Trump says he would take info on 2020 presidential opponent from foreign countries

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would be willing to accept information from a foreign country on his opponent in the 2020 election race.

"I think you might want to listen... there's nothing wrong with listening," Trump said when asked by ABC News what he would do if a country such as Russia or China offered him such information.

He denied the suggestion that that would amount to foreign meddling in a U.S. election.

"It's not an interference, they have information -- I think I'd take it," Trump said. "If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the FBI -- if I thought there was something wrong."

Trump team contacts with Russians during the 2016 presidential campaign led to an initial FBI investigation of such dealings, which spawned special counsel Robert Mueller's probe into possible collusion and obstruction of justice as well as several similar, ongoing efforts in Congress.

The Russia issue has consumed the Trump presidency for the past two years, and his new remarks suggested he still sees nothing wrong with a U.S. political candidate accepting help from a foreign power.

Mueller's report on his investigation stated that while there was insufficient evidence to charge Trump with criminal conspiracy, he was happy enough to benefit from Russian dirty tricks.

Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden said that in his latest remarks Trump is "welcoming" foreign interference in U.S. voting.

"This isn’t about politics. It is a threat to our national security. An American President should not seek their aid and abet those who seek to undermine democracy," Biden said on Twitter.

Another Democratic presidential hopeful, Elizabeth Warren, seized on Trump's comments to ABC to repeat her strident calls for him to be impeached.

"The #MuellerReport made it clear: A foreign government attacked our 2016 elections to support Trump, Trump welcomed that help, and Trump obstructed the investigation," Warren tweeted.

"Now, he said he'd do it all over again. It's time to impeach Donald Trump."

The president's remarks came on the same day that his son Donald Jr was grilled by senators about his contacts with Russians.

The younger Trump likely faced questioning about his role in arranging meeting at Trump Tower meeting in June 2016 that included his father's son-in-law Jared Kushner, then-campaign manager Paul Manafort, and a Russian lawyer offering dirt on Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton.

"If it's what you say, I love it," Trump Jr had written in response to a 2016 email offering the information in a meeting.

Some Democrats suspect Trump Jr may have lied in previous testimony in 2017 about what he and his father knew about the now-infamous meeting, as well as other connections between the Trump campaign and Russia.

The Trump team had initially tried to cover up the meeting, providing conflicting stories about its purpose and what happened.

Mueller's report detailed how the president's former lawyer Michael Cohen recalled that Trump Jr may have told his father about the meeting; the president has denied knowing about it ahead of time.

Some Democrats suspect Trump Jr may have lied

And only Trump's authoritarianist followers might believe a word Trump Jr. says. Like father, like son, after all.

The most dishonest president in modern history has attracted a like-minded base with zero regard for honesty.

Trump the corrupt businessman is an even more corrupt politician. Although Mitch McConnell with campaign contributions from big US corporations plus his Russian connections, together with his wife's high salaried role in the Trump admin plus her Chinese connections might be raking in just as much.

The Trump era will be remembered for a level of corruption never before seen in modern US politics.

"If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the FBI -- if I thought there was something wrong."

Key word "I". What Trump THINKS is wrong and what in reality are wrong, are two different things. And that is the biggest problem with Trump.

If the US re-elects Trump, they, the American people, deserve any and all crap that the world delivers their way!

15 ( +17 / -2 )

How patriotic of him nothing surprises me anymore America is going down the s shute faster and faster everyday...

12 ( +14 / -2 )

This is what you got by putting a dirty businessman in the white house!

16 ( +18 / -2 )

@blaklabel Let liberals be outraged for days, then remind them that Hillary Clinton and the DNC bought and paid for.....dirt....from a spy.....of a foreign country

If that's investigated by the feds and shown to be the case, and it's determined what was done was illegal, charges should be brought.

NO US POLITICIAN should be seeking help from any foreign country.

And no US govt agency should provide help for foreign politicians.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

After Clinton and Trump won their nominations, their campaigns were each briefed by the FBI as standard procedure, which included a reminder that if the campaign is approached by a foreign government for any reason, the FBI needs to be notified. That has been policy and procedure for many years, and a bill has just been introduced to make it a crime not to do so.

