Turkey under Erdogan has increasingly aligned his once secular country with Islam. Within the wars taking place in the Middle East, Turkey today is an impediment. If on the odd chance that Putin or someone in the West is helping to orchestrate a coup by the fiercely secular Turkish military against its religious government, then well played. I hope they succeed. Far better there be a secular military dictatorship than democratic theocracy.

FYI This has happened more than a few times in modern Turkish history. The military seems to views themselves as the guardians of secularism and modernism.
After seeing what Erdogan has done the past few years, I'm a little more understanding of their conceit...

Military helicopter just shot down by an air force jet.

Great now Erdigan will become even more paranoid.

Poor Turks! Trapped between the rock of Islamism and the hard place of fascist militarism. Democracy is still a mirage for this long-suffering people, but Turkish fascism has always provided plenty of business opportunities for the western military-industrial complex with the added bonus of offering reassurance to the so-called "international community" alarmed by periodic outbreaks of the popular will, whether democratic or latterly islamist. If the coup succeeds, we'll be able to hear the chuckles and sighs of relief in the corridors of power from the White House to Westminster.

Is there a mediterranean country going 'reasonably' well in 2016? As much as i love this part of the world it has to be said they have been in self destruct mode for centuries from the middle east to north africa and south europe. And you just have the feeling it's only going to get worse.
Coincidently most dominant religions originate from this part of the world. Perennial powder keg.

The coup has already failed at accomplishing anything beyond giving Erdogan the pretext for a crackdown. No more trying to fudge with the constitution. Here comes the martial law and the openly pro-Islamist moves. Jokers jumping way too early just created their own self-fulfilling prophecy/worst case scenario. Smooth move, coup clowns.

@Joeintokyo "Only took 8 months to happen. Not bad".
Indeed.
Swallow it, Erdogan. Next time you should think twice before playing dangerous games with the Russians.

Imagine the faces of the Western leaders who maybe back turkeys dictator so he can fund IS, on instructions from a certain Jewish state. I think they will still their coffee because they didn't see this coming.

Ladbrokes will soon have odds on who Erdogan blames first: the US, Russia, the Kurds or Daesh.

Ah...An early gift from the Clinton Foundation.

Well so much for that. This is why Turkey should never become part of the Europe. If the Turks like Erdogan so much, they can keep him. No deals with Turkey, no free visa travel. They are not ready.

And this eventful and unstable Turkey competed with Japan for 2020 Olympic! No wonder it was not selected, relief to millions of prospective spectators.

If it makes you feel better to mock people, well then go ahead. It's not our fault you're a lemming heading for the cliffs.

"This part of the world"? Istanbul is 2400 thousand miles from Mecca and over a thousand miles from most of Mesopotamia or Jerusalem. Turkey's people are an entirely different ethnic group, it's language is different, it's geography is different, it's culture is different. Even its approach to Islam is very, very different.
Implying there is any kind of broader trend connecting Turkey to the Middle East makes about as much sense as trying to describe Parisians by referring to Ukrainian current events.

No, Lemmings must be herded off cliff by the likes of the talking heads or Walt Disney. But it doesn't make anyone smarter by accepting the BS of the talking heads.

katsu when i say "Coincidently most dominant religions originate from this part of the world", 'this' = the whole mediterranean region (including, as stated, the middle east) not Turkey!
Reading comprehension isn't your forte mate.

Just illustrates how wise Brexit is.

Ergodon is a pawn, he's not sure about where his loyalty lies anymore, but its obvious that he's supporting the CIA/Obama war to oust Assad. Why? To destabilize a region thats already destabilized. The war pigs always win when the masses are distracted with police and thieves.
goldorak
Huh? who implied that? I made a general statement about the situation (political, economical etc) in the Mediterranean region. This = Mediterranean basin. At no point did I mention Turkey.

Totally staged coup. Don't believe this for a second!

This a chance to take back secular Turkey from the islamist Erdogan. Alas, it was unsucessfull. And predictably, our deluded Western governments sided with the dictator Erdogan from the start. Madness all around.
lostrune2
The internet and social media that Erdogan has been trying to curtail.............. instead saved his ass.
The Turkey government and security forces aren't known for sharing info with the US regarding internal matters. But the US would rather have the devil they know than the devil they don't know if instability and chaos brings down the Turkey government. (The US also has a law that prevents them to have dealings with a coup that brings down a democracy.)

Nothing to do with Brexit.
