British PM Johnson breaks tax pledge to fund new care for elderly

British face same problem like Japan now, more and more elderly population.

At the weekend, senior minister Jacob Rees-Mogg recalled George H.W. Bush's declaration in 1988: "Read my lips: no new taxes."

Bush 41 was the first thing that came to mind when I read the headline of this article. Luckily for Boris, Labour is so anti-Semitic there is no way they can take over leadership of Britain. You are fortunate when you have weak and badly led opponents.

Wolfpack.....

Labour is so anti-Semitic

This is nonsense. Some members are against the brutal and racist policies of Israel. That doesn't make them anti semitic. It makes them right.

12 ( +18 / -6 )

It isn’t that big an increase.

Anyways, the Conservatives can pretty much do what they like. No way are Labor going to win an election for many, many years. They are an ineffectual opposition with a nobody leader.

‘Labour’. It’s the name of the party.

There is a worry that with the rise of the SNP, the maths are next to impossible for a Labour majority. A future deal with the Lib Dems would be more likely.

England, most notably the south and shires, has been responsible for saddling the UK with the morally depraved Tories.

Ah, I see you prefer the anti-semitic Labor party instead!

Good grief, Johnson was lying when he said he wouldn't raise taxes? Who could possibly have envisaged that? I mean, he's forged his career in journalism and politics on honesty, probity and a shining integrity. It's scarcely credible,

David Brent can't even spell Labour. Oh dear, what a giveaway.

England, most notably the south and shires, has been responsible for saddling the UK with the morally depraved Tories

The Tories are just the English National Party now and it's looks like we'll be saddled with them until Labour make that deal with the Lib Dems. Thank you, elderly white middle class Home Counties residents.

Labour is so anti-

Anti-democracy/pro-authoritarian and other far right keyboard warriors, paid by their state or perhaps volunteers, from around the world know on social media all they need to do is push one of their memes many times and their intended audience of the intellectually challenged will start to parrot the meme. But reasonable people will dismiss them.

Ah, I see you prefer the anti-semitic Labor party instead!

I think you’ve taken in too much Murdoch media in North America.

There certainly was a problem under Corbyn, but the present leader of the Labour Party has been pretty clear on not tolerating anti-Semitism.

Seeing how you want to play this game, shall we go into Boris Johnson’s past comments regarding race and religion?

I’m willing to do it.

Much like the political situation in Japan, it's just tough potatoes for the Brits. They voted for the conservatives, and after Crobyn got the boot, there is no real opposition. There was so much potential in Corbyn's Labour party for some real change, but now the party is run by an unelectable tory in a red tie. So let the Brits enjoy all the benefits of a conservative government for years to come. Pip pip.

0 ( +3 / -3 )

Inevitable. Both because he is good at breaking his word but also because all the virus spending needs to be made good somehow. Doing so under the auspices of the NHS and elderly care is typical political subterfuge.

@Jimizo

There certainly was a problem under Corbyn

The "problem" was the smear campaign by the Jewish Chronicle, funded by shadowy groups of Tories and their financial backers.

The "problem" was the smear campaign by the Jewish Chronicle, funded by shadowy groups of Tories and their financial backers.

No doubt the media, particularly the notoriously rightwing print media in the UK, blew it up out of proportion, but there was something there.

Corbyn himself was a bit evasive in condemning it - preferring the side alley answer of condemning all racism rather than confronting it head on,

Anyway, does anyone have an opinion on Boris Johnson’s past comments on race and religion? Some seem to see it as a choice between racist Labour and non-racist Conservative.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Why doesn’t he use some of the £350 million a week Brexit saved for the NHS? It must be true, it was on the side of a big red bus.

Both the NI rise and the pension lock suspension are inevitable, will not cause any serious problems and will not impact on Johnson's electoral prospects. His unrealistic ban on the free movement of labour is much more of a problem. It is currently delaying flu vaccines, limiting the use of chemicals that purify drinking water and damaging supply chains that get food to supermarkets. And when a transition period ends at the end of September, things are going to get a lot worse. Those problems may well cost him the election and he will have nobody to blame but himself.

Breaking an election pledge not to raise taxes, British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday announced hefty new funding to fix a social care crisis and a pandemic surge in hospital waiting lists.

Johnson conceded that the 1.25 percent levy on UK national insurance contributions -- paid both by workers and their employers -- violated Conservative manifesto promises ahead of the December 2019 election.

"No Conservative government wants to raise taxes," he told a news conference, after an uproar among many of his backbenchers and reports of a cabinet rift over the plan.

But arguing "COVID wasn't in our manifesto either",

.

If it was not for covid, the manifesto promises could have been kept.

And no government wants to raise taxes as that would hunt them at the next election.

.

Johnson said "nor could we in good conscience meet the cost of this plan simply by borrowing the money and imposing the burden on future generations".

.

We can not keep borrowing the money as that would eat into the government income from taxes and further tighten the spending problems.

Look at the USA and their trillions of borrowings. Sooner or later borrowings have to be paid back, if not now, then by how many generations ?

.

The coronavirus pandemic has fuelled a record backlog of 5.5 million routine procedures on the state-run National Health Service (NHS), rising to 13 million by the end of the year if left unchecked, the government said.

.

i am one of those waiting. What would have been a couple of months at worst (before covid) now has turned in to over a year.

