U.S. immigration agents arrest 680 workers at Mississippi plants

U.S. immigration authorities arrested nearly 700 people at seven agricultural processing plants across Mississippi on Wednesday in what federal officials said could be the largest worksite enforcement operation in a single state.

Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) said in a statement they detained about 680 people who were working illegally at the plants. They said they also seized business records as part of a federal criminal investigation.

Some of those detained will be released for "humanitarian reasons" and required to appear in U.S. immigration court, the U.S. Attorney's Office of the Southern District of Mississippi, which partnered with ICE, said in a statement. Others will be transported to an ICE facility in Jena, Louisiana, it said.

A video released by ICE showed buses arriving at a Canton, Mississippi, processing facility where agents searched workers and checked their identification documents. Some workers had their hands restrained with nylon ties, the video showed.

ICE did not specify the nationalities of the workers arrested. The Mexican Consulate said it was traveling to the area to assist its nationals who might have been involved.

Past large operations to enforce immigration laws at workplaces have included the arrest in 2008 of more than 300 workers at a kosher meatpacking plant in Postville, Iowa.

During the administration of former President Barack Obama, ICE prioritized the arrests of recent border crossers, people who had previously been ordered deported and those seen as a threat to public safety.

President Donald Trump has made cracking down on illegal immigration a centerpiece of his presidency, however, and ICE has stepped up its activities considerably since he took office in January 2017.

ICE said it has made more than 2,300 criminal and administrative arrests related to workplaces in the 2018 fiscal year, which ended in September, compared to just over 300 in the previous year.

Among the facilities targeted in Wednesday's operation was a Peco Foods processing plant in Canton. On its website, Peco Foods says it is the 8th largest poultry producer in the United States.

Tom Super, spokesman for the National Chicken Council, an industry group, said meat processing companies do their best to hire legal workers.

"The chicken industry uses every tool in the tool box to ensure a legal workforce," Super said.

700 people on a day where the PotUS is pretending to show compassion.

ICE needs disbanding, it is an inhuman and cruel set up.

stupid Orange Man cant do anything about illegal immigration. he is just talk, he wont do any of these "raids", no way we can deport all these people anyway, stupid Drumpf!

oops.

Watch the focus quickly change to Mississippi being a red state, any weak political affiliation that can be found for the people who own these businesses, oh my god, the price of chicken will go up now, stupid orange man! anything to distract. Promises made, promises kept. ]

except that he just did exactly what his detractors said he wouldnt and couldnt do.

Liberals have an excuse for every day of the year why actions shouldnt be taken. Today was the day, it had no special meaning or reason not to do what was done.

Winning.

It's not "can't", it's "won't". We're talking the 'Pubs here, who are widely known as the Open Borders party. Since 2013, they've been both actively campaigning against immigration legislation, as well as refusing to pass any when they held all the power.

The stupid orange man and your teammates only want to pretend they want to do something about immigration, as that leads to votes. They actually want open borders, as more criminals means more crimes that they can use to rile up their voters and win more elections.

The Republicans are as anti-illegal immigration as they are fiscally conservative; which is to say they aren't.

"These people", as you call them, show resolve, bravery and determination in coming to America.

It's not them who should be deported.

pretend they want to do something

tell that to the people who were arrested by pretend ICE agents and are now on a pretend bus back to their country.

How could orange man do such a terrible thing today? does he not know its Charlize Theron's birthday? (the outrage!)

"These people", as you call them, show resolve, bravery and determination in coming to America.

their presence is illegal. they can show those same qualities as they return home to help their country of origin improve and grow by their presence. They were making such a valuable contribution to America by their work in this chicken plant. I am sure chicken plants in their country are in need of their expertise and tax payments.

Gotta put on a show, or you can't feign deniability when people question your fake news. The ones they deport are non-violent - they leave the violent ones as plants that they can use to rile up their base and get votes. It's fact, even if you want to bury your head in the sand.

Toasted ... they also show how to break multiple federal and state laws.

Every worker found to be illegally working in the USA should be deported and blocked from reentrance at least 10 yrs.

What would Japan do? Like we don't know.

0 ( +2 / -2 )

no, we deport the violent ones over and over.

Lack of a wall, and Dem open borders policy (as well as this idea that illegals are some type of "brave and resolute people fleeing violence") allows them to come right back and commit more crimes.

I could give hundreds of examples of a multiple time deported illegal killing or committing crimes against US citizens.

-3 ( +2 / -5 )

We also jail the violent ones. Aren’t like 20% of our incarcerated felons non citizens?

Man accused of killing infant over paternity had been deported 5 times: ICE

2 second google search. FIVE TIMES deported.

Fake news - his real name was "Dave Smith", and he was from Kentucky. He's just been a deep undercover false flag plant.

Or is this some of your famous lying that you try to cover up as "sarcasm"?

Sure, if you want to bury your head in the sand and believe your right-wing fake-news deep-state MSM, sure, that's your choice.

The rest of us prefer not to be sheep.

then what is it when you intentionally dont tell the truth to troll others?

Do you condone this here?

Turns out that Blacklabel is summarizing correctly.

80.9% of the people in US Federal prison are US Citizens, so 19.1% are not. August 3, 2019 data is here:

https://www.bop.gov/about/statistics/statistics_inmate_citizenship.jsp

But being a non-citizen doesn't mean the inmate is also illegally in the USA.

11.7% of federal inmates have Mexican citizenship which is the 2nd highest behind US citizens. The BoP doesn't publish illegal resident status that I found.

begging hard for a suspension? rather than dealing with the nonsense your colleague is posting.

Do you not agree with the facts I posted? Or do you agree that what this other person is saying is actually true and part of honest debate? its just trolling.

In fact, I was previously suspended (which was fair enough) for doing so.

Wondering who is going to do those menial jobs now, USAians are too good for that no ?

Here is another Trump operation that stands out for its ugliness. Again children are separated from their parents, ICE focuses on Hispanics, constitutional rights are violated, excessive force is being used. Check other media for more information.

Toasted Heretic - "These people", as you call them, show resolve, bravery and determination in coming to America.

Not according to the laws of the U.S.A.. While Democrats may be in favor of open borders, they simply don't have the votes to change the status quo. If only Democrats could enable more illegal alien voting.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

The damn republicans have fouled this up so much with their open borders policies. Look at the results - they refuse to even debate bipartisan legislation when sharing leadership, then they refuse to pass any legislation when they had all the power. Now this immigration mess has come back to haunt them - and they're stupid enough to think that we're going to believe it's anything other than a direct result of their open-border policy.

The current day Republican party: Refuses to pass immigration legislation, and every mass shooter since 2016 has been Republican.

Their rot is through and through. Nothing unpoisoned remains in the Republican party.

-1 ( +1 / -2 )

While Democrats may be in favor of open borders . . .

Factually incorrect. Here is a better accounting of the what the Democrats favor when it comes to the border:

https://www.nytimes.com/2018/06/27/us/politics/fast-check-donald-trump-democrats-open-borders.html

If only Democrats could enable more illegal alien voting.

False again, and there is no credible evidence to support this assertion.
