This is one main reason there are trrorists in this world. They feel hopeless. The world wants one thing but a super power says no. Shame on the UN and shame on america (im talking about the few who are in power and control the masses) . Im really starting to wonder if anyone is really free.

Rice said the United States did not want the veto to be “misunderstood” as support for continued Israeli settlement construction.

FAIL

That is what happens at places like the UNSC where you got a few original members with permanent status and veto power to veto anything they(or their friends) don't like.

Never mind that the permanent members no longer represent the real powers in the current world

UNSC is for nuclear armed countries of which the USA is one. That it started the UN in the ideas of another age and today couldn't care less about paying its dues or doing anything reasonably concrete to stop stupid wars makes it frustrating. It has long lost the moral authority on global issues

Who can be the soft power here to get USA on side? Their reasoning continues to baffle

Um...the U.N has always been useless, it's not exactly a new development. Those resolutions don't even carry any weight when they are passed. The only thing that has any weight is a full on sanction and only a few countries carry the economic weight to pull off something like that and they like having Israel in a well supplied, fighting position.

"The Israeli settlements established in the Palestinian Territory occupied since 1967, including East Jerusalem, are illegal and constitute a major obstacle to the achievement of a just, lasting and comprehensive peace."

All other UNSC members voted in favor of this resolution. The American regime is therefore responsible for the ongoing israeli war crimes. I hope the American people send a clear message to this regime on March 20th. Time for regime change in America, and I am not talking about just changing the president.

" The United States vetoed a U.N. resolution Friday that would have condemned “illegal” Israeli settlements and demanded an immediate halt to all settlement building, a move certain to anger Arab countries and Palestinian supporters around the world. "

Thanks to Julian Assange and Wikileaks we know this is and has always been complete bullsh*t. The only ppl angered by it will be the lazy, over-fed, hate-filled residents of the refugee camps in so-called Palestine, who seem enjoy the misery of their present status; how else to explain why they have done so little to build and create the first requisite of a viable state:a civil society.

Well this was a nice little knife into the back of Obama courtesy of the Palestinians, with some nice "extra pushes" from America's allies.

One-sided UN resolutions about this conflict run counter to the goal of a comprehensive peace plan. And I mean that for both sides, but to date there's never been a UN resolution condemning only the Palestinians, just ones condemning both or just Israel. You aren't going to help the peace process with resolutions any more than you're going to help end the current conflict between Thailand and Cambodia by passing one-sided resolutions written by Thailand. It just works to polarize both sides to a greater extent.

The fact is that the US has strongly condemned the settlements, sent special envoys to say as much, publicly snubbed Netanyahu, offered wild economic and military packages to end them, and have made it very clear that they run contrary to the peace process. And with one silly little politically motivated resolution the Palestinians are able to completely erase all that work and slap the face of the one entity who has done the most and invested the most in trying to get the Israelis to dismantle or abandon them. In the ultimate form of irony the Palestinians know they can get away with it because they know the US will not walk away from the table.

It would have reaffirmed that the Security Council “does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlement activity, which is a serious obstacle to the peace process.” It also would have had the council condemn “all forms of violence, including rocket fire from Gaza” and stress the need for “calm and security” for Israelis and Palestinians.

Well gosh, after reading the US's version above I can certainly see why it wasn't accepted. A little too even-handed?

Obama can also personally thank our allies who signed on to this political piece of crap. They know the US will have to veto it to keep the peace process alive, so they sign the damn thing just so they can tell their people they signed it. Talk about utterly spineless. Now they can waive this useless piece of paper around to curry favor from other Middle Eastern states and placate the simpletons who go around saying, "This is why terrorism exists."

At the end of the day the peace process just took one step back and the US's position just became more difficult. And it's happening at a time when there are protests raging in the Middle East. Since Israel won't get it through their thick skulls that the settlements have to go and since the Palestinians are doing their best to undercut the US, I think Obama should tell both of them to take a flying leap.

How much did Israeli Lobbyists in Washington pay for this?

They know the US will have to veto it to keep the peace process alive

The israelis have so many times shown that they do not want peace, and Wikileaks has recently reconfirmed it, by demonstrating that no matter how much the Palestinians are willing to give up, the israelis will not accept.

By vetoing this resolution, the US regime has once again demonstrated the power AIPAC has on it.

The fact is that the US has strongly condemned the settlements, sent special envoys to say as much, publicly snubbed Netanyahu, offered wild economic and military packages to end them, and have made it very clear that they run contrary to the peace process.

The clearest message the US has sent to the israelis is that they can do absolutely anything they want, break any international law, commit any war crime, attack anyone (including the US) and it will be rewarded with massive financial and military aid and will be protected from the UN by American vetoes.

I love your comments, Sabi. Anytime you come out with a position it immediately undercuts others who might be saying similar things. Please, keep posting. The more you write the more people will distance themselves from your words just because they are coming from you.

If the Palestinians really wanted peace, they could have started to have it when Israel left Gaza. They could still have it now. However, Hamas never has wanted it. Israel has made peace with enemies. Now it time for the Palestinians to give it a try.
