He is a minor. Nobody is going to be able to use his name. Police cannot legally release it. News organizations won't use it.
The family name could be found through mortgage records, if they aren't renting.
Do you slow down to gawk at terrible road accidents too?
A trigger lock probably would have prevented this, assuming the key wasn't easily found by anyone.

Then why did you ask?

@strangerland,
Please enlighten us with a solution to remove millions of guns? America isn't the size of Japan. It is much bigger. All of you complaining most likely are not American, and or living in America, or even lived in America. Pretty much if you don't live in America or are a American Citizen, your opinion is null and void.
Strangerland
If people spent as much effort figuring how to get rid of guns, as they did finding reasons why it won't work, the problem could be solved.
Drako
@Mister X,
Yes that will work because banning guns from society also implies that law enforcement is authorized to take guns away from criminals besides the mass shootings on a nearly basis are not the work of criminals but of adepts of the NRA and the 2nd amendment.
Guns are made with the sole intent of killing people so get rid of the guns and less people will be killed.
Guns are already banned in the City of Chicago. "All residents who purchased and registered their handguns prior to January 1982 were allowed to keep their weapons. Chicago became the first major city to enact a handgun freeze in United States history". however there has been 1800 people shot as of August 26th 2019. Police already do take guns away from criminals. In fact, in the state of New York, there was a time when it was legal to stop and frisk anyone on the street. However it was declared unconstiutuional, and was stopped. So, with millions of guns in circulation in the US, please tell me the plan to remove ALL guns from all American Citizens.
Yours Truely,
A prior concelaled weapons permit holder, until I moved to Japan.

Yeah, if you want to make the news there thesedays you gotta lay out a lot more bodies than this kid did. The public are unimpressed by anything less than 15 in 2019.

He will bail out within 10 years, you know he is age under 18!

Gun safe or trigger locks need to be mandatory. Don't leave the key anywhere a child can possibly find it.
No child should ever be able to gain access or control of a firearm. The NRA strongly suggests both trigger locks and gun safes. They are relatively cheap. Every state should pass a law and have criminal statutes that firearms must be locked up when not in use. Doesn't matter if the gun owner doesn't have children. ALL firearms need to be locked up when not in use. Period.
This is something that can be done. Today. Now.
CrazyJoe
When you buy a gun for home protection, just remember that the person most likely to be shot with that gun is you or another family member.
bass4funk
Please tell that to 100 million registered gun owners that it’s a problem they would vehemently disagree.
CrazyJoe
Another day in NRA's America.
This is an extreme example of the real cost of guns. Domestic violence kills thousands of Americans every year. And no amount of background checks or red flag laws will help. Because the problem is the presence of guns in people's homes.

Gotta keep spinning conspiracy theories. Ever think it's because shootings are the rule and not the exception in Merika?
Blacklabel
So why is so critical to be the lead story in the world section of a Japan based website? Not even important enough in the country it happened in to interrupt a 3 day weekend. Gotta keep pushing that gun control narrative.
wtfjapan
Maybe there is shooting fatigue in the press?
actually not fatigue just cost, many smaller news networks wont send out reporters to crime scenes unless there is around 7 or more murdered, pretty sad society when the kill count dictates whats news or not.

Killing by firearms isn't in the top 15 list of ways Americans die. https://www.cdc.gov/nchs/fastats/deaths.htm
I would never compare humans dying with any insect being killed. Highly insensitive.
There are things that can realistically be done. Changing the 2nd Amendment just isn't one of them. That level of political change just isn't possible since 13 states can prevent any amendment to the Constitution. There are easily 13 states that would not ratify that sort of amendment. It takes an amendment to remove an amendment.

@theFu
so basically, people are gonna continue to die like flies. nothing we can do, right? glad i,m not there, please remind me not to enter the US anytime soon.

Yesterday was a national holiday in the US. People often sleep in after a long weekend. Plus, the timezone in Alabama is 13 hours off from Japan time, so the news will pick up now that it is a business day.
The gun owner should have locked it in a gun safe or had a trigger lock to prevent unauthorized access. $22 could have have prevented THAT gun from being used. The gun owners are be criminally liable.
Calling for the 2nd amendment to be repealed isn't realistic. Only someone with zero knowledge about how amendments are added to the US Constitution would think it was possible outside of fantasy land. It isn't.

Get rid of the 2nd second amendment, ban guns out of society and consequently put an end to the mass shootings on a nearly daily basis this isn't exactly rocket science people.
rcch
unless it,s a huge mass shooting or an alien invasion, stories like these are considered too normal by american standards. that,s how much of a j un gl e USA is.
SuperLib
When you live in a society with hundreds of million of guns, stories like this aren't shocking, they're expected.
Mister X
Isn't it about time we consider the NRA to be a terrorist organization seeing as their ideology is responsibe for domestic terror on an epic scale ?

Interesting that this story is shown here at Japan Today. I haven't been able to find it in any of the major US media. Maybe there is shooting fatigue in the press? The high school stadium shooting in Alabama also got very little coverage. The Texas shooting got a lot.
