I figured it would end like this. The adults in the room are doing damage control while Trump claims victory over Islam. I am not sure how much more judges can do here, and it is unlikely that they can help non-citizens and non-greencard holders much, but they will do what they can.

Aside from all the sound and fury, this is just a huge distraction that Trump is using to deflect attention of Islamic people and the press from Israel, Isis, Saudi Arabia, etc. Trump will say it is "effective policy" but it is symbolic only. He is doing it to rally his base and get support for his other initiatives with health care and the Mexico wall thing.

We all know that Trump does not care how many lives he ruins as long as he wins in the end, but it is a shame that he is ruining so many lives just for propaganda purposes. Take note everyone!

Lizz: I don't agree with Permanent Residents being banned if that helps

Yes, that part of it seemed really harsh. Permanent residents from the countries on the list who are currently in the U.S. now can't afford to leave the country or they might not get back in. This can include spouses of U.S. citizens or people who need to travel for their job.

He is doing it to rally his base

And our bass too, perhaps. :-)

I don't agree with Permanent Residents being banned if that helps, but that was a dispute within the administration and neither does Trump's Department of Homeland Security. So hopefully that provision can be overturned.

Pretty disgusting distraction, Lizz.

How is discussing the legal basis for the executive order a disgusting distraction? The uncomfortable truth for some is that this is an extension of a pre-existing policy. If you disagree with it, just say Obama and the Democrats were wrong on this. You will find it liberating to stop twisting yourself into pretzel in order to arrive at the conclusion that Trump=everything bad, Obama=everything good. The sky will not fall if you let go of tribalism and judge people and policies on the merits.

The Question that should be asked is the US president higher than the law . I hope not and the Judge sticks to his ruling

Trump is going to take another look

We all know that Trump is an analytical genius and legal scholar par excellence.

I have also heard that he hit a hole-in-one the very first time he played golf. True story.

TsuchifumazuJAN. 29, 2017 - 04:53PM JST It's a matter of trusting the vetting process under Obama. If you believe that all of the applications were properly vetted during the Obama administration then you would not understand Trump's executive action. If you think there needs to be another look into the vetting process then you understand the executive order.

Unfortunately that's not rational policy. You're arguing from a position of ignorance - the fact that you personally don't know how the immigration and refugee systems work is passed off as evidence that they may not work which you then use to justify gross abuse of people who have done nothing wrong.

It's an unfortunately common theme in Trump propaganda - a common person's ignorance of the complex systems of the world is twisted until if you don't think about it, it seems to justify monumentally unAmerican behavior.

The green card holder ban is especially a disgrace. Obviously they would know that people have their life and their home and their family here, and they would know that some of them are out of the country and wouldn't be able to return. Takes a special kind of racist to do that.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

The green card holder ban is especially a disgrace.

I was also reading that Canadian born dual-citizens of these countries are not allowed into the US.

2 ( +4 / -2 )

once they have passed all requirements, you let them in, pure, easy and simple.

That's how it has been. But Trump feels better putting a blanket ban on entire groups based on their religion.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

Two camps on this one. One camp (mostly the left) understands that we have a 2 year vetting process and immigration is hands down the most difficult way to enter the country. The other camp (mostly on the right) has people who simply refuse to believe that.

The data just doesn't show that this kind of policy is effective, and there are obviously side effects that will hurt the US abroad. Stop enacting bad policy out of fear.

Pretty disgusting distraction, Lizz.

Trump is going to take another look at the vetting process certainly. The countries on the list are mostly failed states where it is very difficult to get good data to even start the process, although Green Card Holders should have been an exception.

