Trump's major problem is that he's said so many things over the years that he often contradicts himself. Its hard to explain (or even keep track of ...) his flip/flops over the years. Congress has many but has not advanced any of them, mostly because the Dems refuse to move solely on increased boarder security without accompanied reforms to undocumented worker status, while the GOP is terrified to even discuss the latter. Bush actually got 40% of the Hispanic vote. The votes are there if Republicans would simply stop pushing Latinos away. It was the biggest single item the GOP said they needed to address after the last Presidential loss. At the top of the list was immigration reform, something Boehner personally killed by refusing to hold a vote. He could have gotten millions of Hispanic voters but instead he chose to protect his own job from the fringe right that would have gone after him for the crime of passing a comprehensive immigration reform bill with bipartisan support.

In the end the GOP ignores that and chalks it up to "they are dumb and Democrats give them free stuff so we just can't win."

As crude as he can be, he just resonates especially when he talks about immigration which is fueling a lot of anger for many Americans particularly for the people that live in the border states. Neither party wants to deal with the issue, but with Trump now in the debates, rest assured, he will bring up and force the issue and the GOP better have a good answer because Trump will sound off on it. Trump is not a politician or the greatest orator, but he speaks in a way that everyday ordinary people can understand and at least for now, like him or not he's going to stay relevant.
