Mr. Trump pretty much undercut any legal argument his administration's attorneys can make to justify using Border Patrol to engage in law enforcement in US cities when their mayors and governors have expressly said they do not want them there. His boasting that he will send Federal forces into Democratic run cities for the reasons he states, mayors are "far left", etc., is clearly and publicly an effort to use Federal forces to suppress the citizens of cities who's citizens and leaders are his political adversaries. It is essentially mass punishment. There are no objective criteria for sending Federal forces to a given city and doing so over the stated objections of state and local leadership will probably go down in flames in court. The Federal government has no right to usurp local authority in this manner. The leaders of Portland are trying to use the absolute minimum amount of force to bring the protests under control. Border Patrol is using maximum force to agitate the crowd instead of trying to diffuse the situation and blaming the resulting violence on the leaders of Portland. Maybe Mr. Trump thinks he is being clever but his motives are transparent and most of us can see him for the incipent tyrant that he is. It would not surprise me if Border Patrol tried to declare curfews and even martial law in some cities before the election in November.

I'm not a Trump supporter and this is probably politically incorrect for me to say, but if my home or business was in the direct path of a Black Lives Matter mob, then I'd welcome federal officers on my street to prevent my home or business from being looted and burned down by these hooligans.

In record numbers, black people are being injured, and murdered, by black gangbangers in Chicago. The elected democrats running the city have clearly lost control of the city's safety. The mayor doesn't blame the actual perpetrators of these acts of violence for their acts of violence, she blames the police. Arrested rioters/protestors are being released without posting bail. Wouldn't want those rioters/protestors to miss the next day's violence.

Portland has been under siege from rioters/protestors for months. Burn and loot, loot and burn. The elected democrats in charge of the city have clearly lost control of the city's safety. But they aren't blaming the rioters/protestors for the violence that the rioters/protestors are creating. Elected democrats began by blaming the police, and now they are blaming the federal officers, for attempting to stop the rioting, burning, and looting. The Democrat Party is the party of anarchy, which is hoping to be led by Joe Biden, who appears to have suffered from a stroke.

Not having read any of the comments above:

1.  Why "threatened"?  Isn't he doing what a President should to enforce the law?

2.  Why the view that he is somehow provoking the lawlessness?  surely all the looting and rioting and so on happened long before these "threats"?

Are citizens in these cities really happy with the current state of affairs?  Us sitting here in Japan may find it hard to comprehend what it is like living in such a violent and unsettled environment.

How exactly would a different President handle this better?  By apologizing?  Pulling down all the statues?  Letting the protestors carry on as they please?

"Law enforcement" in Portland is the business of the local authorities ("states' rights") while the national pandemic that has killed 140,000 and still counting is the responsibility of the federal government. That Trump has got his job *ss backwards is yet more proof (as if any reasonable person needed any more) of his fundamental unfitness for the highest office in the land.
