Tough love. NGOs had been flagging the sweatshop issues up years before the Rana Plaza collapse.

Corporate social responsibility applies to governments too.

A couple of years ago Pakistan was also going to get awarded the same status in Europe and the Bangladeshi Government forcibly tried to block the preferential status and openly opposed the move. They just want it all to themselves.

The Bangladeshi exporters are getting favourable treatment and they should have used the opportunity to strengthen their infrastructure but, they did not do that, instead the owners are just concerned with making money. And the workers still get paid less than a dollar per day for putting their lives in danger.

Maybe this is the only way some countries will learn to treat their workers better??

And in China they just put up suicide nets (FoxConn/Apple) = I guess these could be used in the case of fire.

Just get the money from China. No strings attached.

no strings attached? You have to be kidding...

If the workers in Bangledesh (or China) were allowed to unionize then you might see some change. But I'm not hopeful. And I refuse to consider Walmart or is overseas subsidiaries for shopping.
