a potential risk, and America has gotten very good a fighting wars so that a majority of people survive a military conflict.

Sure, we shouldn't tell a country how we will wage war, but a President shouldn't put the country in a war unless it it absolutely needed at the time to defend the nation from an exigent threat or the public has input, through congress.

N. Korea is not a huge threat to the U.S., and the U.S. doesn't need to go to war with NK. These statements by Trump are just Trump PR to sound tough and make people like you believe in him. In reality, he doesn't know what he is talking about.

We all know that NK are in breach of many international nuclear weapons treaties... but the country is ruled by an absolute nutter who wouldn't be afraid to launch... and then we have America's Nutter in Chief talking about threatening him?

I doubt 4 years in office will make Trump royalty, and in the extremely unlikely event he were to be reelected, it would be no more likely. The Clintons and Bushes had "Royal Aspirations," and you are certain to see Chelsea running for office, and likely a few more Bushes as well, god save us. But Trump certainly does not. Trump is less royal than a pack of playing cards.

But something must be done about North Korea, something should have been done about them before they blew up their first bomb 11 years ago. Things are only going to become more dangerous as North Korea develops a longer arm for it's weapons. If Trump does do something, he'll catch hell for it, but the situation should never have been allowed to go on as long as it has. Obama, Bush, and Clinton will be no less responsible for what happens with North Korea, because they failed to act in their turns.

Man, I used to get educated by watching news programs now I just feel dumber. This week is going to be even more insane with China visit, King of Jordan visit, NK discussion, continuing healthcare debate and the identify of the Obama administration unmasker/leaker being made public.

The issue I have with Trump acting alone is that we the neighbours (SK and Japan in particular), would have to face NK's ire and missiles after such attack, not Trump nor his ppl back home. This is why any attack on NK should be part of a coordinated response (us, china, sk and japan at the very least).

Trump's credibility is an issue. PERIOD. China knows this and so does N. Korea. Trump has no plans. He only has marketing meant for his followers.

All those lies and tweets have eroded any credibility he had with the American people and foreign countries. The only people who still feel he has credibility are the 35% of the population that makes up his base. Still, when asked whether they trust what he says, they even hesitate to answer and ask to clarify the question, i.e., in what way should they trust him?

There is no solution to N. Korea without finishing the war that began in 1950 and that lasted three years. If the U.S. does that, it will have elements of the Iraq war where N. Korea lashes out at soft target (sending missiles to S. Korea and Japanese population centers) and elements of the original Korea war (China will be involved). Can the U.S. win that war? Yes, but it will be at great cost, and could bleed over into war with China. The scary part is that we don't have a thoughtful president like Truman in the WH. I don't agree with all of Truman's decisions in that war, but I am scared to death of Trump and would take Truman over Trump any day.

It does worry me that during the campaign he asked "why do we keep building nuclear weapons if we don't use them". And this should worry people because it has been fashionable for the last few years to declare - with no evidence - the NK's leader is deranged or mad and cannot be trusted. And now we before us a US president who if not mad is at least suffering from a disturbing personality disorder.

It's become obvious that you can't predict or even guess what Trump will actually do about some situations based on what he says until he actually does something.

Is this becoming a bit of a pattern for Trump? Spout a bunch of tough, outrageous bluster just before the meeting ("We're going to pull out of Japan!" "Germany owes us money!") and then during the meeting accomplish nothing to change the status quo and call it a successful negotiation?

Louis died in 1715 after leading France down the road that ended in 1789 with many of his kind having their heads *** off. The point was made that neither the king nor the POTUS is the state, and he brings peril and doom to the country that lets him get away with thinking that he is. Trump needs to be put in his place.

I agree with what he's saying about China. I think we should just keep moving more and more hardware into South Korea to force China's hand. As for his "secret plan", obviously I have my doubts.