.

While national insurance is paid by all UK workers except the low-paid, the government said a 1.25 percent levy would also be slapped on share dividends, to capture the better-off who rely on investments for income.

.

Pensioners and others who rely on their small income from their investments may not be among the better off. and this extra tax might lower their income below what is considered a living wage.

.

Just increase the tax on high earners as they can afford it.

And no government wants to raise taxes as that would hunt them at the next election.

They can do what they like when there is no real opposition. Just like in Japan.

It's also astounding how many think that the Palestinians should accept being part of an occupied territory.

Oh, and I should add, it's amazing how many of those I just mentioned are Christians who want the Israelis to hold this land because this will be the battle for the end of days. Or some weird Game of Thrones type stuff.

The greatest excuse invented by the elite to not be blamed for anything . . .'COVID made me do it!'

0 ( +2 / -2 )

PM Johnson lies pretty much every time he speaks. The only difference this time is that it will directly cost people money in an easy-to-understand way written on their payslips, so this lie is being taken seriously.

As Zichi says, most care homes in the UK are privately run with varying standards and cost to the taxpayer for subsidized residents. With the exodus of EU workers and resulting staff shortages, I'd expect those standards to be even lower and the cost to the taxpayer higher.

3 ( +4 / -1 )

If there is going to be a opposition to Boris Johnson government, credibility, a clear funded/costed alternative.

Johnson is quite correct, the tax burden is going to be eye watering, what is noticeable, evident is the lack of balance and focus. The need to spread the burden across a range of tax alternatives. Direct taxation carefully directed at income groups.

The NHS needs reform, its burgeoning bureaucracy, the legions of middle management, the waste, the incompetence across every level of senior management of NHS England. There is no public accountability.

To throw more tax payer billions, needs clear performance management at the top.

The issue with staff shortages, this so called exodus of EU workers is a political smoke screen,.

The companies business that have retained there staff pay then properly.

When Covid hit, many of the semi skilled, unskilled worker shipped in from EU member states were simply thrown into the street. Many on short term contracts, pattern/zero hours, false flexibility.

The article says that the rate has risen by 1.25%, but from what, to what?

If the original rate was 1%, for example, then it's more than doubled.

What are the full figures?

1 ( +2 / -1 )

The "problem" was the smear campaign by the Jewish Chronicle, funded by shadowy groups of Tories and their financial backers.

Well I never! The Daily Mail, the BBC et al. have never given any hint or mention of this conspiracy (no, it's the real McCoy, not a theory). Johnson is not depicted as Pinocchio in numerous cartoons for nothing and Hilary Mantel leaving the sinking Brexit-Britannia for Ireland has bluntly told us that Bojo should not be in public life and, letting the cat out of the bag, added that he himself knows it. Until the benighted British public opens its eyes to see through the Tory grandees' new suits the country is heading for a steep decline. But there is light at the end of this long, dark Tory tunnel: as I predicted long ago, the UK will one day have to eat crow and rejoin the EU.

The article says that the rate has risen by 1.25%, but from what, to what?

It's apparently 1.25% up on your present rate. The NI rate is affected by how much you earn. Those earning between £9,564 and £50,268 currently pay 12%, anything above that attracts a rate of 2%.

It looks like initially (2022-2023) the higher rate will go from 2% to 3.25%, and from 2023 to 2024 the higher rate will go back to 2% and the levy will be an extra 1.25% for all.

So as always, the less you earn, the more you pay as a proportion of your income.

3 ( +3 / -0 )

The danger here is the regressive nature of NI contributions.

Inherence tax could have been tweaked.

How Inheritance Tax works: thresholds, rules and allowances

https://www.gov.uk/inheritance-tax

The thresholds could have been reviewed.

The whole strategy has not be fully thought through.

The level of NI by Johnsons government is a tax on jobs.

Not the whole story though, a number of employers are ruthlessly taking advantage.

Corbyn was never electable and he allowed anti-semitism to flourish in the Labour Party. The Red Wall in the deprived areas of England helped the Tories in the last election. You can’t keep blaming the usual suspects this time.

Earth is the third planet from the sun, and there is no country on planet earth that could come close to compete with the UK where irony is considered.

During the 2017 General Election Jeremy Corbyn then labour opposition, proposed to borrow £400 billion over a defined period of time. Corbyn was ridiculed, one government minster stated there could never be a situation where a government would borrow even half that figure in peace time.

Here......

Labour gambles on tax and spend – but will the public back it?

https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2017/may/16/labour-tax-and-spend-public-back-jeremy-corbyn

From April 2020 to April 2021 this Government has borrowed £290bn, and that figure could rise.

This is a unprecedented number, one has to return the 1940 to review such a figure.

Now we are experiencing the consequences.

So, a raise of 1.25%, from 12% to 13.5%? That's an increase of over 10%. Outrageous.

Wait, I just caught up with this (I thought your initial "2%" must have been a typo for "20%"). If you earn more than 50,000 pounds (I assume, if it's anything like the US, that's way above average) you pay LESS in contributions!? What kind of crooked system is that??

Boris the Brexit, he gave his party freedom to do whatever they want, not a single Tory will face any hardship, the rich kids club impose more taxes on the people and there is diddly squat they can do. But basically the UK is selfish and greed rules.

Compare Merkel to Johnson
