Very much so. To get a legally owned weapon you need to get a licence and go through police checks.

Since Hungerford and Dunblane gun laws in the UK are extremely strict. This is just an example of madness. So sad.

If this had happened in the U.S., it would be considered a "normal" day or couple of days. Which is sick. Fortunately, these incidents are very rare in nations with strict gun control like the UK or Japan.

Devon is very rural, its easier to get a shotgun license in the countryside. Easier but not easy. Either the weapon was his, a family members or he knew someone who had one and stole it.

Davison then shot the young girl as she walked her dog with her family and another innocent bystander.

After randomly firing at terrified passers-by, he then turned the gun on himself following the bloodbath just after 6pm yesterday.

“Rest In Peace” to the victims. “Condolences” to the families of those lost. A ‘speedy recovery; to those survivors of this truly horrific event.

Other papers are reporting he was an Incel, a word you don’t usually see in the UK, even though there have been other shootings globally perpetrated by Incels. They have a huge online presence.

exactly, so for someone in rural Devon saying they want to hunt rabbits is OK. Someone in inner cty Manchester saying they want a shotgun for "home protection" .. not!

The UK does have strict gun control. That's why these incidents happen quite rarely rather than as frequently as they do in the US.

You can't limit anger/psychosis/revenge but you can limit gun ownership.

As a result, most UK assault deaths are stabbings. I'd rather face off against someone with a knife than someone with a gun.

'Not terror related' means that it wasn't an ideologically motivated attack. Incidents like this are usually mental health, gang-related or family issues. The police announce this to reduce the chances of twisted xenophobic idiots committing random acts of hate crime in response.

Anyone with a prison sentence of 6 months (I think) is prohibited from getting a license. All it takes is a an application, some references and a police check of your storage ..plus a "good" reason to have one. My two brothers are both shotgun owners. No limit on the number allowed on each license as long as you have the required storage. The law changed to put pump action and more than 3 cartridge weapons in a different license category ....more difficult to get. But if you are from a well known local family in a farming community, not impossible.

I am very surprised to find that as of March 31st 2021 there were 566,000 people in the UK holding a firearm or shotgun certificate. 97% of shotgun applications were granted last year. 365 firearms and shotguns were lost or stolen.

Whilst it’s superficially comforting to ascribe this or that label to something which we don’t truly understand, the risk is that we delude ourselves into thinking that the problem is smaller and easier to manage than it actually is or confined to so few that we need not overly worry. Police in southwest England said six people were killed, including the suspected shooter, in the city of Plymouth Thursday in a “serious firearms incident” that wasn't terror-related.

Honestly, what difference does it make if it was terror related or not? I know the first thought that goes through many people's minds is "was it some crazy muslim immigrant"? but why is it so important to point this out right away?

Not really. Barrel end in mouth pull trigger with your toe. True a handgun is easier, but it's not that hard.

He murdered his mother, then went outside and murdered a three year old girl and her father who were walking their dog. He went into a park and murdered a man and a woman before killing himself. He did it because he was angry at life, he was a loser who blamed women for his shortcomings and who online expressed violent misogyny, especially towards mothers and especially his own. He had a licence for the gun.

He was an Incel, although men online are falling over themselves to deny it.

A White local nut-case... not Foreigner, Not Religious, but plain and simple a Nut-case. The UK has 'em too.

So killing random innocent people is not terror-related. Had it been a moslem, it would definitely be classified as such. Terror has no religion nor ethnicity.

Since he also randomly shot at strangers, it is terrorism!

My thoughts are with the innocent victims and their families.
