Good they are hardworking! better than some others that are entering the UK and the EU.

This is an interesting reversal for the UK. In 1997, one of the conditions of the hand-over is that England would not grant access for Hong Kong residents by default, as they were afraid at that time that there would be a mass influx from Hong Kong into England. More than 20 years later, they've apparently done an about face.

I really hope JB can honor his words to bring in HK people when China actually push forward the said national security law.and this move will cause China big loss because the would-be applicant to UK are all highly civilised and wealthy people who will move to Britain with their value know-how and wealth.

@willib That was a very good point about Hong Kongers and citizenship. Because yeah, China was improving at the time.

By the by, has anyone noticed that Tienanmen commemorations have pretty much disappeared today? Between Corona and the race riots, there was no space in the news for them. Winnie Pooh is pleased.

I’ve met quite a few Chinese doing well in the UK.London’s Chinatown is a bustling vibrant place-Chinese do well in the UK-quite a few mainlanders too now!

Another one of these brilliant thoughts? In reality, Hong Kongers speak English and willing to integrate in their host nation, quite unlike other groups.

To get away from the murderous CCP regime? Any more difficult questions?

Imagine being thrown to the communist after a CENTURY of being loyal British subjects?
What kind of principle is the UK and Lord Patten practicing?
The UK were so effective in demonizing Imperial Japan then BUT they can't erase the facts stated below:
"Japanese special residency status allowed former Imperial subjects to to stay indefinitely in Japan and can be inherited. It was freely and automatically granted to former colonial subjects who have stayed in Japan before the war ended, or in a few cases, refugees from Jeju and Bodo as the territorial separation was completed in 1952 through the peace treaty."
Japan should be praised and London condemned!

Once again, you thought wrong.

What's da-kine?
So you think they should do nothing?

Do you... do you know the difference between Hong Kong and the US?

@zichi,
That was true, but its been 2 weeks, so its no longer applicable
If you havent noticed we have moved on to burning and looting
whats next? who knows but Im guessing more of that, then lots of
prosecutions, and possible corona hospitalizations and more
governors blaming Trump and screaming for ventilators and
money. Stay tuned.

China needs to change massively if she really wants to be a leading member of the world community. Hard to see that happening anytime soon.

Oh, sorry, I thought you were talking about the HK handover. If you mean the colonial period, you gotta be kidding. Have you ever looked at the population sizes of British colonies?

British expats across Europe abandoned by conservatives and their Brexit catastrophe lifted their fists and cheered at the news /s

The British National Overseas(BNO) passport was nothing rather than a scam! Applicants have to send their applicating documents to UK to wait four or sixc months of this passport! Becasue Hong Kong is no longer a British colonial, these document works has to be done in UK in a very very slow pace! These 350K current BNO holders and that 2 million eligible applicants might take a life long waiting to wait for scuh a passport! The British govt. made it clear : The BNO passport has NO residenceship in UK or other British territories overseas!

The CCP didn't exist. The treaty was made with the imperial Chinese Empire which ceased to exist in 1911. Then came the Chinese Republic which ended in 1949 when Mao took over. And we know what the CCP's word is worth!
I gotta say, Bozo is doing good here!
WilliB
No chance.

The people will eventually oust Lam and the rest of the Beijing aggressors, don't worry.
In the meantime, I wouldn't put too much faith in Johnson. He'll flip-flop, as he's well known to do so.
WilliB
Hiro S Nobumasa:
Because at the time there was the assumption that the CCP would honor an agreement and that Communist China would change and start to respect human rights.

By the way,a British Visa is not a "British Residence", maybe staying in UK up to 12 months or 18 months or even years! This is something people should know well! They will kick these BNO passport holders out when time expired! Anyway that is a British matter!
elephant200
Exactly a good news fro China! Hong Kong is a very lovely place except some Hong Kongers!
Hiro S Nobumasa
Why didn’t Lord Patten and London grant HK people UK citizenship back then when it’s their colony for 100 years?
Now they’re trying to play da-kine principled saviors!
How pathetic!
Goodlucktoyou
What about Iraqis and afghans? UK did illegally invade and occupy their countries, give them visas too!
