Might be a way for John "Where's my scotch?" Boehner to save face and allow the government to reopen.

So this is about denying 30 million citizens healthcare in the richest country in the world that is in massive debt? To prove a point government workers and their families suffer. Guarantee congress are still being paid and their health care. Disingenuous, morally corrupt are tems that come to mind.

10 ( +11 / -1 )

Yup, this is the extreme that the Republicans will go to deny affordable health care to the American people. It goes to show what monsters American conservatives are. The most reactionary Japanese politicians would not even consider doing something like this.

7 ( +10 / -3 )

Schumer said crafting such a massive package while government is shut down “is virtually an impossibility.” This is a huge tip off that a deal can be made.

Today's US Congress is not the US Congress that voted for Obamacare; far from it. One Congress cannot incumber a subsequent Congress. In fact, Obamacare itself is today not what it was when passed because of all the unfair exemptions that President Obama has issued to his cronies. This fight will again land in the Supreme Court of The United States when a group of ordinary citizens form a class big enough to have standing on the unequal-protection-under-the-law clause of The Constitution. The claim that the ACA law is "The Law of The Land" is specious; Slavery was the "Law of The Land" and decreed constitutional by the Supreme Court of The United States too during a dark period of US History, but it too was vanquished.

The people of the US will fight one another on the debt ceiling but, rest assured, its bills will be paid. Do not believe the Democrat President's scare tactics. He is a bully. He does not have the ability to negotiate. In the end he will loose this fight and the American People will be victorious over their elected officials' Big Government.

All republicans fault? Union exemptions for ACA. Senate and Congress exemptions. Unions are in the Democrats front pocket. Senate is Democrat controlled. If its not good enough or too costly for these people what about the general population? Many cant afford it.

-8 ( +2 / -10 )

Many cant afford it.

I can understand if they are physically and mentally disabled because they cannot earn income. Other than that, tell them to get a job so that they can afford it. No more free loader mentality, please. What you guys do not realize about Obamacare is that we no longer obligated to take uninsured coming to emergency room. It is constitutional to refuse them at the door. No insurance, no treatment, period.

“This isn’t some damn game,” boomed House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress

Right. This is about the Republican party keeping themselves together for a little while longer, and dragging the rest of the US and the world behind the bumper during the process.

All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion

Hey John.....why not put a clean CR bill up for vote? Oh, that's right. You'd lose and your party would be fractured. Good for America, bad for Republicans.....so it won't happen.

All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion

Right. A discussion and a "compromise" on whether something will continue to be a law or won't. Because you can find so much middle ground there. Maybe it should be 78% a law? Maybe a law on even days? What did Republicans have in mind?

MarkG: All republicans fault? Union exemptions for ACA. Senate and Congress exemptions. Unions are in the Democrats front pocket. Senate is Democrat controlled. If its not good enough or too costly for these people what about the general population? Many cant afford it.

No, Mark. You have been wrong an absurd number of times about the realities on the ground that I can only assume you don't care and your job is to spit fire whether it's true or not. You are not a man of free will.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

This is what I have always been talking about. You want to cause havoc and or try to kill people, you don't need a gun to do it, you can use for example like this woman her car and use it as a weapon, she could've put explosives in it or she could have used her car as a diversion for a secondary attack

A bunch or armed, trigger-happy cowards fell into panic and killed an unarmed woman. No one tried to block her Infinity by police car or shoot tires. All talks concerning to "her mentally unstable condition" are part of well-known operation Cover Your Arse.

“All we’re asking for is to sit down and have a discussion, reopen the government and bring fairness to the American people under ‘Obamacare,’”

Boehner, you should know that it is longstanding US policy not to negotiate with terrorists. Be a man and control the Tea Party zealots in your own caucus.

The whole idea of a debt ceiling is a farce. How can the president spend money he doesn't have, and also hasn't made provision to borrow? I can't go to a car dealer and say, "hey, give me a car. I'll arrange the loan next year". I understand that the gov't may need to borrow money at times, but the time to arrange the financing is BEFORE spending the money, not after.

