The way they have been pressing al-Maliki on this, despite the agreement for withdrawal already made, I am surprised they did not bring in a marine to get him in an arm bar and ask him if he wants to rethink the deal.

I wonder if Obama is thinking he might need these troops at home to crack down on the American Spring?

It was very clear the US military has defeated in iraq, those Sadrists still holding influences over the Iraqi government!

The decision to pull out fully by January will effectively end more than eight years of U.S. involvement in the Iraq war

Invading Iraq was the worst strategic decision in the history of the United States.

No thanks to Ex prezidente Bush for bogging the USA down in this mess! Instead of just going after Saddam Hussein and his cronies now we have a horrible mess, a huge pandoras box and I am sure the Iranians next door are none too sad to see the USA having to retreat from Iraq, the Iraqis at each others throats, boy next door in Teheran they must be getting to start celebrating in the streets, since it was the CIA who had made Saddam Hussein who he was and helped him in his war against Iran for almost 8 years. What would Homer Simpson do in this situation??? Think brain! Think!

As much as I agree with the sentiment behind that, I think Afghanistan and Vietnam were worse strategically. But of course it depends largely on what you mean by strategic. If the strategy was to get rich and get your buddies rich, for some it was genius strategy.

All US combat troops were pulled out in Aug. 2010, but the bloodshed continues.

Bush Jr hates the Saddams, remember back in Nov.1992 when Bush Sr lost his re-election to be the next president of US and Saddam declared victory to his people! He drew a pistol and firing atthe sky when the crowds rejoiced over him! That was the greatest humilation to the Bushs and the whole world were watching in TV ! Bush Jr sweared to revenge Saddam's humilations and he made it! Even there was no 911, Bush Jr will invade Iraq to topple the saddams with or without evidences Iraq is a threat back then! The war was totally a 'personal issue' instead a national threat or anything related with anti-terrorisms! Those 4400 US servicemen and srvicemen of other countries who lost their lives were expensdables, they were dying for a stupid 'cause'! The Iraq war was bad for US,UK but good for China, Russia, North Korea, Iran! Operation iraqi freedom:The biggest laugh stock ever in 21century!

I think Dick Cheney will lash out something very 'unfriendly' over President Obama very soon in TV!

You based US victory on whether or not the Sadrist held influence over the iraqi government?

I think Afghanistan and Vietnam were worse strategically.

How is Afghan worse than Iraq?

Shades of Vietnam.

No doubt the US will leave spouting platitudes about democracy etc and then the real endgame will begin. The invasion of Iraq, built on lies, was the worst foriegn escapade that the US has ever embarked on (and that's saying something).. Still, at least they avenged 9-11.......oh, hang on, at least they avenged.......ummmm, something. Saddam was a bad bad man and Iraq and the world are safer without him.

Is that how it goes?

Mostly stupid political comments.

How is Afghan worse than Iraq?

Well, for starters, it prompted the Taliban to take over parts of Pakistan, a nuclear armed country. Next, the fight is older than Iraq with far less to show for it. Next, Pakistan may never have been a great ally, but they move more toward being an enemy every day. At least we can say most actual combat has ended in Iraq, though I cannot think the cost in lives in blood or treasure was ever worth it.

The US Army hasn't trained any Iraqi trainers to train their own troops by this time? Geez.

How about letting Iraq worry about Iraq. I think the US has done more than enough there already - not a lot of it good.

means a lot less stress on the American troops, now Afghanistan is left. Most Americans think effort there is good money after bad.

I still can't believe Obama made Sen. Hillary Clinton his Sec of State. She voted for regime change and invasion.

Politics is not an easy game to play, politicians do one thing to get elected and then another to follow their hearts, but I do agree with Mr.Obama, time to get out but at the same time, the USA must make sure to keep the Iranians out of Iraq, maybe leave troops on the Iraq/Iran border just in case our amigos in Teheran get any funny ideas IMHO.
