The currency markets are a reflection on what the world thinks of a new prime minister. Little to no movement, the same old same old is what’s gonna happen.

Really? Was Tony Blair centre-left? It will be interesting to see Labour's foreign policy and see if there is any fundamental change to policies related to the Middle East, Ukraine/Russia and China. I'm not holding my breath.

The centre-left Labour

Since the start of this century there has been little difference in the two parties policies. Conservatives have tried to appease the left and Labour the right. Labour has ended even any pretence of being for the working man anymore.

It’s all down to identify politics, virtue signalling, immigration policies etc. The main issue of poverty and the need for food banks for millions is a side issue and should be the main one. Ranting and buying properties especially for the young also is hardly ever mentioned. The problems of those struggling and those who kay struggle haven’t been addressed by any of the parties, it’s all smoke and mirrors.

Great to see that atrocious administration crushed.

Time to celebrate this weekend.

Then let’s see what Labour will do.

Little to no movement, the same old same old is what’s gonna happen.

Dont,be so,pessimism. Google,optimist.

Just being realistic.

Erm…okay

The main issue of poverty and the need for food banks for millions is a side issue and should be the main one

Yes. Those bleating about wokeness and virtue signaling should be looking at issues like this instead of being sidetracked by idiots and grifters on YouTube.

The austerity imposed by the right was rank.

Let’s see if Labour can improve this.

Let’s see if Labour can improve this.

That would be some very refreshing news.

-10 ( +1 / -11 )

Remember when some were celebrating that leaders in London, Edinburgh and Dublin could trace their family histories to South Asia? How did that work out?

-12 ( +0 / -12 )

A massive win although voting numbers were down. A big finger to those countries electing far-right parties.

You do realise that both parties are beholden to the same paymasters?

Check the U.K. news coverage about people being unable to afford to eat compared to those about Just stop Oil and Pride.

Surely a party called Labour would have a 5 year or less policy to ensure food banks are not necessary and action such as house building and rent caps are introduced. But nothing! Nothing addressed at all.

Both parties support Israel’s policies with hardly any criticism. Both want to fund Zelensky in a war he can’t win, the amounts involved could do so much to help at home.

Would be nice if we can be sure that “Things can only get better”. I would like that regardless of who is in power, to be honest I have contempt for the lot of them and the establishment.

Nigel Farage won two seats not the predicted 14 and no have any power in the parliament.

6 ( +7 / -1 )

Wallace

For him it’s all about his ego, beastly man who cares not a jot for others. I saw Sky News when the polls closed, he was predicted to win 17 seats, lol. Bet he’s gutted now.

Nigel and his reform party won 4 seats not the predicted 14.

Fully agree.

On the other side, you get people getting triggered over wokeness and LGBT characters in films.

Waste of space.

Labour have a mandate. Judge them on what they deliver, not the manifesto.

I’ll be among the first to rip into them if they fail on poverty.

Shyster. Noisemaker.

Surprised they got 4. I was thinking 2 - Farage and Labour/Conservative/Reform 30p Lee.

A shout-out to a left-leaning party.

Very different donors (paymasters) support the Labour Party and the Tory Party. They are not the same. Like all other countries, it is run by the Civil Service.

Truss and Rees-Mogg gone.

Have a good weekend, people.

Rees-Mogg lives in another era. His son dresses identically to his father.

Rainman1 will be very disappointed with these election results. He predicted a Tory win.

""The centre-left Labour was set to win a massive majority in the 650-seat parliament with Rishi Sunak's Conservatives poised to suffer the worst performance in the party's long history as voters punished them for a cost of living crisis, failing public services, and a series of scandals.""

Look out people here it comes, Change is in the air. Voters are disgusted, angry and wants new faces , stay tuned for more world leaders getting kicked out of office.

Reform pulled more than disaffected Tories to his ranks. It went from zero to surprisingly large numbers of votes in a matter of weeks, and won seats. Farage is a populist like his chum, Trump. If Labour activists replace Starmer with Kahn and it moves to the left, Labour's vote share will decline and Farage will make a play to replicate Trump's rise to power. A populist opposition leader is difficult to counter, as France, Holland and Germany are discovering.

