So no more of this nonsense That's being continuously repeated that Taiwan/Formosa was never part of China.

Nobody is arguing it was never part of China. They are saying it has never been part of the People’s Republic of China. Which is true.

20 ( +22 / -2 )

China’s always angry about everything. Too uptight.

17 ( +20 / -3 )

International Waters means International Waters, China. No reason to get upset, just take one of your carrier groups and park yourself 12 miles off the coast of the US to your heart's content. It may even make you feel better.

15 ( +17 / -2 )

So strange that China would be upset with a ship sailing through international waters. It makes no sense.

Even if it was assumed that Taiwan was part of China, the Taiwan straight is more than 24 miles wide making the waters in between and outside the 12 miles from both the mainland and Taiwan, International waters free for all maritime nations to transit at will. Now add to that the fact Taiwan in NOT part of China, is independently ruled and the situation remains that water outside the 12 mile limit mean neither Taiwan's waters not China's waters were encroached upon.

China getting angry is something it needs to deal with internally, as ships have every right to be there (in international waters).

Taiwan the good global citizen has no issue with this but China the bad global citizen gets angry. Shows which is the more responsible of the two.

14 ( +18 / -4 )

It's international waters. What's the big deal?

14 ( +16 / -2 )

It's called "Freedom of the Seas". The US is well within their rights to sail there - Here's hoping they keep it up, along with like-minded democratic allies of free Taiwan.

But what would scum China know about freedom? They openly despise it.

Free Taiwan never was, never will be, Communist China.

13 ( +15 / -2 )

China is insecure. It seems very often that the Chinese raising the issues over international water or international airspace need a nap when they get upset like a small child over nothing.

11 ( +12 / -1 )

How many times has China sailed into Japanese waters recently? When China does that so willfully, they can shut their pie hole about the US sailing through international waters.

10 ( +12 / -2 )

In a statement, Liu Pengyu, spokesman for China's embassy in Washington, said China firmly opposed the move and urged the United States to "immediately stop provoking troubles, escalating tensions and undermining peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

Then quit sending your ships and aircraft into the area, China! That region is not yours.

Free Taiwan never was, never will be, Communist China.

'It isn't, it wasn't, it ain't never gonna be' said the late Aretha Franklin and Whitney Houston back in 1989. And the same idiom applies to YOU, China. So SHUTITUP.

9 ( +11 / -2 )

If we agree this is no big deal, then it should go both ways. For example, US was very upset about Russia placing missiles on Cuba, because it was too close to US,

Apples and oranges. Do you think China would be fine if a nuclear nation stations nuclear missiles on Taiwan aimed at China? Of course they would, as the US did with nuclear missiles on Cuba.

The topic is about freedom of navigation in international waters. They are deemed international for a reason. Objecting to this should be taken up at the UN where it will be addressed and put to bed. That China does not take it to the UN shows that it is perfectly aware it has no grounds to object.

Missiles are not involved and have nothing to do with this topic.

FYI - Taiwan/Formosa was annexed by mainland China in 1683 !

It was annexed by the Qing Dynasty in 1683. The Qing handed Taiwan over to Japan in 1895. The Qing Dynasty collapsed in 1911 and the Republic of China took over. Taiwan was handed back to the Republic of China in 1945 and it is still in their control.

The People's Republic of China (PRC) did not even exist until 1949.

What's the Free Dial prefix in china ?

The USN will sail anywhere international law allows and the Chinese (and their fan boys) can go pound sand.

8 ( +11 / -3 )

Oh cry me a river China..

8 ( +10 / -2 )

Next time, tag the fighter aircraft and watch it disintegrate like hitting a motorcycle with a car.

I think the P-8 aircraft will fare better than the fighter.

7 ( +8 / -1 )

My point to reiterate is that Taiwan became officially part of China 339 years ago regardless !

By that logic, the USA and Canada are still part of Britain. It is failed logic.

Genghis Khan invaded China. His DNA has been traced all over the world as the most prolific "father". About 16M men on Earth today can be traced to him. 1 in 200 men.

By that failed logic, most of South and Central America belong to Spain and Portugal. Or all those places belong to the completely marginalized native peoples. Go back far enough and China was under control of others, not Chinese.

