Own goal by Sweden....alowing a Koran burning protest in front of a Turkish Embassy...what was the govt thinking?

They were following their laws. That's smart for a free and open society. Anything less would be an atrocity.

We have a word for places that have govts that break up peaceful, legal, protests. Dictatorships. As soon as a protest becomes violent or tries to harm someone else's property, THEN the govt can step in, not before.

I've been to Turkiye. I've seen peaceful protestors there hit with tear gas. It isn't fun. Protestors get bored when nobody fights them and they go away. Turkiye needs to learn this.

In May with Erdogan loses the Presidential election, Sweden will join NATO. Ok, I don't really believe Erdogan will lose. Elections everywhere are slanted so the incumbent will win, but I can have hope.

it turns out he has Swedish citizenship. He has a right to protest in his country and the Swedish authorities have no right under their constitution to prevent him. The real fault lies with Turiye. They do not acknowledge the right to protest against the policies of the AKP and their leadership. It is Turkiye that is incompatible with NATO.

What he did is uncalled for, offensive, provocative and more than a little stupid but as a Swedish citizen he has that right to explicitly show the world what an idiot he is. He can protest all he wants if the action is peaceful. Nonetheless, burning a Quran in public is a bit DUMB. Rasmus Paludan has shown what a dum-dum boy he truly is.

Gintonic - what would you have the Swedish government do? In democracies, peaceful protest is allowed and I don't think we want to give that up.

And in a democracy that's guaranteed. Others don't have to like it, but at worst Rasmus Paludan has portrayed himself to be a cretin.

The problem lies with the Turkish PM. If Islam is so predominant in their government then how about following the Ten Commandments which are embodied within the Quran itself?

One Commandment says: No other gods. That implies Ataturk and his personality cult in Turkey.

Another Commandment says: Do not take the Name of the LORD in vain. Do not use God as a tool for a selfish hateful agenda.

Another Commandment says: Love your neighbor as yourself. Don't go bashing somebody because he's different from you.

Erdogan has a lot of nerve talking trash over issues like this. Is Turkey truly a NATO ally or not? He needs to shut up and look at himself. He has plenty of room to talk!

DT,for a man claim to be worldly, you of all people should know the US value it dysfunctional relationship with Turkey ,more than with Sweden, Sweden has little value too the US, Biden would never invite the Prime Minister of Sweden too his dog house

The Swedish Army sent a battalion of mechanized infantry to Afghanistan to fight alongside the US even though they are not a NATO member. The Turks did not. The Swedes lent the US Navy one of their excellent diesel electric subs for two years so the US Navy could experiment with ways to find and deal with such submarines since the US only has much larger deep water nuclear subs. I would argue the Swedes have been better allies to the US than the Turks.

Now, imagine if Finland let a well known antiSemite burn the Torah in front of the Israeli embassy.

Think they'd be getting into NATO after that?

Think any of the critics of democratic Turkiye for objecting to the blatant act of hate in Sweden would see Finland being barred problematic?

The Swedish government, like most western democracies has no authority to prohibit their citizens from protesting peacefully. Sweden is not an authoritarian government run by a thin skinned near dictator like Turkiye where you can be imprisoned for "Insulting the state". I originally thought Sweden could have barred that one protest organizer from coming over from Denmark intent on burning a koran but it turns out he has Swedish citizenship. He has a right to protest in his country and the Swedish authorities have no right under their constitution to prevent him. The real fault lies with Turiye. They do not acknowledge the right to protest against the policies of the AKP and their leadership. It is Turkiye that is incompatible with NATO.

We can also "encourage" Turkey to act in its own interests by pointing out the downsides of being a bad partner in collective self-defense

A good first move would be for the US to withdraw all of its forces from Turkiye, close all consulates, reduce diplomatic staff at the US Embassy in Ankara to the bare minimum, send all diplomatic families home and make a diplomatic posting to Turkiye a one year unaccompanied hardship tour. Even better would be if the Greeks would be willing to host the USAF squadron and its nuclear weapons currently based at Incirlik AB, otherwise just withdraw the weapons from Europe unless another NATO member like Italy was wiling to host them at Aviano AB for example.

If Russia were smart, they would send a dude to burn the Koran in Finland.

Sweden and Finland won't be joining NATO.

Finland will probably join without Sweden.

Says the Thug who unleashed his goons on peaceful protesters on the streets of DC.

Sweden will be a NATO member eventually and the NATO members can always make interim bilateral defense agreements on a country basis.

We can also "encourage" Turkey to act in its own interests by pointing out the downsides of being a bad partner in collective self-defense.

And no, Turkey is not going to "switch over," they've seen the previews and don't want to stay for the feature.

complicit in a “hate and racist crime” for failing to prevent weekend protests

They were peaceful protests. No damage to someone else's property was reported. Nobody was threatened. How is this hate or racist? Freedom of expression and to demonstrate peacefully are core Western values.

Sweden has libel laws. If something was said in public about another person that wasn't true, sue them.

Destroying a book isn't illegal. It might be in poor taste, but that's a matter of opinion. Disliking the words in a book isn't the same as threatening an entire people/race.

The west continues to dig itself deeper and deeper into a mess. Goaded on by the propagandistic MSM the public has a completely skewed idea of the reality of the conflict. Putin is 5 moves ahead at all times.
