“They approach her and start grabbing her with their faces covered. They’re covering their faces. They’re in unmarked vehicles.”

Well this really sounds like a fascist state.

The arrest seems rather peaceful without any physical harm.

https://youtu.be/PuFIs7OkzYY?

That being said, the government still may not have sufficient grounds for the detention.

-20 ( +9 / -29 )

Why are federal agents hiding their faces? Send up some more lawsuits!

26 ( +34 / -8 )

Seeing this at first, I thought it was a scene from Russia, or China, but to see it happening in America, is disturbing. So basically, they started with dangerous gang members, then it moved to illegals with no criminal records, then it was legal immigrants who legal protest, now it is people here legally who are not active in any protests. What's next? Real citizens speaking out against the government?

31 ( +36 / -5 )

Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

32 ( +39 / -7 )

You are still free to criticize Hezbollah all you want.

Whatever happened to freedom of speech?

9 ( +17 / -8 )

In America, you cannot criticize Israel. That's the bottomline of freedom of speech. You know that AIPAC is "Big Brother" watching you.

Goodluck America under Trump's leadership !

11 ( +23 / -12 )

This is truly shocking and frightening? Never did I think I would witness these kind of KGB style abductions of people in plain daylight, but this is what it has come to. And since a slight majority of fools elected this madman, there is not a thing that can be done. And I fear it will get worse before the midterms and the next presidential election takes place, if it ever will!

24 ( +32 / -8 )

We’re the police,” members of the group saying in the video.

Gestapo of America ? Trump's style of American justice!

21 ( +29 / -8 )

Cant criticise Israel anymore.

Many groups watching for this, identifying students and protestors, and sending the info. to ICE.

Make no mistake, this sort of incident will empower the haters to abuse people of color on a daily basis. Same thing happened during the early stages of Covid, when Trump targeted China, which translated into bullying anyone of Asian descent.

Good point. Everything Trump does is to breed hate against a certain group of people. Like saying that Haitians are eating people's pets, or Mexican immigrants, whether they are illegal or not, as being rapists and murderers, have bred hate against anyone looking like that race.

11 ( +13 / -2 )

Trump's pro Zionist agenda was never hidden. People voted, this is democracy in action.

We don’t know why! What happened? Why? It’s like a kidnapping! Nobody knows!

“DHS and (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) investigations found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans.”

oh.

-23 ( +6 / -29 )

The new russia, welcome!!!

16 ( +18 / -2 )

found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans.

She criticized Israel's military campaign in Gaza. So did lots of others, including Jews. The Trump admin is equating that with supporting a terrorist organization.

Evil.

23 ( +26 / -3 )

Bass...calling Israels attacks on Gaza a genocide not an isolated or pro Hamas veiw.

How many NATIONS have called this out....how many UN resolutions ...how many international groups like Doctors without Borders and Red Cross....all calling for a stop.

No. The underlying theme in this story is Israeli influence way beyond the border of Israel.

We are seeing this in Australia where a Lebanese born artist was withdrawn from representing Australia at Venice art show....had previous work where images of Hamas leaders where present.

16 ( +18 / -2 )

“DHS and (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) investigations found Ozturk engaged in activities in support of Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization that relishes the killing of Americans.”

So basically they invent charges to arrest people. Yup, fascist state.

8 ( +12 / -4 )

She criticized Israel's military campaign in Gaza. So did lots of others, including Jews.

And there were reports about Jewish students being bullied, assaulted and verbally attacked, parents are telling their kids not to wear their Star of David. Protesting is one thing, these……people don’t have the right to intimidate other fellow students because they’re Jewish or their beliefs

The Trump admin is equating that with supporting a terrorist organization.

Baby steps, prevention is the key, particularly nowadays when the left has shown how violent they can be or to what limit they will go.

Evil.

Support for Hamas is evil.