The entire trump criminal family should be indicted and taken to trial.

18 ( +19 / -1 )

Remember when Al Gore's campaign anonymously received video copies of Bush's debate prep, and rather than watch it and get an invaluable bit of info, they called the FBI, handed over the material without looking at it, and alerted the Bush campaign that they had a leaker? Good times.

treason (Cambridge Dictionary):

(the crime of) showing no loyalty to your country, especially by helping its enemies or trying to defeat its government

If it looks lie treason, walks like treason and talks like treason, it's treason.

16 ( +17 / -1 )

I'm not certain what moral high ground people wish to attribute to my country's political past but I do recognize that some are making a lot of money with these fabricated story lines of Trump being the greatest offender of everything that is good about the USA.

-14 ( +2 / -16 )

If I thought there was something wrong, I'd go maybe to the FBI -- if I thought there was something wrong.

Hmm. The DNC database was hacked, and suddenly Russians are showing up at your door with that info - and then you egg them on. Y'see Donald, a huge gap exists between what you think is wrong and what moral people do.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

Just this: what a jerk!!

5 ( +5 / -0 )

He's done it before, he'll do it again. Illegal, isn't it.

13 ( +13 / -0 )

Trump's-Law!

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Cue the entire GOP deciding that allowing hostile foreign powers to do this is totally OK from now on.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

President Donald Trump said Wednesday that he would be willing to accept information from a foreign country on his opponent in the 2020 election race.

And there you have it - an open admission that he would collude with a foreign power to subvert our democracy. Maybe because he colluded to get elected?

So what do the Trumpers think of this? Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr and Ivanka's e-mails, you know, those ones that talk about the Russian meeting in Trump Tower and Russian loans to the Trump Org?

Fair is fair, right?

9 ( +9 / -0 )

these fabricated story lines of Trump being the greatest offender of everything that is good about the USA.

Just to be clear: every word of this is Trump's own words on tape.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

All of the saintly Dem potential candidates have nothing to hide anyway.

-5 ( +2 / -7 )

The rumbling that was heard all over America was from all the dead Republican Presidents rolling in their graves.

The GOP has turned into a party of traitors and their brainless , gutless followers.

...these fabricated story lines..

What's "fabricated" about this one? The words came from Trump himself.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

This will stop all the Trumpophiles from falsely claiming Clinton colluded with a foreign power for the Steele Dossier, correct?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

What's "fabricated" about this one? The words came from Trump himself.

Probably just having a hard time realizing Trump said something he/she disagrees with.

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Just when you thought he couldn't lose the plot any further, he goes and lowers the bar yet again (and it was already lower than sea level!).

6 ( +6 / -0 )

Well, there it is. Admitting and open to collusion. All on tape and in broad daylight.

Impeachment now.

11 ( +11 / -0 )

Don't worry, trump has so much time that he will take time to fight with the world.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

What's fabricated is both the moral outrage, the never ending fantasies of legal knowledge.

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Nothing fabricated. Here's your leader admitting he's willing to collude with foreign interference. That's not a good look, no matter how his supporters spin it.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

JustMyThoughtsToday  05:22 pm JST

What's fabricated is both the moral outrage, the never ending fantasies of legal knowledge.

Sorry, that just looks like a bunch of random words strung together.

Then again, when Trump comes out with stuff like this there can't be a whole lot else you could manage in his defense.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

@Justmythoughts What's fabricated is both the moral outrage, the never ending fantasies of legal knowledge...yeah i know its crazy isnt it but hey if you want to know anything you can ask a fellow Trumpster think his name is bass4something he seems to know everything if he doesn't usually one of his relatives works there so he can find out.....

8 ( +8 / -0 )

What's fabricated is both the moral outrage

yes it is an outrage that a sitting POTUS would accept foreign information / advice over his own countres intelligence and it is also a nation security issue.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

Sorry, that just looks like a bunch of random words strung together.

well you know Trump derangement syndrome is contagious

7 ( +7 / -0 )

I thought Trump didn't trust the intelligence community. Maybe it's the word "intelligence"that bothers him.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

What's fabricated is both the moral outrage, the never ending fantasies of legal knowledge.