From a legal standpoint it was totally expected that a federal judge would nullify Trump's executive order rendering the President unable to carry out such actions under the law in only his second week in office. It appears that the Trump Trainwreck is gathering speed - the first sign was on the very day he was inaugurated when Trump was forced to back down about the turn out of people to his inauguration, when aerial photographic evidence presented by mass media outlets proved he had lied again. The Supreme court, if it gets that far is bound to overrule Trump's orders since they are illegal as things stand. This loss of authority from the President at such an early stage of his presidency is certainly entertaining for the silent majority who disagree with him and who did not vote for him. But at the same time, these illegal actions will cause much suffering for individuals stranded at airports and elsewhere and lead to the break up of families. According to CNN, thousands have already gathered at airports to protest. I wonder if such unrest will escalate and we will see a return to something like the Nixon era when there were large scale demonstrations and public unrest all over the US.

1 ( +3 / -2 )

you do proper vetting

Trump voters think there is no vetting at all. They believe that if someone wants to be a refugee in the USA all they do is fill out a form, wait a few days then off they go with their plane ticket and greencard. They don't like to read anything on their own and just get their trusted news from Trump's website

1 ( +3 / -2 )

I wonder what the Japanese press will say. What we need is for Yu Darvish's Father to be denied entry into the U.S because he was born in Iran - That would make the story of a lifetime.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

How soon before everybody bans Trump?

1 ( +1 / -0 )

It is a good policy that was clumsily executed as I am sure it is hard to get information out to all airports in the world in multiple languages in a day. So it took time to clarify but dual passport holders no longer affected, green card holders no longer affected and people with visas are having a secondary screening. This is also not a Muslim ban as it doesnt apply to 9 of the top 10 Muslim countries. There are more lawyers and activists at airports now than there were travelers actually affected by this.

Plentybof european countries, etc are upset as they are stuck with prople who couldn't board their flights to the USA.

USA great move and it will gather much goodwill across the globe, NOT.

Separation is never the answer. It doesn't work in Palestine and it doesn't work in America between the different groups. We are more alike than different. There is much common ground.

People just want to be left alone to "pursue happiness" without outside interference. "Outside" can just be the local govt for some (like me).

OTOH, President Trump is only doing what he believes he was elected to do. The masses in the center of the USA don't see many different groups of people, except in a few places where immigrants have previously settled. For example, in Tennessee there are lots of Somalis making a new life. Folks who were there before are getting used to these hard-working, kind, people being their neighbors. Sure, a few crazies think that "different = bad", but that happens everywhere in the world. The only solution I know is forced integration so everyone becomes a little more knowledgeable and understanding that our differences help everyone.

Just because President Trump is wrong, doesn't mean he shouldn't do everything in the list of campaign promises. How else will the average USA citizen learn these are really bad ideas? They need to see the pain caused to other humans. That, sadly, is the only hope.

The Obama administration banned Iraqi refugees for 6 months and no one cared. Jimmy Carter deported numerous Iranian citizens as well.

Obama also decided the 7 countries:

The Department of Homeland Security targeted these seven countries over the last years as countries of concern. In February 2016 “The Department of Homeland Security today announced that it is continuing its implementation of the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015 with the addition of Libya, Somalia, and Yemen as three countries of concern, limiting Visa Waiver Program travel for certain individuals who have traveled to these countries.” It noted “the three additional countries designated today join Iran, Iraq, Sudan and Syria as countries subject to restrictions for Visa Waiver Program travel for certain individuals.”

It is also my understanding that the Executive Order was incorrectly applied in the case of green card holders, lets see if that gets straightened out once all the confusion passes.

I stumbled across this while researching some else. The third sentence from the 2016 Republican platform:

"We believe America is exceptional because of our historic role — first as refuge, then as defender, and now as exemplar of liberty for the world to see."

Looks like they believe in that right up to the point where they get scared.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

@lonely: sorry. Japan is not US property. This has no relation with Iranian in Japan.

The seven countries mentioned above, people cooperated with US war in their countries. Majority. Seems either Trump planned to make these countries to side with ISIS or hatred against any Islamic people.lie.

"We believe America is exceptional because of our historic role — first as refuge, then as defender, and now as exemplar of liberty for the world to see."

