Lol this is the only thing the US ever does in Asia. If you do something bad i will fly a plane near you that will show them! This does nothing but waste Americans tax dollars.

Should have flown them over North Korea. I think it would have been more impressive.

And show them they did. You must be very naive to think North Korea will be swayed by anything other than a show of force.

by the way, did you actually. literally laugh out loud when reading this rather common story? Why?

And show them they did.

Nah, I think testing nukes is more of a show of force than flying bombers around. NK-1 US-0 ;)

I see. So the United States should detonate a nuke somewhere?

North Koreans are going to be eating shoe leather soup to stay alive this winter. Did you factor that into your cute little scorecard? ;) happy winky-wink face!

What they should do is quietly, calmly and without any explanation start amassing a huge invasion force along the DMZ with mass carrier groups close to the shore, then announce tactical nukes are being deployed in South Korea and that business as usual has ended for lil kim and the Norks....watch the hysterics and panic then. Also tell China and Russia that if they won't sort it out then they can STFU and watch the firework show.

Ok, to recap, dharmadan proposes to "quietly" amass hundreds of thousands of troops along the border with out NK knowing. And with South Korea's permission and involvement even though it could mean their destruction. How is this done?

Then in a worst-case scenario, you have triggered a nuclear exchange with both N.K. and her ally China. The American west coast is known to be within range. Is that in The U.S.'s best interest?

In a best-case scenario, you have greatly de-stabalized an already delicate region and pissed off not only the region, but your own allies around the world as a bully. Diplomacy and American prestige are damaged for decades.

Now what?

The North will not be shaken by such action coming from the U.S. Hit the North where it really hurts.

I pity those poor little indoctrinated kids having to swear allegiance to the flag every morning.

now this just proves why north korea needs to escalate its nukes..... agressive neighbours...now suppose the us chose to start a dialog instead..... would that be cause for alarm? after all it is the united states who left the peninsular in this state of war....just saying is all.

"after all it is the united states who left the peninsular in this state of war.."

Yes, it's all the United States' fault that Korea hasn't been unified under the Kim Dynasty all these years.

Ronald Hassem - I believe your grasp of current events is about as bad as your grasp of history.

just saying is all...

South Korea has to detonate a nuke test of their own. Once the North realizes that the South has nukes of their own, then the North would double-think that they have an advantage with having nukes.

-2 ( +1 / -3 )

Wow and it's not like they can use nuclear weapons.

NK can't even deliver 1 so nuclear war will only happen if NK blows them up on the border. Even then they can't just nuke a city because they blow up a bomb on the border.

America is just costing people their lives, by halting food supply's for the poor. Look now and have the people turned on him or will they? NO they are not and never will.

We might as well hand them back 50% of their economy, if they don't make anymore bombs and ship it out way before hand like the Iran deal.

All i see is war and America needs to understand that war brings technology and people working and testing new weapons on the enemy's best. Allowing war will bring them on par.

now suppose the us chose to start a dialog instead.

Ronald Hassem - the US, alongside their partners Japan and South Korea have been asking for a dialogue with North Korea for years. The N. Koreans have replied with nothing but bellicose rhetoric while illegally starting a nuclear program and providing terrorist states with arms.

after all it is the united states who left the peninsular in this state of war....just saying is all.

fundamentally false. the US led United Nation saved South Korea from being overrun in the Korean War. It is the North Koreans who have refused to sign an armistice.

"by the way, did you actually. literally laugh out loud when reading this rather common story? Why?"

The result of ..... anxiety... perhaps.

oblique weapons has an interesting idea, and it is sobering. "Give them 50% of their GNP and...."

I think some numbers might sober some people up here and show the value of sanctions vs. war. A B-2 bomber costs about 2 billion dollars. You can think about costs of all the necessary planning and materials necessary to fight a war, even just a standard bombing campaign against North Korea. What do you think? Will the war cost 100 billion? Could it get up to 200 billion? And what are the odds that the war is going to solve whatever problems completely without creating new ones? Anywhere from 0 to 100% really, but either is certainly possible.

The NK GDP is 17 billion dollars per year. They work hard and scratch away and that is about the best they have been able to do for over a decade. That is it.

So the US would have to spend as much as 10 years GDP of that nation to change its regime. The Chinese can spend a few billion each year (US aid to Israel each year is 3--4 billion dollars at least) and have some influence on what happens in NK. I bet the Chinese pay them peanuts for the influence they get. Less than a billion, probably.

Put all that together and sanctions seem to make sense. War is unlikely to be "worth the effort" and certainly not "worth the risk" for the US. It seems much more likely that the US can influence affairs by putting a few billion dollars here and there over time, or enforcing sanctions at a fraction of that cost. If the problem is manageable, manage it. And it also explains Kim's hijinks for the last few years. He just wants more money.

re: The B-1B bombers, escorted by U.S. and South Korean jets, were seen by an Associated Press photographer as they flew over Osan Air Base, which is 120 kilometers (75 miles)

Was this an air show? hmmm I could have sworn there were food booths set up. Seriously75 miles away is not a show of force, cruising along the DMZ or right over NK is a show of force, that is what China or Russia would do. Obama's administration like the ending of the Roman Empire was to talk everyone to death...

Obama's administration like the ending of the Roman Empire was to talk everyone to death...

bjohnson23 - Im a bit of a history buff but for all the reasons why the Roman Empire fell, thats the first Ive heard of too much talk. Can you elaborate?

And since flying over the DMZ would be seen as a provocation of war, and result in a possible missile launch by the North Koreans, would that appease you?

Or perhaps maybe, .......you haven't really thought about reality and the consequences like so many chickenhawks?

"MsDeliciousSEP. 13, 2016 - 11:36AM JST Should have flown them over North Korea. I think it would have been more impressive." --- Indeed.

-1 ( +0 / -1 )

And yet again, until China stops propping up the North, it will not fall. And China will never cease to prop up the North, so long as US bases are in the South.

That much is obvious. It is the status quo for over 60 years.

BUT

North Korea is going nuclear. And it appears nothing can be done to stop it. Because neither the US nor China are willing to give up on the satus quo.

Flying a" Supersonic" B-1 Bomber as a show of force......you BET it got Fat Boi's attention.....and had every radar station in the country on alert. .And for all those "LOLs", it's obvious you are TRULY unaware of this plane's capability.....MULTI -MISSILES CAN BE LAUNCHED IN SECONDS.....far exceeding TODAY anything the NK will have in the next century... The thrust of its engines alone can make the ground tremble on its approach for 10 miles, and scatter windows as its passes overhead; a bit more than firing a few scuds and "dead fishing" for NK fishing industry. LOL....