First, kudos for being the only Trumper to post anything on this thread - all the others are MIA...go figure...

But you're absolutely wrong, The moral outrage isn't fabricated - it's deeply sincere - no one wants a foreign power interfering in our election - except Donnie and Vlad. Think of all the rulers of countries out there that hate America - for having free and open elections, for allowing free speech, for separating church and state. Trump just gave them an open invitation to attack our democracy.

As for "never ending fantasies of legal knowledge" - sorry, haven't the faintest idea what that means.

And I'd be interested in your reply to my question to Trumpers;

Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr and Ivanka's e-mails, you know, those ones that talk about the Russian meeting in Trump Tower and Russian loans to the Trump Org?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

Granted I didn’t follow the thread but this was too funny. How did y’all go from “take info on 2020 presidential opponent from foreign countries” to “accept foreign information / advice over his own countres intelligence and it is also a nation security issue.”?

Information and advice are two different birds.

-9 ( +2 / -11 )

FizzBitToday  05:59 pm JST

How did y’all go from “take info on 2020 presidential opponent from foreign countries” to “accept foreign information / advice over his own countres intelligence and it is also a nation security issue.”?

I don't think anyone went anywhere, given that "take info... from foreign countries" and "accept foreign information" look like pretty much the same thing to me.

Anyone else think this is just hair-splitting?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

What?

''First, kudos for being the only Trumper to post anything on this thread - all the others are MIA...go figure..."

I've never voted Republican in my life! But your assumption is exactly what this thread is all about. Everyone is on a side, has a pre-fabricated opinion that was fead to them by an endless consumption of thier own 'media of choice'.

Yes, I believe the people have a right to know any information that is available. You can imagine whatever hypotheticals you like.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

Imagine the idea that if you don’t want people getting your dirt, then don’t be dirty.

If you are proven dirty with factual evidence and my opponent for something why would I not look at it and use it?

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

The insufferable current occupant of the White House, confirms once again, he is unfit to be President of the United States of America (POTUS).

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Yes, I believe the people have a right to know any information that is available. You can imagine whatever hypotheticals you like.

Not following you...you seem fixated on "hypotheticals"...

Imagine the idea that if you don’t want people getting your dirt, then don’t be dirty. If you are proven dirty with factual evidence and my opponent for something why would I not look at it and use it?

You've just given a full vote of support and justification for Hillary funding the Steele Dossier - well done. That was some switch - from "Lock Her Up" to "why not use it?"

And still waiting for a Trumper to answer the questions below;

Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr and Ivanka's e-mails, you know, those ones that talk about the Russian meeting in Trump Tower and Russian loans to the Trump Org?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

The point is that you say Hillary using a fake dossier from a UK spy with Russian sources is fine.

yet if trump gets true info even in a hypothetical situation it’s treason. Hypocritical much?

-8 ( +1 / -9 )

Whose tax records did Trump hack and share? and if Don Jr and Ivanka are dumb enough to send emails like that, then they can be shared no problem. People should be informed.

Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr and Ivanka's e-mails, you know, those ones that talk about the Russian meeting in Trump Tower and Russian loans to the Trump Org?

-7 ( +1 / -8 )

The point is that you say Hillary using a fake dossier from a UK spy with Russian sources is fine.

I'm not saying anything, you are - perhaps you need reminded;

Imagine the idea that if you don’t want people getting your dirt, then don’t be dirty. If you are proven dirty with factual evidence and my opponent for something why would I not look at it and use it?

May want to read it again and then read this;

https://www.businessinsider.com/steele-dossier-allegations-trump-russia-mueller-investigation-2019-1#whats-been-corroborated-and-what-hasnt-2

Thanks again for supporting Hillary's use of the Steele dossier...

By the way, for the third time, care to answer the questions below;

Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr and Ivanka's e-mails, you know, those ones that talk about the Russian meeting in Trump Tower and Russian loans to the Trump Org?

4 ( +4 / -0 )

You know why those emails were not hacked and shared? Because they don’t exist. Unlike the 33,000 that did exist but were deleted despite a subpoena.

