Which has nothing to do with the story.
Radon levels fluctuate all the time. They are affected by weather conditions. It is also easy to tell when it is radon because of radon's short half-life (about 30 minutes) and it's high energy alpha decay.
People can believe whatever they want. But people who believe in science and reality will have no problem believing it was a natural change in the natural level of radon.

Radioactivity just happens to increase at a nuclear power plant but we're suppose to believe that it's "naturally occurring background radon".