As for the ACA, it seems to have been less than wonderful so far. The president and his cronies were tampering with it and giving exceptions to their friends before it was even implemented.

-8 ( +5 / -13 )

@Technosphere With all due respect, I'm not sure we're reading the same news. From what I got she did indeed ram police cars and barricades. Of course after the fact we know she is an unarmed mother, possibly on drugs or delusional. At the time of the chase for all the police knew she could have been carrying bombs.

The buck stop with Obama. He neither shows leadership nor flexibility to end government shutdown, rather using this opportunity for political advantages. The ACA was passed with arm twisting politics and the supreme court with only one more vote majority allowed to survive under the disguise of tax law. There is a better way to provide healthcare to all without abusing the system. The same token for budget impasse and the debt ceiling. Senator Obama opposed the debt ceiling, by calling "unpatriotic"; and now he is doing just that - what would he call himself now? They all play games at the cost of tax money for generation to come. It seems "image" means a lot to most, even though it is "superficial" !

What would Jesus say? Aren't Republicans big Jesus fans. Would Jesus approve of the denial of health care, the withholding of salary. ..I might have read about a different Jesus? Btw never heard of Jesus carrying a gun either.

In negotiation basics, the ONE thing not to do is issue the precondition that the issue at hand is non-negotiable. "My way or the Highway" is not negotiation but dictation.

What the republicans has managed to do is to re-introduce slavery to the US. What would you call forcing people to work with no pay? All those people protecting the congress are not being paid. The Capital Police office in the hospital was not being paid. All the remaining people keeping the US safe from threats at the NSA, etc. are not being paid. Wha't is left of NASA to watching over the International space station are not being paid. The people at the Pacific Tsunami warning center are not being paid. The people at NOAA and the Hurricane warning center are not being paid. There is a hurricane approaching this weekend. Fema had Furloughed 90% of its staff but had to call back 70% for this weekend hurricane but either way they are not being paid. The Republicans did it last time and they did it this time again. Last time they lost both the Senate and the House. What do you think will happen this time?

“The American people don’t want their government shut down and neither do I,”

Perhaps and morons like Cruz should have thought of that before literally ENCOURAGING Republicans to shut it down, then, no?

5 ( +6 / -1 )

The partisan argument is pointlessly futile. Call them all Dembumblicans or Repugnocrats if you like but the problem is the reckless spending by both.

Raising the debt ceiling allows the government to pay bills it already racked up.

But it clears the way for the government to keep passing in-the-red budgets, and in due time bump up against the newly raised debt ceiling once more. In other words, raising the credit limit practically guarantees the country will max out the credit card again.

And while the 2013 projected deficit is thankfully under $1 trillion for the first time since 2008, it is still higher than it was at any point during the George W. Bush administration, when Democrats complained about unsustainable deficits.

Both are equally guilty.

Mr. Cruz has earned a new name today. A male version of Sarah Palin with a big lipstick.

This can all stop if the US simply places a ceiling on how much a party and individual can spend on elections since present day election are a huge money guzzling event which requires large amounts of donations giving leverage to pressure groups and big corporations influence to each party's stance on various issues.

Politicians wants a seat in the next term. For that to happen they need large amount of contributions to hold a large campaign to be noticed. Large contributions has various strings attached on various issues. Once obtaining a seat they vote on issues that may not be popular amoungst the populous to satisfy contributors. That polititian needs more money to regain publics opinion to his favor in his next campaign. It's basically a vicious cycle with no end.

The new GOP talking points are in! They change every 48-72 hours and their supporters spread the word.

Exceptions: "The president and his cronies were tampering with it and giving exceptions to their friends." You'll hear that from Congressmen as well. Pretty popular recently.

Obama's quote: "Senator Obama opposed the debt ceiling, by calling "unpatriotic"" On the decline but still around.