Funny how when someone from the Dems says this, it's ok and America can be exceptional. But if a Republican says the same thing, in a manner that says 'make America Great" or "Put America First" they get called a xenophobe or a Nationalist and hell-bent on taking over the world. Which is it? You want America to be an exceptional country, then you have to realize that we are because of the way our laws work in allowing those whom other countries tend to step over or mistreat, and also just because we take refugees, doesn't mean that we can't look out for our own interest and try to solve the issues inside our country first, without it being said that we are turning away from the international community.

How is this a Muslim Ban when only 1 of the top 10 countries with Muslim populations (Iran) is on the list?

http://www.worldatlas.com/articles/countries-with-the-largest-muslim-populations.html

All the manufactured outrage is for political purposes. Obama took similar action in 2011 against Iraqi refugees. This is not a ban against religion, but just extra screening for people from the 7 countries that the Obama administration designated in Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015

There are also exceptions built in to the Executive Order that can be used as applicable. people who met those have already been released.

-1 ( +2 / -3 )

Looks like they believe in that right up to the point where they get scared.

I think I missed the Trump order that bans all foreigners from entering the United States. I must have missed the line in the Constitution that says America cannot regulate immigration and must allow unregulated entry to anyone able to get there. There must be a line in the law somewhere that states that no effort can be made to prevent Islamic extremists from entering the US.

Nowhere in President Trump’s executive order does he single out any country for VISA suspension. Instead what his XO does is say he’s suspending visa approvals from countries already outlined by the Obama administration as representing a specific threat such that they were categorized for extreme visa vetting by: 8 U.S.C. 1187(a)(12)

@superlib,

They aren`t band.

Sounds like implemented a policy like Japan has. Nobody complaining about that. Even the foreigners living in the country.

-2 ( +0 / -2 )

"We believe America is exceptional because of our historic role — first as refuge, then as defender, and now as exemplar of liberty for the world to see."

Looks like they believe in that right up to the point where they get scared.

And with good reason, being careful and taking preliminary precautions to safeguard the country after a couple of Jihadist attacks is in no way implying that don't welcome immigrants, that's a stupid BS narrative from the left. You protect the country, you do proper vetting, Japan does it, Israel, so there is no difference and once they have passed all requirements, you let them in, pure, easy and simple. But as long as we have to deal with radical Islam, we should be extreme when it comes to vetting.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

Seven of the nine ISIS terrorists who committed the November 2015 attacks in Paris entered Europe pretending to be refugees from Syria. There simply is not a proper vetting process that can be completed in a country enmeshed in a civil war. There is no access to police records, no interviews with co-workers, no real background checks that can be conducted to verify the identity and history of the person claiming the refugee status. ISIS made it clear that it would exploit the refugee process to infiltrate the West. Long ago the plan should have been to set up safe camps within the region for the refugees to go to. Why bring people over to countries where they don't share the same value system. Just sets up trouble.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

USA is not Europe where there are massive problems with Muslims. In my own country Muslims are not currently a problem. I certainly don't want their numbers to increase any further however.

Good on Trump for doing this and hopefully it will cause Europe to grow a spine and address its Islam problem.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

There simply is not a proper vetting process that can be completed in a country enmeshed in a civil war.

There isn't proper vetting from any Muslim country which is why the US has experienced terror attacks from perpetrators with ties to virtually all of the Middle East and North Africa. Most importantly the FBI also needs to be allowed to continue extensive investigations of terrorist suspects that it has cancelled in several cases out of political correctness under Obama.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Trump voters think there is no vetting at all.

No, they want more extreme vetting, big difference.

They believe that if someone wants to be a refugee in the USA all they do is fill out a form, wait a few days then off they go with their plane ticket and greencard.

In some cases, pretty much.

They don't like to read anything on their own and just get their trusted news from Trump's website

No, they just don't want to be forcefed liberal open borders sympathetic BS that's all.

This Executive Order deals very specifically with a regulation that was established by the Obama administration: the Visa Waiver Program Improvement and Terrorist Travel Prevention Act of 2015. Iraq and Syria were named in the original regulation with the caveat that additional countries could be added. Iran and Sudan were subsequently included, followed by Libya, Somalia and Yemen in Feb. 2016 -- all by the Obama administration.