-20 ( +3 / -23 )

Court have already ruled, their is no law against hating Jews or anyone,as long as you do not.violate their right, you have a right to.protest

If someone actually assaults someone else, then yes, they should be arrested. This student never assaulted anyone. We don't even have any proof yet that she protested or spoke out about an issue. Posting your opinions online is not considered a crime, at least not in the free world. Remember that America still has the right to free speech. Trump may take that away in the future, but as of now, we still have that right.

If someone actually assaults someone else, then yes, they should be arrested. This student never assaulted anyone.

Her speeches did alarm and worry Jewish students to a very significant degree.

We don't even have any proof yet that she protested or spoke out about an issue.

Seems like ICE has more intel than either of us.

Posting your opinions online is not considered a crime, at least not in the free world. Remember that America still has the right to free speech. Trump may take that away in the future, but as of now, we still have that right.

Again, you or I don’t know anything about this woman whether you are against this arrest or for it, but ICE does, let them sort it out, do I feel bad that she was arrested, going by her past anti-Jewish statements not really

-16 ( +2 / -18 )

The responses above show that the American hard right'd traditional defence of free speech is asymmetrical.

Thry defend their right to say hateful and bigotted things with impunity but they are happy to silence those who say things that they disagree with.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Remember that America still has the right to free speech. Trump may take that away in the future, but as of now, we still have that right.

Only in a constitional sence, but in a practical sense, those rights have been suspended by the regime.

4 ( +7 / -3 )

Hope, everybody has rights in America, due process

Bass you need to remind yourself of the free speech maxim

I may not agree with what you say but I will fight to the death for your right to say it "

Came out of the French Revolution , some has some lineage.

Pundits on the right previously said "people dont have a right NOT to be offended "...as this was a popular right wing claim.

Now, Jewish students "afraid to wear the Star of David " makes arresting non Jews OK ?

I didn’t say that and I’m all for free speech, but the fact of the matter is, Jewish students have been physically attacked assaulted, kicked out, blocked and denied access to many campuses, these students begged administrators to put an end to this because for fear of their personal safety and they did nothing in most cases that is equally not right and not acceptable.

As far as this detained student goes, I don’t know what ICE knows, so I can’t say anything other than, if ICE and immigration found a valid reason to arrest her how can I argue that that would be irresponsible, now if it is proven she did nothing wrong then release her, but supporting groups like Hamas or Hezbollah as a foreigner will definitely put you in the crosshairs of ICE no doubt about that.

-21 ( +0 / -21 )

Her speeches did alarm and worry Jewish students to a very significant degree.

If that's true, then Trump should be arrested. His speeches are often filled with hate and he often incites people to hate groups of people. He incited violent protesters on Jan. 6th. He incited people to violently attack Haitians and people who look Haitian. He incited people to attack Chinese, and people who look Chinese (basically all Asians) when he claimed that the Chinese should be blamed for Covid. He incited people to attack and discriminate against Hispanics when he claimed most of them are rapists and murderers. He even incites people to openly mock the disabled, and basically allow people to treat women the way he treats women.

12 ( +12 / -0 )

I'd just like to point it out going to a political protest as a foreigner in Japan can lead to the same fate so be careful out there.

I think the oldest case I remember is of an American deported for taking part in an anti-Vietnam war protest in Tokyo. If you plan to settle in Japan it's just not worth the risk, at least not until you naturalize, so you will finally be granted free speech without repercussions to your visa.

0 ( +6 / -6 )

As far as this detained student goes, I don’t know what ICE knows

That's weird, because you claimed that she made speeches that made Jewish students feel unsafe. Yet now you suddenly know nothing?

Hm.

Odd.

You should check with Germany , UK and other" free world" countries where pensioners are being investigated and charged for doing exactly just that.

Students on Visas in the US do not have citizenship rights. Public safety has always been a concern regarding such students, whether criminal, gang, terrorist or state sponsored 'spies' stealing IP etc.

Only under Biden Admin was non-issue because of open borders. But now under Trump Admin, law enforcement again taking public safety seriously, including at colleges.

