I just had a flash from one of those nature shows about wolves or something:

"The Alpha male strides confidently through the pack, maintaining order and occasionally staring down a potential usurper..."

Nothing new and biz as usual. I did my days on the Indy and KH... was always doing drills and exercises (cruise) in the these regions... We have been doing this since the mid 40s. Every time someone lobs a missile (over Taiwan 90s) or throws a punch the whole battle group deploys. I would be terrified to live in Asia if the USN packed up and left.

It will likely reassure the jittery smaller nations of Washington's support in their tussles with China

Vietnam has never had any qualms about tussling with China.

The US Navy just wants to show that real carriers actually have planes.

Humor aside, methinks messages are being sent and some recent and ill-advised policy is hopefully under review in Beijing.

Be smart China and back off.

May be China should start patrol near US coasts ? Why not ?

Why not? Because China's Navy doesn't have a vast history for humanitarian aid to other countries. The U.S. Navy does.

That answer your question?

5 ( +5 / -0 )

This is no need for anyone to get their undies in a bunch. I'd wager the GW strike group will do an exercise before hitting some ports (most likely Hong Kong) to do some Christmas shopping. The U.S. Navy has been doing that for years.

Olegek: May be China should start patrol near US coasts ? Why not ?

Patrol? The US is using a heavily used route that many ships pass through. To get a real comparison you'd have to assume the US extends it's claim to half the Pacific and claims China is "patrolling" the US anytime they enter the waters.

3 ( +5 / -2 )

@techall

So true. The Chinese don't have much luck there, do they?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I think US should concentrate on South East Asia and Asia Pacific region. Communist Chinese Government is in very aggressive manner toward Asia Pacific and South East Asia countries. Communist Chinese leaders don't respect International Law and Communist leaders are crazy enough to claim all coastal lines and Islands in Asia Pacific and South East Asia region. Only US can deter Communist China occupying Islands in these regions.

I would be stunned if the PRC navy could make it as far as Hawaii before it turned back because their old tin cans started falling apart.

When I pulled into QuinDao, we passed the PRC submarine fleet. At first everything looked OK, but when we turned a corner, we could see that they had only painted the outboard part of their subs. The half of the sub that was pierside was all rusty and beat to crap.

It would be a very difficult proposition to get me on a fully functional submarine, and there's no way in hell I would have deployed on any of the subs I saw that day. They looked from the inside, like the mooring lines were keeping them afloat.

Granted, this is more than a few years ago.

It's quite funny to see our Russian comrades cheering on the Chinese "navy" in light of their American inferiority complex.

Has the Russian fleet finally been weighed in for scrap metal or something?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

"The U.S. Navy regularly patrols the Asia-Pacific region, and the trip by the George Washington off the coast of Vietnam is its second in two years."

So it's not really newsworthy....

Well - don't you think it's about time. . . That is what US is occupying Okinawa for. . . .

0 ( +4 / -4 )

Do not see a problem, China just sent a group of warships much closer to Japan than the Carrier force approached Red China. Perhaps they should sail 15 nm off of the coast of Red China just outside of their national waters.

OlegekOct. 20, 2012 - 03:17PM JST America sent a nuclear-powered aircraft carrier on a cruise through the South China Sea May be China should start patrol near US coasts ? Why not ?

The PRC will sent it's mighty fishing fleet to show the US the true nature of might?

OlegekOct. 20, 2012 - 03:17PM JST The U.S also wants to send a message to the region that it is here for the long haul .... and that it wants to back up international law.” Exactly !! international law - this is what Latin America really need (supported by China Navy )

The PRC fleet, are you refering to the Carrier that does not hold any planes?

I would be stunned if the PRC navy could make it as far as Hawaii before it turned back because their old tin cans started falling apart.

@canadianbento:

Here we go again, the U.S. sticking their nose in somone elses business

Vietnam is pleased to accept help from its one-time foe America as a hedge against its giant neighbor China

Guess you didn't see that part.

US "flexing its muscles"?

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

-1 ( +3 / -4 )

How many Ospreys are hidden below? Since they can't reach any island in the dispute from Okinawa, this will keep them nearer.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

Hey look PRC an Air Craft Carrier that actually has planes on it!

Wow, isn't a real navy great!