The Tories got into power on the back of their Brexit lies. But the reality of Brexit - its consequences - couldn't be hidden. That buried them. Although the BBC hardly mention Brexit. Maybe a D-Notice, maybe self-censorship.

Indicative of the lack of talent and ability in British politics, the Tories deliberately politicised the relatively small number of 'small boats' migrants - even though they were only ever going to fail at stopping them. Local BBC TV stations then targeted the issue, stirring up hate against the migrants with daily reports. Many of them were dumped into seaside hotels, off peak, by the government. It isn't a coincidence that Reform won seats in seaside towns.

Starmer will have a short honeymoon period, as the UK economy, currency, services, healthcare and transport have all been broken by Brexit and cannot be fixed. Tory policy was pretty much scorched earth. And Labour activists will do anything they can to replace him with Kahn, as soon as they can.

Just saw the dignified speech given by former PM Sunak! He accepted defeat gracefully, took responsibility for the defeat upon himself. He had already called Sir Keir Starmer to concede and congratulate him then will travel to King Charles for tendering his resignation for a peaceful transition of power! This is such an elegant and honorable way our leaders should act. Then we have Trump who lost the previous election, called for the public to riot, tried to plot a coup to remain in power. To date Trump acts like a loser kid without any dignity, without any shame with 90% of what he says being lies and vulgar language. The American leaders should learn how to behave and act as American politics has become worse than a third world countries politics all thanks to Trump!

Farage’s party/company ended up with the same number of seats as the Greens.

Farage jumped in because he saw the Tories were on the ropes. Not sure how sustainable that vote is.

If Labour activists replace Starmer with Kahn

Is this a realistic scenario with Starmer having just led Labour to a massive majority?

He’s standing on pretty safe ground at the moment. I’m not sure how radical the new intake is, but I doubt they’ll be too restive early on.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

I've read that Labour got fewer votes overall than in the 2019 election. I'm guessing that's due to a lower turnout which probably suggests a general unhappiness among the population.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Popular Vote

LAB 34% 9.6m

CON 24% 6.8m

RFN 14%.

LDM 12%.

GRN 7%.

SNP 2%.

Others 7%.

Keir Starmer's Labour Party got 609,578 fewer votes than his former boss Jeremy Corbyn at the last general election.

4 ( +4 / -0 )

Farage’s party/company ended up with the same number of seats as the Greens.

And attracted double the number of votes. Also got more votes than the lib dems who got 71 seats. the DUP got 5 seats with a little over 170000 votes compared to the 4 seats for Reform who attracted over 4 million votes - it's close to half of what Labour got.

Labour hardly increased their vote share from 2019 - they didn't win the election the Tories lost it - many voters ditched them for Reform and the Lib dems and to a lesser extend others. For many, it was just anyone but the Tories, many others just stayed at home and didn't bother. Hardly surprising as the Tories have overseen the worst 14 years of government in living memory.

I’d agree with that.

Why do you think the SNP vote collapsed?

3 ( +3 / -0 )

Why do you think the SNP vote collapsed?

Good question, and I'm not really sure. Possibly the recent changed leadership, or possibly from disagreements among various members, or simply from frustration that they can't really do much to change things.

But I'm not sure their vote fully "collapsed". They got about 30% of the vote in Scotland compared to Labour's 36%. However, they ended up with only 9 seats compared to Labour's 37. (One seat is still outstanding.) That First Past The Post system can be ugly.

@albaleo

Cheers.

With you on the FFP system. I‘ll be honest and say I’m glad Labour picked up seats in Scotland to help rout the Tories but a massive majority on less than 40% of the vote?

It is a bit ridiculous.

The 14 years of the UK's conservative clown circus have only managed to leave the island more lost and ruined..

It will be very difficult to get the UK out of its hole if it continues to be the US's lapdog..

80% of Brits eligible to vote did not vote for Labour, yet they now hold a huge majority.