US voters elected DJT in great part to reduce crime and increase public safety, including at colleges. As many colleges were badly disrupted in 2024 due to especially protests regarding Gaza War etc.

US law enforcement is trained to identify and deal with all public safety threats, including those on college campuses across the US, like ALL other countries. And now under Trump Admin they are again doing so.

-15 ( +3 / -18 )

The US is more like Russia every day. Don't go there for a holiday, and don't send your kids there to study.

9 ( +10 / -1 )

US becoming SAFER daily now unlike under Biden Admin crime skyrocketed, due to open borders and chaos in society, especially college campuses, given 2024 nationwide and often violent protests that erupted.

Most US Citizens want far greater public safety, a reason why they elected DJT. Trump Admin taking decisive action based on this mandate to improve US Public Safety

Law abiding Students with Visas should now feel SAFER!

-11 ( +2 / -13 )

If that's true, then Trump should be arrested.

The Dems tried that already and worse, been there and done that.

His speeches are often filled with hate and he often incites people to hate groups of people.

Hate for the left with good reason and talking truth to power about certain groups that have tried and are still trying to kill Americans.

He incited violent protesters on Jan. 6th.

You leave out the 3 month of Dem led Summer riots of 2020, just keep it within its proper context please.

He incited people to violently attack Haitians and people who look Haitian. He incited people to attack Chinese, and people who look Chinese (basically all Asians) when he claimed that the Chinese should be blamed for Covid.

Liberals incited attacks on conservatives, Maxine Waters told her base to hunt them down wherever they are even restaurants and tell them that they are not welcome anymore, Hollywood has pushed for hatred and even violence against conservatives from people like Chris Evans, John Cusack, Madonna and Johnny Depp, don't go there, libs cannot and will not claim that this is all about the right when the left have an even more atrocious history for inciting violence, and remember, we have more than enough video and audio to back it up. When conservatives boycott they just refuse to buy stuff like beer or not go to Disneyland, libs will destroy, set fires, rob, loot, yeah, don't go there. If you want to condemn an action of conservatives, then do it responsibly and do it invoking the other side as well.

He incited people to attack and discriminate against Hispanics when he claimed most of them are rapists and murderers.

Many are, look at all the women who lost loved ones over the last 4 years, even when Trump brought it up a few weeks ago, and mind you, the left caused this, they wouldn't even stand up when he spoke on honoring these slain women. No one is labeling all Hispanics, and even they know that because if they thought that Trump was inciting and racist, they would have never voted for him, the reason why Trump won was because it was Hispanics and Blacks who brought him over the finish line NOT Whites. so they know what he meant.

He even incites people to openly mock the disabled and basically allow people to treat women the way he treats women.

And yet, most of his cabinet are women, so if the left wants to attack him on that or the fact that the head of the treasury is the first openly gay appointed to that position, go for it, please. If I were a liberal, I would be finding ways how to help Americans and rebuild my party after such a massive shellacking and not waste my time on this admin.

Fascist apologists on here are cheering the destruction of democracy. America will reap what it sows, the rest of the world is watching. Russia and China are laughing at the bloated moron in charge and allies are working out ways to leave the US to its bigots and bullies. Pax Americana is dying and these brown shirts are too stupid to see it.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Bass....any evidence to support the "bullying of Jewish students " claim.

I have seen none....have seen some Israeli supporters bashing protesters on TV.

Also have seen "agent provocateur " Jewish female student standing outside a protest , calling the cops , saying " I feel threatened...I am a Jewish American..."

Methinks she doth protest too much.

Nah buddy...we are seeing some aspects of the Jewish lobby demanding silence from those that criticize Israel...and using law enforcement to do so.

I say careful...this can turn around and bite you on the butt.

8 ( +9 / -1 )

Funny how not even a month ago Eyeliner Vance was lecturing European freedom of speech.

