Johnson has screwed up the approach to COVID-19, but either way, the schools need to go back. Students have been hardly taught since March.

Reopen the schools.

Is he already back from his camping trip?

The young and healthy should not be putting their lives and education on hold when they are not the ones who get seriously sick. Its those at risk that should be isolating themselves.

If I had a school aged child it would be a hard decision to make. And make no mistake, the decision is up to parents, not any government official. If you believe your child has a high chance of death, then hold them out - easy choice. Just need to make alternate plans to keep them busy during this gap year. Those who believe on balance that their kids are better off in school, the choice should be available to them.

Reopen the schools.

Cause it’s world ( worked? ) so well in the States.

It will.

Agree with P Smith.

We need to use tech more to help students learn from home. No one is saying that students should sit at home and do nothing. But it is time for us to improve online learning as social distancing is important as it can go a long way to fighting this disease just until we have a vaccine or something

UK leader

Oh dear.

4 ( +6 / -2 )

Of course it will, after enough people get sick and/or die from COVID-19.

How many confirmed transmissions of the virus from students to teachers have there been? Still zero?

Agree with P Smith.

Yes, let's have little Jimmy sit at home with his iPad or laptop instead of being with his friends and learning at school so his parents have to stay at home. Oh, forgot, they don't have jobs anyway, the lockdowns took care of that.

What about science labwork or gym class? Have a frog delivered to little Jimmy's home and have him dissect it there? Do jumping jacks on zoom?

Actually Johnson would do well here (see caption).

When in doubt, look backwards.

Is it safe to send kids back to school?

It might depend on the answer to these three questions.

The issue is when the so-called political elite become involved

We know that children are less likely to catch covid-19 than adults. They’re about half as likely, to be precise, according to a recent study by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine (LSHTM) using data from China, Italy, Japan, Singapore, Canada, and South Korea, published in Nature Medicine. A survey of 149,760 people with covid-19 by the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that children 17 and under, who make up 22% of the US population, account for fewer than 2% of confirmed infections across the United States.

The real time risk to reality, is acceptable in relation to a Child need to fully engage in classroom/playground activity

The kids must go back to school. Japan has sent their children back to school as we all know and virtually no problem. Why is the West being so silly about this?

NONE of that is going to matter when they catch the disease.

1 ( +5 / -4 )

Yes, because learning from home is mutually exclusive with also going to school.

What’s it like having a binary worldview? It must be nice not needing to deal with nuance.

not to mention a lack of common sense and empathy

So you're saying that kids should be teaching kids at school?

BJ had the CoVid-19 earlier this year and he survived. But apparently he's still as stupid as ever. You might think after surviving that awful disease he'd know better than to say something as dunderheaded as that.

It's no surprize to me that his Brit detractors refer to him as 'Bozo'. Tthat nickname fits him perfectly.

How come his detractors couldn't beat him in the election? What a bunch of Bozos.

Mendacity rules.

The fact is things are not normal and the children cannot go back to school right now. Distancing? Other safety measures? Whoever said that doesn't know kids.

Britain is an advanced country. They can use Zoom.

Nothing is normal in the UK---from the coronavirus to Johnson and the Torys.

Schools in Scotland have already re-opened (the term starts earlier here). There have been reports of cases in schools since re-opening, but it's not clear whether the transmission was within the schools or in the wider community.

My kids in Setagaya are back in school from September. Masks, wash hands, staggered class hours, and no congregating.

You should watch Netflix documentary “worlds most dangerous prisons”.

Whoever said that doesn't know kids.

We all know kids. And if you are at risk you should be staying away from them. Obviously. Hiding them away is no good for their future or ours.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

So you're saying that kids should be teaching kids at school?

No. I am saying that young to middle age healthy adults should be teaching kids. Covid 19 has been around from months. You just hearing about it? It tends to kill the elderly and those with conditions such as diabetes.

0 ( +1 / -1 )

P Smith: Yes, because we can trust every parent to be rational about this. Just look at this message board for why that’s a bad idea.

You trust the government to make the right decisions for your children? Why not just turn over every child to state run children’s centers after they are born and cut out the parents altogether?

How many confirmed transmissions of the virus from students to teachers have there been? Still zero?

That was not the case with the Paulding School District in Georgia.

It isn't just the kids we have to think about. We are parents of a not quite 6 yo boy. He is our late life surprise so we are older than most parents of kids his age. If he brings Covid-19 home and infects us my wife and I or maybe both of us could very well end up in an ICU. Who takes care of our little boy if we are both incapacitated by Covid-19? We have no family in the region and my nearest relatives are older still, have full plates of their own and don't want to risk being infected. It is not just what happens to the kids but what happens to their parents too. Our little boy's teacher is older still and obese. She might not survive an encounter with Covid-19. Think everyone. Think this whole thing through. For some regions with high rates of infection and deaths, from Covid-19 opening schools is not wise right now.

I completely agree with you. Think about what is best for your family. You are older and are afraid you will die if you are infected. Keep your child home. But not everyone is in the same circumstances you are. If you were 28 years old in good health with a 6 year old child, you aren’t at a very high risk. For some families the risks and negatives are higher if your child remains isolated at home.

One size doesn’t fit all. Follow the science- all of it - not just the sky is falling politicians. In many cases children isolated at home will suffer if not allowed back to school. Families will suffer. Think about it.

reckless

' no congregating.' BION Parents are suing HS boards and colleges so that their kids can play athletics and extracurricular activites, and that includes FOOTBALL. Never mind recess activities for the pre-HS kids.

Part of the problem in America also came when Dirtbag Trump tweeted his followers to 'LIBERATE!' state houses earlier this year. His followers clustered together, exposing themselves and their children and you can guess the rest.

The social distancing guidelines have not been enforced in America and other countries. There's no time to waste.

Wolfpack  Follow the science- all of it - not just the sky is falling politicians.

It all shows that the US, UK and other governments are failures.