When Labour get 63% of the seats after winning just 34% of the votes people bothered to cast, something is seriously wrong. While I prefer to see Reform just getting 4 seats, I recognise that they deserve 91 and that the Tories are due 156.

Perhaps the Conservatives will back Proportional Representation now.

The data/numbers from Keir Starmer historic win, landslide, point to an electorate dismayed, in many respects, disgusted, horrified with the lack of empathy, the barefaced hypocrisy of a parliamentary political establishment, many of the nauseous politicians that infest it.

I know my UK family to such an extent turned away from the British political system, in the intentio to vote, losing faith that any party will actually implement change.

A cop out maybe, a conscious rejection defiantly.

This pandemic, the loss of life, the lockdowns that brought the UK economy to a standstill, the Boris Johnson government incompetence, contact tracing, the shocking supply implementation of PPE, the fines, the total lack of cohesive management, of oversight when companies disgracefully took advantage of the generosity of the uk tax payers, implementing a furlough, coronavirus Job Retention Scheme.

The costs of “furlough” £70 billion plus. UK

More data for you ……..

UK National debt $3,795,447,839, GDP/Gross domestic product $ 3,474,348, 595, 642, public debt to gdp ratio 109.53%, external debt to gdp ratio 301.49 %

It would be wish for all parties to politically give Starmer new government at least 24 months, a break, a chance to prove he can bring change.

Families are buckling under the weight of home ownership; interest rates are cripplingly high average  4.22% variable, fixed. 6.99%.

Now Kier Starmer pledges promise for change will take a decade minimum, even with across the board rises in taxation, the NHS, recruitment training of new teachers, police on the street, renewal of public services.

Nigel Farage piped piper populism, fuelled by his so called Parliament “bridge head” is a false dawn, a “dads army” politically turbo tiggered, invigorated by Farage gifted public speaking debating.

Farage certainly exceeded all expectations when one considers, without financing or any notable political infrastructure.

As for Scotland, well all in not lost, independence will not fall, begin or end on personalities, or the incompetence of individuals.

Also, Scotland Holyrood has so much more to offer the UK….Its voting system

Be in no doubt Nigel Farage Reform has and will continue to influence UK future political class.

Nationally, Reform won more than 4m votes, over 600,000 more than the Liberal Democrats who returned 71 MPs thanks in part to their sophisticated ground campaign and targeted tactical voting. The Green party won four parliamentary seats on under 2m votes, less than half the tally of Reform.

Inevitably, Farage told a press conference in Westminster on Friday that Reform would be lobbying to abolish first past the post, an electoral system that he said was “not fit for purpose – and we will campaign with anyone and everyone to change this electoral system”.

Drilling into the constituency results reveals the scale of the potential threat Reform could pose in future. The party came second in no fewer than 103 seats, of which 93 were claimed by Labour.

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/article/2024/jul/05/reform-few-seats-conceal-size-threat

In UK Parliament Farage Reform MPs, as they did in the European parliament MEPs will have little or no respect for the establishment, procedures, protocols.

Reform with full financial backing, can build a solid UK wide political infrastructure, with canvassers, activists etc.

The skilled analytical advisors/researcher teams, a point fully discussed debated on LSE 2024 on line election night/morning.

Too many people voted for the pub bore and the pub-bore party. But good to see Truss and Rees Mogg kicked out. Pity that Priti retained her seat. And Hunt.

That Labour has gotten in and in the short term, there won’t be any major cock ups (hopefully) so theUK pound will shine a bit brighter.

Next target stop 208!

“Meet the new boss. Same as the old boss.” I have to say, I am completely underwhelmed by “Labour’s” victory. Keir Hardie would be screaming his head off.

Keir Starmer's Labour Party got 609,578 fewer votes than his former boss Jeremy Corbyn at the last general election.

This makes me sad and angry in equal measure. Things could and should have been so different from 2019 if Corbyn had refused to put Brexit back on the table as part of the manifesto, persuaded in no uncertain way by Two-Face Starmer.