Just another day in clown world.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

And there were reports about Jewish students being bullied, assaulted and verbally attacked

No evidence that she engaged in any of that type of behavior has been presented. The only thing she is being targeted for is co-writing an opinion piece that was critical of Israel.

10 ( +10 / -0 )

If this practice keeps up, those "masked kidnappers" - whoever they are - are going to end up getting shot dead. It would likely be warranted, too.

America is now a dangerous, fascist state. You'd be insane to visit or go there to study.

Remember: to MAGA, freedom of speech does not mean you can criticize the government. They hate that. They hate people voicing political views they disagree with.

To them, freedom of speech means "I can say racial slurs on Twitter."

This is an article about politicians disagreeing with the Biden admin. Which they are allowed to do, as they have (or rather, had, until Trump) freedom of speech.

The article you are commenting on is about a legal resident and student being arrested for thinking bad thoughts.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

Students on Visas in the US do not have citizenship rights.

Everyone in the US has the same rights to free speech. Doesn’t matter who you are or where you are from, that’s guaranteed.

The fact is, MAGA wants “free speech” but only for them. They give themselves license say hateful things and incite violence, and they’ll try to shield themselves with “Oh this is free speech! The libs are taking away my freedoms!!!!”

But when they get caught ACTUALLY suppressing free speech? “Well, you don’t have a right to say it because we don’t like it.”

Real peak consistency here, guys.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

Legal residents voicing harmless opinions is actually good for the USA.

But not naturalized American citizens, right?

-14 ( +3 / -17 )

Express

Supporting terrorism and targeting other religious people is not harmless. The woman was there to study not incite hatred and promote terrorist groups.

-13 ( +2 / -15 )

Supporting terrorism and targeting other religious people is not harmless. The woman was there to study not incite hatred and promote terrorist groups.

Can you prove she did so? By the way: saying that Israel should not be perpetrating a genocide (which it is) is not the same as supporting terrorism.

9 ( +9 / -0 )

But not naturalized American citizens, right?

Yes, they also have freedom of speech. Or they should. But Donald Trump and MAGA want people disagreeing with them to be arrested.

8 ( +10 / -2 )

And to think he was going to be a dictator for one day only. This looney-tunes landslide of ukazes from "Big Gub'mint Daddy" is adding another meaning to MAGA , like, "Make Amerika Gestapo Again". Before our very eyes a pariah state is being born on the ashes of Gaza.

Why would a naturalized citizen be treated differently from one born in the US?

8 ( +8 / -0 )

Students on Visas are there contingent upon good behavior. They have no fundamental right to be in the US, no special protections.

Student Visa holders right to attend school fully depends upon abiding by all laws, including not disrupting others' ability to attend class, promote violence or support known groups deemed national security threats etc.

Yeah, no. Visas are not contingent on “good behavior”. They have been granted the right to study in the U.S. Crticizing the government of Israel is nor disrupting anyone’s ability to attend class, and it is not promoting violence or supporting any terrorist groups.

She was a signatory to a Uni magazine letter calling on the Uni to recognise the Gaza war as a genocide.

Now, she is a national threat to the USA.

If Americans dont care about the rights of people with different views, it is a poor image of a democracy

11 ( +11 / -0 )

She was in the United States on an F1 student visa. She had no entitlement to stay in the country and the US government was well within its rights to terminate her visa based on her support of the terrorist group Hamas. It is commonsense as the spokesperson stated. Ms. Ozturk will go back to Turkey and we wish her well in her future endeavors outside of this country.

-15 ( +1 / -16 )

In case it's not obvious to you by now, Trump has no intention of obeying the constitution or any law. Courts are blocking some of his illegal actions, or at least trying to. The administration has already lost more than 50 federal cases. But in the end, the only way to stop him is impeachment. Now, keeping in mind that trying to overthrow the results of the 2020 election wasn't enough, ask yourself, what would Trump have to do to get 20 Republican senators to convict him?
