The housekeeper is the victim here, not Khobragade, and certainly not India.

I have not been able to find other examples of a host nation arresting a diplomat without obtaining client nations consent first. Including crimes like murder and torture. For serious crimes there have been a variety of other reactions: negotiating, complaint, issuing an arrest warrant without actually arresting, expelling a diplomat. Where these other options never considered and discussed with the State Dept and Presidents office? I see two problems here: (1) Inability to differentiate between uchi and soto, (2) Approaching issues in an uncoordinated and impulsive manner instead of through sufficient internal discussion and deliberation.

CraigHicks, let's look under the cover,,, Who is the US Attorney that's pressing the charges,,, Oh, let me spell the name Preet Bharara oh my ! now Goggle and get the background,,, Welcome, to America Madam Khobragade ,, I hope the courts lock your high maintenance act for Years ! Liar, and slave runner, wow, you need another strip search, and printing oh that's right you will get that during in processing... I venture to say Playing the dip immune trick game with the UN will not work"" All you are doing is upsetting the US Attorney" This is not India where the Rich have ways and means.. No, US Attorney's are free and work on programs already agreed to and sanctioned by the Dept. of Justice.. Plus, that fact that Preet Bharara is Indian American, who clearly understand Indian culture. That's why he targeted the case to the Indian diplomat, in the first place. Oh Girl, needs to lay down and cop a plea Bamg ! And that's just the way it Is

Superlib the maid is the perp. By removing her family 2 days before the arrest shows the maid is an us asset. I believe her entire family charged with extortion and possibly treason. The US people in India lose their special privileges. It only a matter of time before these "diplomats" get arrested for spying on India and homosexual activity. This is still in the beginning. Oh I ca hear President Putin laugh about the crazy Americans.

The US should have nothing to say about her UN papers. They are a country to themselves and USA just host.

Shame to anyone who broke or abusing the law, especially diplomat corps who suppose to show the high standard.

India is pushing this case to a wrong side. Her immunity, if granted, will not erase what she has done. Human trafficking is a serious federal offense and she is guilty. We have to start listening to our conscience and we have to do what is fair and just for a humanity. If humanity is not important, what else is more important folks?

Should be a straight cut case.

Since she doesn't have full diplomatic immunity (levels vary according to duties and position) she is liable regardless of her status in India.

Sorry, but you got follow the law of where you are living. None of the workers I know at my embassy got any legal protection.

globalwatcher and It's Me, tell me what has been gained by the USA? The maid was not being held again her will. My guess this is all a ruse to allow her and family to enter the USA. So lets look at the gains, yes it showed the burden of the foreign maid in the USA. However the US diplomat in India have lost their special privileges. They now enjoy the same limited protections of their counterparts in the USA. The American families lost their ID cards. The American families are under investigation of working on the side against the rules. India is very upset with the USA and no they will not calm down by condescending remarks from the US government. I think they are no longer friends of America, Since it showed how brutal the USA can be to diplomats, I would say other countries are upset and will be taking away privilege from American diplomats in their countries.

So this is a big American victory?

So this is a big American victory?

No, you have a different mind set. What US tried to do is a social justice. Just because they are diplomats that do not give them a free ticket to commit unlawful acts. Simple.

The maid was paid about 1560 a month and given free room, phone calls and other perks.