4th time - still no answer....why's it so hard?

6 ( +6 / -0 )

I answered your question at 7:19

-7 ( +0 / -7 )

So Hillary and the dossier is fine? Then If Trump gets foreign info it’s fine too. Why the liberal double standards?

-8 ( +0 / -8 )

Hey lincolnman,

What are you looking for? Is it OK to 'hack' data, maybe. Is it OK for Joe Biden to have Trumps tax records? I guess, that seems to be what everyone wants now days. So, why not, Yes.

Should wikileaks, leak. YES, everything. It should 'leak' everything or change it's name.

Do you understand. I have no issues with people having information.

-6 ( +0 / -6 )

It is ok for the people to have any information that is true which makes its way to the public domain. No matter how it is obtained. Can’t be any more clear than that.

Problem with your dossier is that it’s fake.

-9 ( +0 / -9 )

I answered your question at 7:19

Really? So its OK for the Chinese to hack Donnie's tax records and send them to Joe Biden? It's OK for Iran to hack Don Jr, Eric and Ivanka's e-mails and let Wikileaks release them?

How about the transcript from the meeting Trump had with Putin where there was no US interpreter - OK if Wikileaks releases that?

It's OK for Cuba to get Trump's communications with the Russians on Trump Tower Moscow and give it to the DNC?

You're OK with all of this?

And thanks again for the switch on the Steele Dossier - I was getting tired hearing about the "witch hunt"...

5 ( +5 / -0 )

He’s just saying he would probably do what the Democrats did and now they’re having another meltdown? This is great! Lol

-14 ( +0 / -14 )

It is ok for the people to have any information that is true which makes its way to the public domain. No matter how it is obtained. Can’t be any more clear than that.

Which incentivizes foreign meddling in our elections. You are advocating for hostile powers to obtain private information and place it in the public domain.

Problem with your dossier is that it’s fake.

Damn! I knew I paid Steele too much. He cashed the check last week; I just checked my banking records.

If you are proven dirty with factual evidence and my opponent for something...

Then that "factual evidence" should be presented in a court of law and I should be tried and convicted.

...why would I not look at it and use it?

Because doing so would be illegal?

BlacklabelToday  07:14 pm JST

The point is that you say Hillary using a fake dossier from a UK spy with Russian sources is fine.

I say she should face the consequences of any wrongdoing if it's proven by the proper authorities that she's broken the law. You're not going to say the same about Donald Trump, are you.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

lincolnman

Why do you have issues with 'the people' having information. You continuously make up stories about hacking, spies, the boogie man. Give it a break. Yes, people should have information. I trust them to figure out what is correct. Not the government.

Why is it great? The President you love is saying he would do the same thing as the Democrats, but you hate them so much you can't stop whining and ranting about them.

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Somehow Dems never make it to a court. FBI and CIA directors and Dem presidents protect them.

Then that "factual evidence" should be in a court of law and I should be tried and convicted.

-11 ( +0 / -11 )

Sounds like Trump is asking for some help.

It just gets more amazing each day....

Then today, Trump states he would violate his own Executive Order...

The Great Orange Self-Admitted Criminal. Get Robert Mueller back on the job, time for another Special Counsel...

And no Trumper has yet to answer the question...

Do you think its OK for China to hack Trump's tax records and give them to Joe Biden? What about Iran giving Wikileaks all Don Jr, Eric's and Ivanka's e-mails..., you know, the ones Ivanaka kept on a private server?

I have answered your question multiple times. Yes it is ok. And yes the other thing is ok. And anything else you make up is ok too. Anything that is true should be publicly available. Why can you not accept this answer and claim no one is answering you.

yes yes yes and yes. Full disclosure of dirt.

-9 ( +1 / -10 )

Trump says he would take info on 2020 presidential opponent from foreign countries

And soon afterward, special diplomatic memos (on Trump stationary) went to Russia, North Korea, Iran, Cuba, and China saying; "Fellow dictators and tyrants, I'm open for business - send me all your made up dirt - I'll take all of it as I subvert the US Constitution and make the US more like your countries...."