Negotiate: The hot mic caught Paul planning to use this over and over. "In negotiation basics". That, and compromise.

Both are equally guilty: This is in it's prime but will probably die down soon. --> "Call them all Dembumblicans or Repugnocrats if you like but the problem is the reckless spending by both."

Obama owns this: "The buck stop with Obama." An up-and-comer. You'll be hearing it more over the next couple of days.

“This isn’t some damn game,” boomed House Speaker John Boehner.

Question: Then why is he and the GOP insisting on dragging their foolishness out for international mirth? They have lost. The longer they remain recalcitrant with their folly the worse for the American people. Vote wisely in the next elections. This isn't the first time the Republican Party has taken the government to ransom. Unless they are taught to respect good old American morality they will never learn and will continue their antics with all future governments to get their selfish interests met.

Serrano: "Could you leave TEPCO out of this? And it's the Democrats who need a change of ideology."

Both need to change SOME things, that's for sure but the Republicans most certainly take the cake -- I mean, they can't even control their IN-FIGHTING!

Both are equally guilty.

So are you saying that we all need to be thrown into pool and get drawn? You know some cannot swim.

I think we all need to realize we have a serious political crisis in US democracy. As I said before that Obamacare has been passed, signed into law, and upheld by the Supreme Court. Furthermore, this President was elected TWICE. I hope you recognized all these legal steps involved in the past.

However, small minority members among Republicans (Tea Party) are still doing everything they can to fight the law. They are denying all US political process. That's why they are all called Anarchists by Harry Reid, and I do not blame him at all. They deserve that. So what do we do about them? Yes, that's our responsibility to remember them all at next election booth.

Here is a list of Tea Party members. You can click on your state to find out who they are. And I bet you will be surprised.

This fight will again land in the Supreme Court of The United States.

Obamacare was already validated by the SCOTUS. Maybe Fox news did not report that. Typical.

The fact is the republican party has been captured by a small minority of delusional terrorists from the Tea Party. In fact the Tea Party is a front for the billionaire libertarian group headed up by the super rich Koch brothers. Funding for the tea party comes from them. They want healthcare for themselves but not for others that are not billionaires like themselves.

Osamu Bin Laden, if Obama had not killed him, would be praising the republican party for doing the same thing he wanted to do, destroy the USA.

The District of Cronies. This shutdown couldn't come at a better time. It is a perfect distraction and way to create the necessary volatility and just enough fear, just enough chaos for the bankers to work behind the scene to pilfer from the Americans. Because of the shutdown we're gonna see a massive run from real estate to the bond market. The IRS is not able to verify W2 forms, you need these forms to get a mortgage, home equity loan, or anything that has to do with purchasing a house. For now all of a sudden the bond rate goes down, precious metals down and the bankers are making a windfall in profits.

Pelosi: "it's very hard to negotiate with the Republicans when they can't negotiate with themselves."

Quote of the Day

"This mess was created by the Republicans for one purpose, and they lost. People in my district are calling in for Obamacare—affordable health care—in large numbers. These guys have lost, and they can’t figure out how to admit it.” Why would House Democrats give away what the Supreme Court and the 2012 electorate didn’t? “You can’t say, OK, you get half of Obamacare—this isn’t a Solomonic decision,” McDermott said. “So we sit here until they figure out they [expletive] lost.”

The House has already passed a bill to guarantee no debt default - the Full Faith & Credit Act. The Senate refuses to discuss it.

The House also just voted to pay federal workers what they're owed even during the shutdown. The Senate is likely to ignore that as well.

On a brighter note, the Feds tried to stop people driving on roads from which they can see Mt. Rushmore. Since those were state roads, the SD governor sent state troopers to dismantle the barricades!

State closures by the Fed! Who is playing games? They just want this to be as aggravating as possible. Meanwhile we were ready to engage in a battle with Syria at what cost just a few weeks ago.

The whole bunch are dirty and seems to get worse every year for decades. Lack of morals, and integrity is absent. But they are Lawyers.....