None of this matters. Taiwan is a different country from the mainland. Why is that so hard to understand?

7 ( +7 / -0 )

China’s always angry about everything. Too uptight

They just think that projects strength. They're too STUPID to realize they're pissing the world off more and more at them.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

Eastman, there is no provocation if they are in international waters. It doesn't matter if the warship is Chinese, Russian, American, or Japanese. It's not a difficult concept to grasp. This is for you too, Fredrik.

6 ( +10 / -4 )

According to the governments of Japan and the US and the UN, Taiwan is part of China and therefore the Taiwan Straight is China territorial waters.

No, it is not Chinese waters past the 12 mile territorial limit as recognized by all nations including China, in the law of the sea.

Therefore, this is an overt act of aggression on the part of the US regime.

Therefore this is a lawful action by the US in international waters.

China is a nuclear power.

France, UK, Pakistan, India, Israel, Russia, USA and NK all have nuclear weapons. Quite a group.

The US regime is utterly insane! A menace to human everywhere.

Many more people around the world consider China and Russia to be utterly insane, and a menace to the world.

6 ( +8 / -2 )

This is not about keeping the region free and open,

Guess what? This is about keeping the region free and open,

6 ( +7 / -1 )

The USN will sail anywhere international law allows and the Chinese (and their fan boys) can go pound sand.

Damn straight!

Oh cry me a river China..

LOL! More like throw me a CHILDISH USELESS tantrum China

5 ( +9 / -4 )

What else can China do but complain? They’re not stupid enough to start a proxy war with the United States. Look how well that has worked out for Russia.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

According to the governments of Japan and the US and the UN, Taiwan is part of China and therefore the Taiwan Straight is China territorial waters.

Even if this argument were correct, most of the water between the Mainland and Taiwan would still be International Waters.

5 ( +6 / -1 )

They can actually pass within the 12 nautical mile limit. It’s called innocent passage. China has done this off the coast of Alaska. No big deal.

5 ( +5 / -0 )

this is an overt act of aggression on the part of the US regime.

no it’s not, so take a chill pill

China is a nuclear power. *

so ?

The US regime is utterly insane!

A menace to human everywhere.

no it’s not, so take another chill pill

Almost all of Europe used to be provinces of the Roman Empire - what status there was on a calender n-many years ago is not necessarily relevant today - Prussia is now Poland.

I do know understand how - or why - communist China can claim Taiwan (I am not qualified in this area - but I certainly don't want a rant from a China troll on the matter) - China had a civil war - chiang kai shek's forces retreated to Formosa -

They are a democratic society now - meaning that civilians in that country get to choose by popular vote the governance they want.

Completely unlike China or what they promised but did not fulfill - as is their consistency - to Hong-Kong - but of course could not fulfill what they "promised" to do (as if there really was any doubt they'd fulfill their promises - who are they after all?"

What pride of dignity do people have in China?...lying consistently - bullying their neighbours?...

What is it you people feel proud of???

Make no mistake - you have 1 air-craft carrier from Russia - a country getting it's ass kicked - there is more US sea power based in Japan than in the rest of the world...

Wave your flag bravely - but we've seen what brazen military stupidity has done recently - The US loves this...

No Americans getting killed - testing weapons systems against adversaries...

It only makes the US Military Industrial complex's wet dream come true if China attempts to invade Taiwan...

I double dare you

China will not hesitate to initiate a war & destroy any aspirations at Taiwan's independence, the CCP's defence minister recently threatened.

Nobody is arguing it was never part of China. They are saying it has never been part of the People’s Republic of China. Which is true.

Got it !

However i was referring to the usual repeated rhetoric as my comment states and not the article.

And so the same people that were the imperial ching became the People’s Republic of China !

My point to reiterate is that Taiwan became officially part of China 339 years ago regardless !

Your lack of knowledge regarding the history of China is leading you to an incorrect conclusion. There really is no "China". That land mass over 4000 years has gone from one dynasty to another, each one utterly destroying the previous, in terms of people and culture. The Qing Dynasty is as removed from present day PRC, as the Eastern Roman Empire is from the Republic of Turkey. Same land mass but that's all.