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

we must not pity the so called and so colded super china , look at its attitude and see how it is proud its self to not respect the international law of sea , lol , idiot is idiot , china taste japan shit is not different from what it let the asean to taste its own . china ' dream is coming true real soon if china does little more to give the rest of the world enough of evidence of CHINA BULLYING , ROBBING , KILLING THE SMALLER NEIGHBORS IN SOUTH CHINA SEA . remember this , made in china is lowest quality , so pictures of china navy is real and originally made in china lol , its just 4 frightening the smaller

Reformed The US Navy just wants to show that real carriers actually have planes.

China also have planes on the mainland - and US NAVY coming too close...

Humor aside, methinks messages are being sent and some recent and ill-advised policy is hopefully under review in Beijing.

Whole world shaking with fear ...

Be smart China and back off.

Otherwise ? U.S. will not pay its debt to Chinese National bank?

You will be supprised - near US coast runs a lot "a heavily used route that many ships pass through. "

Nippon_BanzaiOct. 20, 2012 - 06:57PM JST Just showing off! and if war came we are not committed.

You should really stop listening to PRC propaganda and start looking at some real news. Did you know that Iraq thought the same thing back in 90 when he attack Kuwait, and see where he is now.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

There is nothing known as 'flesing muscles' but a demonstration of 'cowardices'! You know the shame done by two US sailors of sexual assaulting a Japanese lady in Okianwa last week, a make shift 'coverup' of their embarassment'! The US aircraft carrier is no match if it came close to Hainan island, there is a wasp nest of submarines' out there! When we captured the EP3 spyplane back in 2001, the US navy was no where to make a silly attempt to rescue their crews!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

Beijing to establish a garrison on one of the Paracel islands, which Vietnam also claims. The United States also criticized the move by Beijing

And what can those two buddies could do? Nothing!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The U.S also wants to send a message to the region that it is here for the long haul ....

Curfewing your sailors before talks tough, otherwise will be a great embarassment again!

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

The US Marines come in their own ships. THE PRC does not have any of these as well. If the PRC fleet engages the US Fleet the fish will dine well. The aircraft and ships will sink larger targets and the helicopters will kill the small ones.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Hard to believe, isn't it? The US just backed down from China. Big time. Scared? Maybe.

We played naval games around Guam last week showing our military might to China. Then we arranged joint maneuvers with Japan on the re-taking of a Japanese island in the event that an "enemy" chose to occupy it militarily, which was all a big what-if regarding the Senkaku islands. China countered by sending in its North China Sea fleet into the vicinity of Okinawa, a little more than a hundred kilometers from the contested islands of Senkaku.

Guess what? After all that saber-rattling around Guam and our moving in two aircraft carrier battle groups into the South China Sea and the East China Sea, we...we...we backed down. China called our bluff, and we were forced to call off the joint maneuvers with Japan, signalling that we weren't going to contest the taking of the Senkakus by China, if it so wished to do so.

Of course, we got Noda to call it off so that we would save face, but he's a good boy and does what we tell him. Now Japan knows that it's on its own in defending the Senkakus. And Japan desperately needs the Senkakus for its oil and gas deposits, since it has none of its own and is fast removing its nuclear reactors as a source of energy. Japan can't back down without admitting how weak it really is, and it can't go forward without China's acquiescence. It could be war, and Japan would lose...if it stood alone.

But, this is the game that China is playing. If China magnanimously gives the Senkakus to Japan, then Japan enters China's economic and military orbit. Since the US has already signaled that there is a real possibility that we will not honor our commitment to protect Japan, does Japan really have any other option but to fall in line with China. And then, the other dominoes fall. Vietnam is probably next, following the same strategy of contesting an island group and then magnanimously offering them up. Then the Philippines. Taiwan is virtually gone from the American orbit already, since they're fast remembering that they're Chinese and need the mainland Chinese market. South Korea is next. And, finally the US is out of the South China Sea.

This is a Cold War that America seems set to lose...if...if...if we let China be magnanimous by letting Japan have the Senkakus. However, that's the Chinese game, not ours. What if we can keep China from giving up their claim to the Diaoyu Island group? What then?

They are not called junk's because they look good, they are called that because that is one one of the prerequisites of being part of the mighty PRC fishing fleet.!

Tremble in fear, the mighty PRC fleet is on the move.

Dare I say, Davy Jones has built a parking spot for them and is waiting for them with a smile on his face.

The might PRC fleet will become the next great reef for divers if it make the mistake of beliving it's own nations propaganda!