The last vestige of the Ching Dynasty was Henry Pu Yi who became head of the Imperial Japanese Army backed Manchukuo.

I viewed the footage of this encounter and it is most definitely absolutely not 10 feet away from the U.S. aircraft

ok maybe 15feet, point is the wash of the chinese jet could have easily put the US plane in danger,

way too close to be safe any way you look at it

In a statement, the U.S. military said the Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer Chung-Hoon carried out the transit.

A ship used in the geo-political techno-thriller 2034 in an eerily similar scenario.

Not to mention they're up to their ears in Covid with projections of up to 2 million deaths in the next few months.

So no more of this nonsense That's being continuously repeated that Taiwan/Formosa was never part of China.

I can't say I've heard anyone making such a claim. Probably every part of the world was at one point part of a different country than it is now. I like to think that the idea of "self-determination of peoples" is generally supported around the world. It's in the UN Charter.

2 ( +3 / -1 )

TokyoLiving - thank you for bringing up the comparison. Not just China, but any country is perfectly allowed to sail warships between Florida and Cuba. I will join you in denouncing anyone who complains.

2 ( +2 / -0 )

Well if this angers china then its the best thing to do every country in the world should build a war ship n sail through Taiwan strait even if that particular country doesn’t have ocean

1 ( +2 / -1 )

China’s always angry about everything. Too uptight

CCP top leadership is supremely insecure. There are competing factions within the CCP vying for power. If Xi's faction doesn't protest loudly when a US ship sails the Taiwan Strait it gives competing factions power. Sometimes you get communications from different factions as each tries to outdo the other. The CCP is not monolithic even as Xi tries to consolidate all power under his faction. China is just too big and diverse for that to ever work. China needs a federal form of government with powers devolved to regions and answerable to their local populations, but communism is not amenable to that kind of governance. Eventually the CCP will not be able to control China from Beijing and as in the past, another Chinese dynasty will collapse.

1 ( +1 / -0 )

Nope. Even if Taiwan was part of the PRC, the Taiwan Strait would remain international waters. Territorial waters only extend 12nm from shore. The territorial waters of mainland China and Taiwan do not overlap anywhere in the Taiwan Strait. The Strait is simply too wide. Economic Enforcement Zones extend 200 nautical miles from shore and do overlap in the straits, but ships of any nation are free to sail through any EEZ. China tries to claim territorial sovereignty over their EEZ but international law does not allow that. Territorial sovereignty ends 12 nm from shore. Period.

I viewed the footage of this encounter and it is most definitely absolutely not 10 feet away from the U.S. aircraft

During the intercept, which took place on December 21, the J-11 Flanker derivative flew in front of the RC-135 and within “20 feet” of its nose, the statement suggests. In addition, an unnamed U.S. military spokesperson also suggested that the J-11 came within 10 feet of the RC-135’s wing, Reuters reports. USINDOPACOM stressed that the “unsafe maneuver” forced the RC-135 to perform evasive measures to avoid a collision.

They're acting like Kimbo of NK. Maybe they're pissed off that Russia has world's focus in the limelight right now.

Hey Xi and all you CCP chumps, don't you have a rise of CoVid cases to deal with at home? Hop to it and take your toys home. We're not impressed by your macho crap and if you don't leave the independent island nation of Taiwan alone, you might get UN sanctions slapped on you too!

0 ( +0 / -0 )

Well, either it is not a big deal, or it is. If we agree this is no big deal, then it should go both ways. For example, US was very upset about Russia placing missiles on Cuba, because it was too close to US, and they felt threatened. If we agree US can send warships near China, then they should complain when China/Russia makes a presence near US. (Again, the moderator censored my post as off-topic. This is very much ON-TOPIC.)

-1 ( +7 / -8 )

Typo, should be "should not complain".

-2 ( +3 / -5 )

More provocation by our friends, allies and peace loving nation, the US of A.

-3 ( +0 / -3 )

Then don't complain about China/Russia drills..

What the yanxz feel is China send a warship between Florida and Cuba??

is Taiwan strait part of USA already?

just wanted to be sure.

in case of russian and chinese ship sailing near Hokkaido in russian waters they are "provoking",if US ships do same thing in Taiwan strait they are "sailing".

nicely done doublespeak.
